To be fair, Romo played the game of his life.  Anybody even biatches about that pick needs to have their balls cut off; that was a helluva play by the linebacker.

I'm loving seeing the Saints bounce back this year.  It's even better that it only took five games to get a four game lead in the division.

I'm just wondering how many armored trucks filled with gold bars it's going to take to resign Graham.  On Sunday, Brees to Graham was 10-for-10 for 135 yards.  What is even more impressive is that it's not just short routes, he is burning defenses deep.  If he has a linebacker on him he just runs right past them.  If he has a corner or safety on him, he just posts up and overpowers them on jump balls.

He's not just the #1 TE.  He's leading all receivers in catches and yards.

Yep. Heard one of our sports radio talking heads this morning say that the Cowboys' defense should all be begging Romo's forgiveness this week. It's absolutely silly how much they failed their team this week. The Broncos punted zero times during that game. ZERO

And is it just me, or have you been MIA lately?

On a note related to football itself, this Cards defense is being pissed away by the worst offensive squad the NFL can muster for the second time in two years. Fitz is playing at a pedestrian level and the only time good things happen is when Andre Ellington gets the ball. At least not-Levi Brown didn't held his own this game.

Hm, nyess, if you listen closely enough, you can almost hear the whistle of the Giants falling rapidly through the atmosphere. Oh how the mighty have fallen. And check out those Chieftains, eh? They're gonna get altitude sickness from ascending so quickly. Good jorb, you lovable rascals.

Stupid metastats no one cares about except for me and exactly one other person:

Change from Week 1 to this week:
One 20 point drop:Falcons
One16 point jump: Chiefs

One team is right back where they started: Patriots

Change from last week to this week:
Two 6 point drops:Falcons & Dolphins
One 6 point jump: Eagles. Really?

Five teams did not change rank

Number of times rankings have changed:
1 team has changed once: Jaguars
13 teams have changed 5 times (max). Down from 16 teams last week who had moved the maximum number of times

Difference between high rank & low rank:
Lowest fluctuation:Jaguars, Broncos, & Patriots with 3
Highest fluctuation:Falcons with 20
Average fluctuation is 10.03

Most spots traveled:
Eagles with 28

Teams hitting their highest rank this week:Colts, Saints, Chiefs, Browns, & Raiders
Teams hitting their lowest rank this week:Seahawks, Falcons, Texans, Giants, & Vikings

Three teams have held the #1 spot: Seahawks, 49ers, & Broncos

The Cardinals sent heavy pressure after Cam Newton on Sunday. In the last three quarters, Newton was 5-of-14 with three interceptions and six sacks against added pressure.

Daryl Washington's return after a 4 gamer was HUGE.  problem is, he's facing a Octoberish (?) hearing on an off-season Domestic Violence / Assault allegation that some believe still exposes him to NFL discipline.

Palmer looked pretty bad and during the game, I wrote, "gota wonder if Arians pulls him" which did not happen.  but with 11 games left and the team a rather surprising 3-2, if Palmer keeps slapdicking around such that it puts games in jeopardy and a deep 2014 NFL draft class, I woner if Palmer sticks around.  the 'chise will have to make a decision by week 8:  are we playing for a WC berth or should we consider the draft?

I mean, yeah, we're going into Week 6, but the Cards at 3-2 are one of a host of 3-2 teams that on paper have a wild card at minimum hope, noting is is rather LUDICROUS to discuss anything playoff related this early.  My point is, if Palmer keeps playing Palmerball but with a pretty awesome defense, who is the joke really on, here?

Palmer does not have a quick release. The Oline cannot protect him long enough for him to be effective. Unless they go to a shorter passing game, or heavily rely on the running game to set him up, he won't last past week 10.

1)  Get well soon, Megatron!  For the love of all that is holy, get well soon!

2)  With the Flyers firing their head coach, Chip Kelly is now the longest tenured head coach amongst Philadelphia's four major professional sports teams

The Chiefs haven't exactly had a tough schedule.  Going by power rankings:

@32
vs15
@21
vs31
@14 (with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB)

And going forward, they have...

vs24
vs17
vs16
@23
bye
@1
vs20
vs1
@27
@24
vs4
@20.

Of their remaining eleven games, three are against teams in the top half of the power rankings.

Sounds like they go 12-4 or 11-5 and get beat up in the playoffs.

They seriously have one of the worst O-lines in the league. So bad, in fact, that having Rice, Pierce and Leach in the backfield is STILL only good for less than 3 YPC. Only the jags are worse.

At least fat ass McKinnie is benched. Still no help for a hopeless center and poor left guard.

They have 1 WR worth anything, their TE is beat to hell, their RB is old, they are using questionable play calling and their QB is sophomore slumping.  Furthermore beating up on the Texans and Rams doesn't count for much of anything, those aren't good teams

What's scary is that 4-4 is possible. They'll lose this week at SF (I'd take the Niners in the knockout pool if not for the Jags-Denver game) and they'll likely lose vs Seattle next Thursday, but because it's a Thursday game at home; it's not a guaranteed loss. Then they host Atlanta, who stinks and have lost one of their top WRs.

Roethlisberger would be a good fit in Arizona. He is his own offensive lineman.

To be fair, Romo played the game of his life.  Anybody even biatches about that pick needs to have their balls cut off; that was a helluva play by the linebacker.

I don't particularly care for Romo but when a QB is putting up those ridiculous stats and still loses the game, it is all on their defense.

For Romo to win that game he would have had to set the NFL record for passing yards in a game

Dallas lost to the NFL's best offense, Denver?  Sad, but not a problem.

It's still the defense that stopped Manning's 20TD streak, at least there's that.

This is all true. And I think Romo is a very good NFL quarterback. But what separates him from elite status is that he seems not to rise to the occasions in situations like this. Yes, he had a monster game, but at the pivotal moment, with two minutes left in a tie game against a superior opponent on national TV, playing at home, with a chance to engineer one last game winning drive, he throws a pick deep in his own territory. If you want to focus on the game' statistics, they are rightly admirable. But in the end, this is not fantasy football, and his interception was perhaps the critical difference in the outcome of the game.

FARKISTAN EXTREME ELIMINATOR CHALLENGE

After starting with 54 players, we were down to  15 coming in to week 5. After all those games shook out, we are now down to  9 players remaining. Of the  4 eliminated this week:

All of them picked the  Falcons to beat the Jets, so say goodbye to:

IAmRightSucksMyBalls - Well, back to your odd fetish with notorious Seahawks fans
DamnYankess - Like their namesake, also done by October
mischlep - I have nothing to say

That makes the official Farkistan Eliminator NFL player of the week  Geno Smith of the New York Jets

Of the nifty  9 remaining players:
6 picked the  Rams over the Jaguars:

balfourk
ToughStuff2
wjllope's WAGs
Glockenspiel Hero
Pie is double yummy

1 picked the  Packers over the Lions:

1 picked the  Chiefs over the Titans
Senorbenedict

And  1 incredibly witty, debonair and general God-like being picked the  49ers over the Texans:

Truth. 20+ teams would be improved by having Romo. But with 2 min left down by 4, I'll take Alex Smith instead. Tony Romo for 53 min + Alex Smith for the last 7 would be a great farking quarterback.

I have a very good friend who's a Broncos fan and was texting me all game bitaching about the porous defense. Missed tackles, poor pass coverage, the whole lot.

Yes, some of that was Romo having the best game he'll ever have (ignoring the pick, of course). But the Broncos' D needs a LOT of help because they were just terrible. Their only saving graces from Sunday are the 2 forced turnovers, forcing the only punt of the game and that they won.

Well, maybe it's not fair, but Romo has done that enough to have that reputation. Payton Manning was largely considered a guy who couldn't win when it counted most as a college QB because he could never get past Spurrier's Florida while carving his name all over the record books. Until he comes up big in a big game and by that I mean deep in the playoffs or in a game like this and not against a bad Redskins team, it will stick with him.

I think that's more of a testament to how good the Broncos are, rather than how "terrible" Romo is. Get real, you didn't have the Cowboys coming anywhere close to winning that game before it started. So don't act all smug now.

Woah. You need to back off your fangirl-angst there for a second. I was defending Romo.

Good thing the Saints are the very last team the Falcons would ever trade a deadly weapon to.  It would be like if the Cowboys decided to tank and traded, I don't know, DeMarcus Ware to the Redskins.  In a year that the Redskins were good.  Not happening.

Nabb1: But in the end, this is not fantasy football, and his interception was perhaps the critical difference in the outcome of the game.

No.  The critical difference in the game was a defense that forced zero punts and allowed 51 points.  Romo's goof gave the Broncos 3 points.  Three.  That's it.  If you have a game where interceptions lead to three points against you, and your TD/INT ratio is 5/1 for over 500 yards and 48 points, that quarterback is golden for the day.

Romo has flaws.  Bad ones, and I'm not often a defender of him.  But he was golden on Sunday.  If your offense puts up 48 points in the NFL, you're not to be blamed.  EVER.  100% of the problem Sunday was the defense.

And people, please, give up on the "clutch" argument.  It's BS.  It's always been BS.  It's statistically and objectively crap, and is just used as narrative fodder for the bobblehead blowhards at ESPN.  Don't feed the trolls.

I wish there was a stat for 'last minute victory drives'. Something that counted if your team was down in the last 5 minutes or so and you lead them to a win.

I found a 'game winning drive' stat on pro-football reference, but it's pretty useless. Romo has one for a game they won 35-14 over the Jags in his first year, when the. Jags didn't score after a 14-0 lead in the first, with the game 13-14 at the start of the fourth. 20-14 within a minute. It wasn't a close game by anywhere near the end.

I think if we found an actually useful list it would be interesting.

It's not a "clutch" argument. It's about making certain decisions in certain situations. It's why great closers are so hard to come by in baseball. The last three outs are the hardest to get. Pitching in the ninth with a small lead is different than pitching in the rest of the game.

My argument has always been that people put entirely too much emphasis on the QB. QB's don't win games. Teams do. Players should be analyzed by their contributions to individual plays. W/L should only come into play when looking at teams as a whole. Not players.

I also think PFM is the best quarterback who has ever played despite the fact that he has only won a single super bowl and has also had a reputation for choking in the big game.

Romo (coming from a Cowboys fan) is simply an average quarterback. Even when watching the game when the Cowboys got the ball back at the end of the 4th quarter I said to myself, "watch Romo blow this one with an obligatory interception." Next play, yup, a game losing interception. He does it all the damn time and has earned the reputation for blowing games in the final few minutes, because, well he blows games in the final few minutes.

The guy just cracks under pressure all the damn time when a game is on the line.

Oh well, at least the Cowboys are tied for first in the division.

In that Superbowl run, I and my then 6 year old daughter sat next to a Chiefs fan.  He had more alcohol in his system than 21st Century Liquors has in its store.  He was hilarious.  We stood up for him to keep the cops from removing him.  He and my daughter hit it off.  I almost felt sorry for him driving all that way, lugging 4 cowboy hats he'd made from Budweiser cartons, and drinking that much to watch his team hit a brick wall.

Unfortunately Romo picked a really bad time to throw a pick. If he had a shiatty game from the start, nobody would care that much but he did it at the end when another score likely wins the game.

A pick six on the first drive? Oh well. A pick when already down? Meh, losing anyway.

A pick at the end of the game when in a position to knock off the consensus best team in the league by playing what is possibly the best game of your life? That gets attention.

Friends,

We are gathered here today to celebrate a remarkable achievement.   An achievement remarkable, perhaps, in how it slipped away from all of our eyesight.  This was a victory gained in the shadows, an accomplishment entirely notable now that wasn't noted at all while it was taking place.

Maybe the greatest win notched this week was in how we all played a part in finally answering the question, "If a quarterback sucks when no one is there to see it, did the suck really take place?"

The answer?

i63.photobucket.com

Oh, it definitely farking does.

Week 5 in the NFL typically answers quite a few questions, and this year's version was no different.  Just over a month into the year, it can be seen which teams are for real, which are posers, which are the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2013?

Matt Schaub's forgotten the object of football.  The Packers and Niners look to be lying in wait for a big push late in the season.  The greatest and bestest team in the history of football's sprung a leak on defense and as for the beneficiary of said leak, well...

www.dhbrownsports.com

Antonio is always lurking.

Always.

So what of this week's victor, what of this week's champion who saw a slate of leaders who could easily be taken, quickly be overcome, and thought, "That biatch is MINE?"  Well, he certainly knows a little bit about being dubbed far better than reality would show, doesn't he?

25.media.tumblr.com

Oh sure, he has plenty of experience with sportswriters overcome with nonsensical ramblings about yardage numbers without thought of when they were recorded or what the score was at the time, being drenched with drool at the thought of a revolutionary new take on the position.  And yes, certain voices - incredibly intelligent and wildly brave voices, natch - spoke up against the foolishness they heard and foretold the future that would soon arrive, replete with turnovers aplenty and losses by the bucketful caused by that same awful decision making process mentioned by those lionhearted outsiders.

Those factors all came into play this week, all while the nation's eyes were watching the megascreens at JerryWorld and struggling not to have seizures immediately thereafter.  The carrot cake option contained two teams battling to remain relevant in the playoff chase this season, a victory or loss for each side already so important in this still young football season.  The winner's dreams of the tournament would stay viable, the loser sinking further into the sub-.500 abyss, and to that objective two gunslingers not unfamiliar to the pages of this ceremony would step.

Step immediately to it one did, but not the one being feted today.  Instead, it seemed as though Carson Palmer, forever the bridesmaid, might finally be able to step into the sunlight and grab what has seemed to be his on countless occasions previous.  A quick interception recorded a little over two minutes into the contest gave a sudden 16.7 score to the Arizona starter, and our man knew he'd have to work quick to overcome his opponent.

Instead, the job became a slog.  The farkups dueling in the darkness of a near total media blackout went to halftime tied at 16.7 a piece, only one pick per person.  The break came and went, possessions were traded, and still the deadlock continued.  The bullshiat in Washington thought they had some sort of a "shutdown," hah - this is serious business, and it seemed as though we happy few were cruising for some sort of nightmare 50.0 tiebreaker.

At once, the clouds seemed to part and a golden opportunity was at hand.  This week's hero was backed up against his own end zone, and it was blatantly obvious what to do.  One short play later, we could dance if we wanted to, we could leave our friends behind.  Because if they don't dance and if they don't dance, well, they're no friends of mine.

"Yes," this gunslinger thought as he landed with a thud in his own endzone, "finally it's all going my way!  This is only the beginning, let this flameout match THAT!"

Three minutes later, Palmer answered with a smirk and a "scoreboard," another pass to a Panther resulting in a 33.3 lighting up the numbers.  The fourth quarter began, and it seemed as if all might truly be lost.

One play into that final frame, though?  As quick as lightning, an interception tied it back up.  Some punts later?  Sack fumble.  An Arizona touchdown later?  Pick and a motherfarking victory formation for the Cardinals.  While the Cards offense might make Larry Fitzgerald think his pistol looks awfully sexy week after week, a solid defense flying under the radar made our champion's throws fly directly to them.

3 turnovers in 13 minutes, add it together with the first half pick, and what do you have?

i63.photobucket.com

You're  - well, take it away, Walt.

timujin: Btw, Di Atribe, you need to update your profile page.  Something to do with the number 506 :D

*gasp!* YOU'RE RIGHT! Thank you for the reminder!  :D

dickfreckle: /that's what happens when you're called someone else names you"America's Team."

Fixed. I see the outrage over the moniker more than I see fans using it. *shrug* Just ignore it like I do. And if anyone else wants it, more power to you. Enjoy the hatred & derision that comes with it.

dickfreckle: //like many Farkers, I don't like Dallas but I do like you!

I LIKE YOU TOO! Awwww it's been like Valentine's Day around here the past few days. I like all you farkers, too.

Well. OK, most of you. MOST

robsul82: Maybe the greatest win notched this week was in how we all played a part in finally answering the question, "If a quarterback sucks when no one is there to see it, did the suck really take place?"

The answer?

Oh, it definitely farking does.

When a tree falls in the woods, you bet your damn ass it makes a sound.

Di Atribe: dywed88: Unfortunately Romo picked a really bad time to throw a pick.

OK what I'm gonna need you to do here, is stop acting like I don't know that. I am aware that the timing of his mistake was very bad. However, I think a lot of people are overlooking a multitude of things that went on in that game. I know it's going to get attention. But I expect a LOT more honesty out of fark sports-tab fans.

The average chucklehead on facebook? Sure, I expect stupid memes & "herp derp Romo does it again." But from this crowd? No way. We are cool. We even have matching tattoos & leather jackets. And we know some football, dammit.

Last weeks greenlight was somewhat prescient....

mikaloyd: pfhobia: It is still ridiculous that they put up 48 points and still had to run the 2-minute drill. Absolutely unbelievable.

Donkey fans should be thinking the same thing and looking at something, ANYTHING to improve their D before playoffs start. If KC can hold Enver to 30 points they have a shot at beating them.

you dont think getting the best pass rusher back and an old bit still top flight corner back isnt going to help.  Its a huge upgrade at 2 of 11 positions.

Most spots traveled: Eagles with 28

Teams hitting their highest rank this week:Colts, Saints, Chiefs, Browns, & Raiders
Teams hitting their lowest rank this week:Seahawks, Falcons, Texans, Giants, & Vikings

Three teams have held the #1 spot: Seahawks, 49ers, & Broncos

robsul82: We are gathered here today to celebrate a remarkable achievement.   An achievement remarkable, perhaps, in how it slipped away from all of our eyesight.  This was a victory gained in the shadows, an accomplishment entirely notable now that wasn't noted at all while it was taking place.

They say a man's character is defined by what he does when no one's watching.  Now we know these two teams' character.  Congrats, Cam, and thanks for bringing the funny, rob.

Curious to see how he does without Doom. It's helped Suggs to have a bookend finally. 7 sacks in 5 games.

Rwa2play: To be fair, Romo played the game of his life.  Anybody even biatches about that pick needs to have their balls cut off; that was a helluva play by the linebacker.

You are the ONLY person (besides me) that have mentioned that play.
According to EsPN the WR was standing still in the middle of 1985 Bears.

FTFA
(Chiefs)Back-to-back tests are coming, hosting Oakland and Houston.

Shiat like this is why no one respects EsPN. Is the test "Can you win by a total of 40?" Otherwise that is perhaps the dumbest thing I've read on Power Rankings. The Chiefs are not only ranked highly on your poll, but they're also ACTUALLY good.
Real football people think so! Neat!

Seattle, looking to wash off the stink of the Colts loss, hosting a Tennessee team sans Locker?  Next best thing.

Man I love Doom and was sad to see him go.  But Phillips has played well and Ayers has been playing better making him at least average.  I think the biggest thing will be Von Chickenlover avoiding the hammy injury that seems to bite everyone that misses time due to holdout or suspension.

Since ESPN can't do this, let me.

The Oakland Raiders defense forced the Denver Broncos to punt. Multiple times.
The Dallas Cowboys defense did not force a single punt.

OAKLAND.

Why does Romo "ALWAYS" make the big mistake at the end of the game? Because he's ALWAYS in that position.
The Dallas defense damn near lost to the Giants who had given up 5 turnovers. It took a team-wide Delhomme to ice that one.

Romo is a great QB with a shiat defense. Every damn year.
And I don't like the Cowboys.

I'm already sick of the Jets.
I never got a chance to be un-sick of them.

The only reason the were 'ranked' 32 was that it is better to be 32 than 25. Everyone talks about dead last. Who is talking about Carolina or Tampa Bay?

The Jets weren't that bad, and they still aren't that good. The Tampa Bay game was a hose job by the refs, and Atlanta can't play defense.

Reality: They're halfway to the season's win total.

2013-10-08 10:18:24 PM

SilentStrider: Eagles having the biggest jump surprises me. Yes they won, but it was against the Giants.

The part that freaks me out even more is the whole "tied for first place, with a credible shot at the playoffs because the whole division stinks" thing.

Rwa2play: Di Atribe: Hm, nyess, if you listen closely enough, you can almost hear the whistle of the Giants falling rapidly through the atmosphere. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Untimely injuries + No running game = Shiat happens.  Coughlin shouldn't quit/get fired, the staff does need a shake-up, and Reese needs to start scouting for O/D Linemen today.

To be fair, the Saints can't really run* for sh*t and have also had very untimely injuries... that were solved by depth. I see where you're coming from but the reasons you listed aren't all that's going on up there.

*By this I mean a traditional run, not all those screens for YAC that have burning the league's ass so far.

/I don't feel that it's Coughlin. Remember in 2007 when the entire press and some players were calling for his head over the summer and first few games? Anyone remember what happened that year?

2013-10-08 10:37:03 PM

FuManchu7: In my totally unbiased opinion, Atlanta should send Gonzales over to the Saints for his chance at a Superbowl.  A 2 TE formation with Graham and Gonzales would be near unstoppable.

I still remind my younger friends that this Golden Graham mania was a thing long before Jimmy. That, and Gonzalez is approaching 40 and STILL one of the tops in the league when given the proper environment. I have hated the Falcons since before I copped my first side-boob, but there is nothing wrong with admiring an outstanding player whose only flaw is wearing a uniform that requires sedatives on my end.

The situation you describe almost makes me giggle. Not going to happen, but still.

bionicjoe: Romo is a great QB

I don't think it's a shiat defense. I mean, it is right NOW, but not always. He's a great QB with a middling defense. And that keeps him in a lot of games. But because he's never played with a *good* defense, he has to try and win at the end. And yeah... sometimes he doesn't. But the kid can ball.

/Also hate the Cowboys.

Exactly. Romo can't win it by himself. The offense can't win it by themselves. DeMarcus Ware can't be everywhere on the field. It's downright silly.

And you forgot San Diego, where our defense couldn't get off the field to save their lives, much less the game.

Aaaaand you're wrong.
Phillip Rivers threw 3 INTs against Oakland. He sliced up the Cowboys to the point that he almost beat Drew Brees in fantasy.

NY Giants versus Cowboys: 31 points
NY Giants versus rest of teams: 12.75 points (average, including 23 at Denver)

Rank of Average starting position for Cowboy's offense over the past 5 years: 29th

The Cowboys have been running "Demarcus Ware + 10 Other Guys" Defense for years. It has been Super-Ineffective.

Not making excuses, but by the 2nd half we did have 5 out of 11 defensive starters on the sidelines. It is hard to be an effective defense with half your starters out.  Still, though, 48 points...damn...

That said, when Miller comes back we had better be able to pressure the QB, or this will be another very quick Manning exit from the playoffs.
