So He was on first?

I took one look at that picture, and the caption, and decided it was bullshiat.

Map of the World? It is claimed that this is an eighth century copy of the map Admiral Zheng He made in 1418. The map clearly shows the new world (right half) - more than 70 years before Columbus discovered it

Even if I'm kind and assume "eighth" was meant to be "eighteenth", and ignore my inner pedant, it still is bullshiat. No way could they have mapped the entire continents in 1418 and then everyone forgets. I could almost believe reached the coast of California then sailed back, but not mapping out the entire farking new world continents. That's completely implausible.

Here this thing from a guy who is very close to have a B.A. in history. No one claims Columbus discovered America any more. Apart from the fact that you know all the Indians running around, the fact that the Vikings not only discovered North America, but even had a settlement for a short time is acknowledge fact. Current high school and college history books talk about.

There is some evidence that maybe the Chinese also found North America but it is fleeting at best.

Old news is so exciting!!

Seriously, this theory has been around for years.

And, as said upthread, even if the Chinese got there in 14whatever, the Vikings had already been there.

The map was copied in the Eighth Century from a 1418 original? Was Obama and his Fabled Time Machine involved?

One interesting thing that this Eighth Century map clearly shows is that California is an island. This is a mistake made by Spanish map makers in the 1700s.

So the map is from the 800s, proves that the Chinese discovered America in the 1400s, and contains mistakes from the 1700s.

That's some mighty fine map-making, Lu.

Shows Australia and Antarctica, too. Funny how they put England and Ireland off the coast of Spain where Atlantis is supposed to be.

Ok, so Columbus was the first one to discover America and bring the news permanently back to the rest of the world. That's a lot more important the Leif Erikson.

This guy was long ago proven to be a hack. His last three books were all proven to be frauds with no historical evidence. There is not a single respected historian who sides with him, no academic presses or journals will touch his articles. He publishes in trade press because they have no standards. This guy is a hack. and to call him a "historian" he doesn't even have a BA in history. Zheng He meticulously recorded his voyages to africa and india and never does any journey's eastward ever come up, and this is not the first time he has claimed something about He and it was found to be fake. Even the offical history bureau of the chinese government called his previous books "false" and "lacking proof" though it has become popular with the masses, kinda like Harry Potter. Yes even the chinese call his bull. Gavin Menzies has made many claims in the past and should be ignored.

This. Finding something doesn't count if you don't do anything with it. If Fleming had discovered penicillin and decided it was no big deal, he wouldn't be famous either.

Fixed that for you. Its just that good old European arrogance. Now, if you go to the jungle in Africa and there is a group of people who didn't know that the New World existed, they would be called ignorant savages. but, when white people don't know that shiat existed, it means that it just hasn't been discovered. Get the fark out of here.

Do anything with it? Weren't Native Americans living and sustaining themselves off of the land? Does "do something with it" mean you have to knock down the trees and call your tribes "settlements"? Fark are you talking about?

Both sides are bad, so my opinion is more valid because I call everyone on their bullshiat...or that's the perception I'm trying to give off anyway. That's why I had to make sure to include a liberal.
