Just once, there needs to be a Tycoon game where you're some schmoe who has nothing to do with businesses or the tycooning thereof.

Panhandler Tycoon?

Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, on PC.

You could cheat, but only so many times. Then it wouldn't let you cheat anymore.

So if you got tired of the monotonous gameplay and horrible camera POV and stupid jumping puzzles and you just wanted to finish the game as quickly as possible...TOO DAMN BAD! YOU MUST SUFFER THROUGH IT BECAUSE WE TOOK AT LEAST SIX WEEKS TO MAKE THIS GAME.

God, I was so mad at that damn game.

Because People in power are Stupid: Best Cheat ever was dog mode in Rise of the Triad.

Holy shiat, I haven't heard that game in forever. Now I have to dig it out to play some more.

Also, what about the original Duke Nukem 3D? If you used any of the codes from the Doom series, it did the exact opposite of what you wanted - god mode killed you, all weapons took away your weapons and made it impossible to pick them up, etc.

the FUND cheat in SimCity 2000 could be used to get infinite money due to how the game adjusted interest rates for loans. You run FUND a few times (i think 5?) and then go and get a real loan for something like >.% which turns out to generate money instead of take it away... so not a worthless cheat...

In the same bane as Banjo-Kazooie, Gradius III would just blow you the fark up if you paused and put in a slightly altered Konami code. Of course, it would give you a bunch of powerups right until you unpaused the game. The real troll here, of course, is that in the first Gradius game, using the Konami code would give you a fully powered up ship without the unhappy ending.

In Taipan you could borrow money from the loan shark, then pay back more than you owed.  BAM, suddenly you're accruing interest at the loan shark's crazy lending rate.

When you wanted the money, you just went and took out a loan for whatever the negative loan balance was.

The trick with FUND in the first SimCity is to just do it before you built anything, wait for the earthquake then continue on normally.

Actually, it would blow up if you put in the classic Konami code. You had to input a variation of the code. IIRC it was the same but instead of pressing left right you pressed the L R buttons on the controller.

Haven't you guys played the new ROTT?  It's AI sucks balls, but other than that, it's pretty fun, if you still think that old school FPS's are fun.

In the original SimCity, you could get away with lowering the taxes to 0% for most of the year, to get a high approval rating, and then raising them for a month in December so you'd get funding. Apparently it only charged its citizens taxes once a year. I don't remember if this was exactly how it worked, since it was over 20 years ago, but IIRC it was quite useful.

I so loved ROTT(dare I say, maybe even more than Doom). It was all the little things in it, like the way you constantly yawned when you got the god-mode power up. Also, drunken missiles. DRUNKEN MISSILES!

Oh, yes, pretty much everything that was awesome about the first one (including ludicrous gibs) are back.  Oh, the VFX are so bad they are hilarious, also.  First time you hit someone with DRUNK MISSILES at close range you'll go right back to the 90's.

Twice. It was called the double-fund trick. Two 25% loans, then a real loan at a negative interest rate that gave you millions.

This lets you build anything, but it effectively gives the game a limited lifespan, because when you hit 2,147,483,647 Simoleons it rolled over into a negative number... and while SimCity 2000 doesn't have a victory condition, it does have a fail condition, when you're 100k in the red you get voted out.

right? To be fair, Roller Coaster Tycoon was a child-killing simulator, too.

Sometimes instead of doing the story mode you just want to pop some cheats in and have crazy fun.

Although I think too many cheats made one later mission in San Andreas glitch and impossible to beat, thus the game unwinnable.

2013-10-08 07:15:44 AM
It's not useless per se, but in Quake one of the cheat codes allows you to float through obstacles and walls like a ghost.  Obviously it was a debugging mode they left in for players to enjoy, but there's one particular place where it's more than useless -- level 1-3, I think.  It's where there's a hidden room full of shamblers that are auto-killed when you beat the stage to give you a superfluous kill count (you just see the kill count go up -- you don't see anything die).  Well, if you can walk through walls you can find the room, floating innocently in space with its opaque walls.  If you go inside you get to meet two dozen very angry shamblers in a tiny room with no cover.

So did I. It had character. The music was awesome and you could play it in any vehicle. You'd be running through the jungle and hear someone rocking out as they drove by on the road. THAT was cool as hell, and something I haven't really seen in any other multiplayer game... being able to hear music being played by others, and have it sound like it's coming from the radio in the vehicle.

Ah, memories.

In recent games... Red Faction Guerrilla! Yeah, you can turn that cheat on, but you can never ever save your game again EVER unless you start back over with it off.

In older games... Heretic! With IDKFA not only not giving you all weapons, but instead, removing everything you have...

2013-10-08 08:11:29 AM
There was a cheat code for the N64 Star Wars Pod Racer game that made it surprisingly fun and a pain in the ass at the same time.  It changed the controls so that you used the analog sticks on two controllers to independently control the engines.

Super Mario Bros. 3, if you used game genie would freeze forever (until reset/power down) right after killing Bowser before saving Peach.

2013-10-08 09:33:59 AM
If you held the reset button down when turning the Atari console on, your gun would shoot twice as fast at the Space Invaders.

Also, in Nintendo if you held (I think) the b buttons on both controllers when turning the game on, you got to play bouncy puck in ice hockey.

I think I was given that game as a gift from my mom. Or it came free with a new video card. I know I didn't pay money for it. But at the time, I had never played a bad Star Wars game before, so I thought, "how bad can it be, really?" How foolish I was.

Don't recall if it was a normal item or cheat... But it was worse than useless.

Sounds like modern gaming to me. I snipe someone from 1000 yards away with a silenced sniper rifle and all the enemies in the area know exactly where I am hiding and have better accuracy then I do.
