(Fox News)   On the first day of the shutdown, the Federal government gave PBS $445 million. So, let's see...doing some quick math here...7 days of shutdown, carry the 3...by my estimates, we've now funded PBS over $3 trillion and there's still 51 WEEKS LEFT   (foxnews.com) divider line 105

You can taste the hate they have for public broadcasting.

Nothing pisses them off more than an organization dedicated to educating the public. It runs completely counter to all of their corporate goals.

Fox News lost any remaining credibility it had when it declared as an editorial move to refer to the shutdown as a "slimdown" in all of its allegedly hard news articles. The incredibly audacity of that is just mindboggling, and I'm pissed that the media hasn't given them more sh*t over it.

A couple of years ago Fox News set up a formal relationships with WorldNetDaily and Newsmax. You know, the publications responsible for those "One Weird Trick Obama DOESN'T Want You To Know, Yours For $29.99" articles and claiming to constantly have breaking news about Obama's latest conspiracies.

The number one most popular cable news channel partners with them. Ponder that for a second.

The thing about Fox News is when we call it "propaganda" we're not making a fanciful and outlandish criticism.  It is a factual statement.  It is propaganda as heavy handed and as shameless as anything that came out of the USSR.  The major difference is that it is (as yet) primarily limited to its own programming and is not ever present in all facets of everyday life.

It is primarily a voluntary propaganda.

This fact is probably the most telling part about their audience.

I love it. Fox makes money through advertising to people who eat this garbage up, hook, line, and sinker. Corporations are watching in horror as the people they helped propel into office actively work at tanking the economy, while they give money to the cheerleaders at Fox egging it on. Oh, I hate that this is happening myself, but lawdy, this part is great. Hey, Fox... If the economy does tank, guess what? You'll probably need to slim down as well. It's okay, you have those bootstraps.

Unfortunately, no one's curious.  I saw a FB friend post a listing of talking points that were quickly debunked by various other friends.  When confronted on it (he's a social studies teacher so I asked him to do the minimum amount of research that he expects from his students before posting) he replied that it was a 'talking points post' not a 'serious discussion'.  I've known him since college and love him to death and for the first time I REALLY wanted to punch him.

Not at all biased:

"CPB is a nonprofit corporation that is technically separate from the government. So is NeighborWorks, a nonprofit that receives congressional appropriations, just as CPB does. NeighborWorks helped cause the housing bubble; CPB provides the propaganda that anesthetizes the public, preventing people from laying blame for failed policies at the door of the government," said Matthew Vadum, senior editor at the Capital Research Center. "Keeping a distance by incorporating these entities affords the government plausible deniability when the two nonprofits mess up."

They only use "slimdown", because they realize even their viewers aren't stupid enough to blame the shutdown on Obama/Democrats.  If that were the case, they would say "shutdown" loud and proud, while blaming it on the Democrats.  Since they know they can't pull it off, they minimize it by calling it a "slimdown".  It's also an attempt to make it sound like the Republicans are doing something marginally good.

Really mind boggling, but I guess unsurprising that this is coming from bullshiat mountain.  The tea party demands a government shutdown, then foxnews complains that in dealing with the shutdown that forced on him against his will, Obama isn't trying to only shut down unpopular things.

I wish I could say that it's a new level of bullshiat.  But when a "news" channel is basically the a propaganda mouthpiece for a political party that has gone nuts and thrown reality out the window, the bullshiat knows no bounds.

Actually, the only part that matters is that this was funded last year, so it has no bearing on the shutdown anyway. In other words, it's a non-story, but the ignorant mouth-breathers can't be bothered to read that far.

No, teabaggers are perfectly capable of holding both thoughts simultaneously.  Just like they think Obama is a Communist and a Fascist and a Muslim that went to a radical Christian church for 20 years.

Yeah, I was mentioning this to my wife this weekend, I can't read a Tweet to save my life. The real problem is figuring out which part is what the person making the post actually meant to say. It seems like that's crammed in the middle somewhere, but has no real rhyme or reason to sort it out.

On a related note, I got this onto FaceBook before my Right Wing buddies could get all lathered up and pointed out that the reason this happened wasn't because Obama was protecting his "liberal propaganda machine", but because it was already funded from last year. It'll be interesting to see if this tactic works, or if my buddies will ignore it and steamroll right over me.

Of all the things about the modern conservative bowel movement, the one that makes me chuckle the most is their raging hate-boner for PBS.

"Ooh, curse those evil liberals and their cooking and home-improvement shows! They only rebroadcast things from BBC because it's a conspiracy to put America back under British rule!"

Empty Matchbook: He should've pledged Pearl.

I knew I had you favorited for a good reason.

It looks like a clustetf*ck doesn't it?

Yea, but I did learn that you're a chick.

How YOU doin'?

Lol why does Bontesla come across as masculine? I've heard that it does...

my best friend raises his kid on Sesame Street and other PBS broadcasts, plays with his son and feeds him well.   The 2y/o tests at a 4 y/o coordination level and is already sounding out letters on his blocks.

My little cousins child watches shiat like Dora, has a mother that is unconcerned with her, is 4 and still not fully toilet trained and grunts like an animal most of the time.

One is very rich the other very poor.... guess which one's child is the prodigy.

I really can't wait unitl the episode of Dora that starts out "First we cross the desert, then jump over the fence, and finally we're in America!"

Mikey1969: 2 grams: Why are we still funding PBS?

Because we need something non-corporate to combat the 4,000 hours of advertising bullshiat we see each year per channel?

There is also the stuff we would never see if we relied on commercial television to cover it.

JusticeandIndependence: MindStalker: In case anyone is curious, the this payment to PBS and many organization was passed into law years ago. What is "shutdown" is everything that there isn't a law funding them for.

Yes, most sane people know this.

I did not know this. My coworkers say I'm insane.

2 grams: Why are we still funding PBS?

There are lots of places in this country where it is not cost effective for for-profit broadcasters to provide access to news and information (that's not a criticism of for-profit broadcasters; it's simply economic reality). Now, there may be those who say that cable and internet have rendered the matter moot, and that's a discussiont we could have if we wanted. I think the number of Americans who lack cable or internet access may surprise you, though.

I would never have discovered Monty Python or Dr Who, at least not until my 20s,if it wasn't for catching them both on PBS when I was 11 or 12. I'd rather have my tax dollars go to PBS than to have reality TV even exist, and I don't actually watch anything on PBS any more...

Politics aside...is this what passes for journalism, and journalistic writing these days?  Do they have a high school drop out writing their articles, or is that the level of education expected of the readers of Fox "News"?

There's nothing wrong with Dora... My Brother in Law doesn't like Dora though, because he somehow thinks that they are "indoctrinating" his kid because they are teaching him words in Spanish while teaching problem solving. The guy is a year older than me, you think he'd remember the fact that kid's learning shows have been doing that since the 70s,even the one he watched. There was one called 'Villa Allegre' that aired in the 70s that was really just a show about integrating American and Mexican cultures, and my BIL turned out fine... Sad part is; he's a smart guy and USUALLY pretty level headed...

At the same time, I think Sesame Street socks. This flashy MTv editing is doing noting but ruining kids' attention spans even earlier...

Why not? Should it be defunded just because in the last few years an army of degenerate white trash has appeared that mindlessly attacks everything it doesn't understand?

"It's more than irresponsible, it is reprehensible. It's an 'in-your-face' move by the administration, blatantly picking winners and losers in this shutdown"

As opposed to the GOP which forced a shutdown over their efforts to pick winners and losers by funding what they like and leaving out what they don't? Man, these guys have some gall.

Because I have literally nothing to add that hasn't been already said, I'll jump in on this particular off-topic train of thought.  (Mainly because my efforts in combating the GOP water-carriers tends to happen on FB rather than anywhere interesting.)

Personally, I saw your login name and envisioned a weird gestalt of Bon Jovi and Nikola Tesla.

/that may just be me, though.
