It's just the last guy they have problems with...their brother can get him for them.

Yes, because the aliens will only attack our nukes and not the HUGE inventory of aircraft stationed at airbases around the country, which we would use to counter-attack.  Also, what huge fleet of spacecraft do we have that are combat capable?

They'll be OK once they acquire a two-liter bottle of Shasta and an all-Rush mix-tape.

Anyone able to truly conquer space wouldn't need weapons to destroy the earth, just drop a big rock on us.  Nothing we could do about it.

This low probability threat assessment stuff is diverting precious resources from where they are needed most: planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Not to worry though. When the world is in danger of rocks being shot at earth by aliens. The Japanese will design a space warship from an old WWII battleship coincidentally named Yamato.  Then they'll fly off to find a telekinetic telepathic alien pixie

I've wondered, given an intelligent force that could destroy the earth, what would be a reason for doing so besides self defense?

Is it a trait of homo sapiens to attack first and ask questions later? We seem to assume that any ET would exist only to attack us.

I guess its a little beyond our capability to assume first that aliens would come in peace..

Where's Jason Wander when you need him?

/May be a bit obscure.

If we find a primitive alien civilization, convince them we're gods and take their stuff.
If they're a civilization roughly on par with us, abduct their version of rednecks and draw pictures in their crops.
If they're a race of planet destroying elderich abomanations, attempt worshipping them. Maybe they'll kill you first.
If they're the Klingon ripoffs from Battlefield Earth, we can just outsmart them. Of course, a drunken chimpanzee could outsmart them, so that's nothing special.

Us and the other higher primates, anyway.  You should read up a little on sociology.  War is pretty much a constant thing at least until societies get industrialized.

/The other higher primates will be extinct soonish-- except for a few we humans choose to keep in zoos and the ones we will do experiments on.
//Probably all the other large mammals too, for that matter.

Here's how an alien attack will more or less shake out:

/Not really. We'd be toast.

Alien attackers would just disperse into the atmosphere a toxic chemical keyed to the human genome. A little bunker cleanup afterwards and we're there. Or actually, we're not. They are.

No muss, no fuss.

Who happens to live on the planet just next to the one that is invading us.

They might not even know they are destroying us. Like if we were making a road and destroyed an ant hill.

Not to mention that their technological progress may mirror ours and have already devised countermeasures to our stuff.
