If only there was another way of transporting goods and people over long distances.
I can't think of anything but perhaps someone else could suggest something and we can see if it floats.

They could have just watched a few episodes of The A-Team and come up with a few cheaper and easier methods that would have been just as effective.

My mom just pops a couple ambien and downs half a bottle of wine. That's much cheaper than therapy.

In fact, cut out the ambien and that's my day-to-day therapy.

Fark you, kid; you're 12. You're supposed to be afraid. In MY day, you'd have good reason, because adults would beat you with bits of plank at the slightest provocation. They'd have strapped my phobic ass in the plane and told me to shut it.

2013-10-07 04:50:41 PM
Why wouldnt they just drug the kid ?

knock him the F out and fly his ass home while he sleeps.

If I were his father I would simply tell him sorry but we we used up all of your inheritance and college money while you were crying in the UAE.

2) Drug them, and welcome to [destination].
3) Be stuck in the shiathole that is Dubai.

Is he also afraid of traveling by trains, boats, and automobiles?

I don't like flying. Inside I panic when the plane hits turbulence. But what are you gonna do? I've seen kids handle plane traveling better than me.

My dad would've beat my ass all the way back to Seattle. Actually, that wouldn't have been necessary. My dad could throw a glare that was -- while not deadly -- capable of paralyzing at a distance of 50 yards. He expected, and got, instant and complete obedience.

I'm not sure why they needed visas from Saudi Arabia to get home via ship. UAE isn't landlocked or anything. Even if Saudi Arabia somehow kept them from going through the Suez Canal, they could have sailed around Africa for less money and in less time than they spent in the UAE.

I had to see if this was a former coworker. the guy I knew was on anti anxiety meds and couldn't function without them. why I thought of a co-worker?, well he went to the company Christmas party out of town and didn't return back for a week because he'd had an anxiety attack when he got on the plane. the guy managed to pack his needs into his checked in luggage so couldn't get a doctor to prescribe something for a couple of days.

That sounds like a shiatty marriage.

You can man up, get hypnotized, find the damned doctor yourself, etc.
She can be understanding of your condition and consult with you before planning a vacation.

Warthog: Snowflake.  Of.  The Year.

Year?  Decade at least.

Although my gut feeling is that the story is making it seem like they were  stuck there because of the kid when the reality was that them going back was more like "meh, you want to try this again?  If not we'll stay in our plush villa for a few more months."

This kid was a mess.

Multiple attempts at leaving the UAE via land routes and a shot and flying with Thompson sedated proved fruitless, and only stressed the boy more. "With all the discussions, dramas and changes of plans, Joe simply lost it, and won't get in any form of transport," said the elder Thompson to Daily Mail.

There's a reason why fears like his are called irrational. My ex-wife has an irrational fear. It's so bad she totaled her car and was seriously injured because of the fear. She was driving and saw one in the car and drove into a wall because she was freaking out so bad. We walked out of our house one night and one landed on her and she ended up falling down a flight of concrete stairs breaking her collar bone. Snakes? No problem. Rodents, she didn't like them but would not freak out.

Fat farking spoiled, over-indulged nerdboy. Great way to make the kid neurotic for the rest of his life, give in to his ridiculous tantrum, rearrange the entire family's life and finances for a year, and have a photographer and writer on the flight to watch the nauseating scene.

Ever hear of 10 mg Valium as you board and 10 more midflight? How about telling him to STFU and git on the plane?

You're not afraid of flying, you're afraid of being out of control and dying because somebody else is in control (as if anybody has control over the inevitability of death). A lifelong fear of anything will make you very neurotic about a lot of things. Better get help ASAP and get over your neurosis. Do it; it's important.

I am afraid to fly too. Oddly enough, my husband told me about two weeks ago that he wants to go to Italy next year too. I'm going to try and get over my fear without drugs. I found a fear of flying course online. It's not cheap, but it's guaranteed to get you flying or your money back. I might give that a try.

Just for our edification (and shiats and giggles), what exactly about flying makes you afraid?  And how is that fear manifested (physically or emotionally)?

Don't answer if it will make you uncomfortable.

But I've always been curious about the sensation and would like to know more.

It's exactly like someone mentioned earlier...it's the part of not being in control of something and dying more than anything else...but I think the earlier guy took things way too seriously.  My wife joked about leaving me behind.  I'm not paralyzed by the fear...I'll still get on the plane.  But I'll need alcohol and/or drugs in order for me not to be a basket case.

It's a control thing with me. I Struggle with my fear pretty badly too, because logically I know it's the safest way to travel. I just can't do it.

Years ago, I dated a guy who worked for what was Northwest airlines, and he was able to get me on a plane that wasn't going anywhere. JUst to see if I could be comfortable sitting there. Nope, I had to be pushed down the jetway. To get on a plane. That wasn't going anywhere. :\

IT's an emotional response, and I have no idea where it comes from. I almost had a panic attack when my husband mentioned the Italy trip two weeks ago.

If what freaks you out about flying is not being in control, do you also fear riding on a bus or train?  Or as a passenger in a car?

I am not trying to be snarky.  Like FrancoFile, I'm more curious about exactly how the phobia works/manifests than anything else.
