Stay classy, Detroit

Ah, similar to my headline: "A guy, whose professional life is spent with another man's hands between his legs, spent Sunday questioning the sexuality of marching band members"

the band proceeded to go on a homophonic rant afterward.

The template has long been for stuff like this:

Aftern an accusation of someone saying something stupid, that someone disappears while his/her media handlers write his/her script for the inevitable press conference. Then there's a press conference, at which said someone makes a non-apology apology along the lines of "I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings", which doesn't address being an asshole who said a stupid thing. This is accepted, maybe said person gets the fine or a slap on the wrist and life continues.

... I hope this turns out to be false, but Raiola has a history of being an arse to fans who annoy him. Even I, a huge Lion homer, am not willing to give the benefit of the doubt here. The best I'll be willing to consider, in the absence of definitive evidence, is he was trolling the band. Which in no way excuses any homophobic slurs, just changes the emphasis from homophobia to simple idiocy. Trolling anyone with homophobic slurs is dumb, like using sexist, racist or anti-Semitic slurs, because it's damn near impossible to prove you don't actually hold those views once you've used them.

/but... yeah, guilty until proven innocent I suppose.

Good to know that a grown man getting paid millions of dollars a year has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old.

so, you haven't won at lambeau in 20+ years and the thing you're focused on before the game is making fun of the band? then proceed to give up 5 sacks for 40 yards?

dunno if this is a coaching issue or a personnel issue but it seems pretty dumb to me either way

Wisconsin band director Mike Leckrone said Lewand called him to apologize Monday afternoon after allegations of Raiola's comments surfaced on Facebook and the Internet.
"He just called to tell me that he was sorry that the actions of one of his players were reported on Facebook and the Internet and that he had hoped that it would die down without any real press. He asked me to convey his apologies to the band that anyone other than them found out about it, which I will do (today)," Leckrone said. "I think he felt genuine concern for the negative attention. It was short, but we had a very nice conversation about how awful it was that he might be adversely affected."

How does Raiola even have an NFL job? Not even based on his comments, but just on his talent. There isn't a lot there.

"I'd be very disappointed if that was the case because that's certainly not the character that we want to display."

Notice the wording. They're fine with that being their actual character - they just don't want it to be displayed so overtly. They didn't hear or see anything, and I'm sure they're going to investigate it right away, but they're sorry if you were offended by one of their players yelling bigoted and nasty comments at folks doing nothing but their jobs.

Here's a thought - shut the fark up and actually play football, you ball-juggling moron.

People are surprised a football player is picking on the marching band?

It's called the ciiiiiiircle of liiiiiife...

That's how tuba players get thick skin.

To be fair, most tuba players are pretty fat...

Seriously.  Mike Utley could do his job better right now.

And in contrast to that, yesterday Aaron Rodgers was at he University of Wisconsin to give a talk on the conflict in the Congo, and asking students to pressure the university to only purchase electronics that do not contain minerals mined in conflict areas.

I like how everyone takes a story from a social media site, posted by a college age kid, and runs with it as if it is God's honest truth.  We have one side of the story, and people are running with it, disparaging Raiola for what he did without any proof.  Let's hear his side of the story.

/though he has been known to be a dick to people.

Like I noted above, this is all so tediously predictable and rote:

"My interaction with the Wisconsin Marching Band was inappropriate," Raiola said, via Tim Twentyman of the Lions' website. "I apologize to those I offended along with all of the members of Wisconsin's Marching Band. I also apologize to the Lions' organization and my teammates. I understand the standards to which we should conduct ourselves, and my actions Sunday fell dramatically short of those standards".

Again, he doesn't apologize for making homophobic remarks or singling out fat tuba players*, he's sorry that he offended anyone and caused negative publicity.
