Why is this in sports? So subby can use his generic headline where one can insert just about any successful college team?

It's also because subby wants to try and mock sec teams yet again, everyone hates who's on top yet fail to realize most SEC fans find it funny

this is the dumbest "sports" headline ever. Really? With that said, I'm always happy to talk about the Vols. I'm proud of my team week despite the loss. At least we stayed competitive. i.imgur.com

They robbed Pat Summit every day for 3 weeks and she doesn't remember a thing.

And, see, Peyton Manning is robbing defenses of their confidence.  And jock straps.  And he makes them poop!

no dog in the hunt, but i watched the game saturday.  my new sister-in-law is from Tennessee, so i keep a closer eye on the vols than before.  they didn't look bad at all...they're coming along.  not there yet, but a lot closer than they were.

To be fair...Saturday was recruiting day. An email was sent by the athletic department telling people not to boo their own team because they were trying to impress the dozens upon dozens of recruits at the game.

yeah we played much better than we actually are on Saturday. I put us 2 years out from being competitive week in and week out. Next year we have a really great recruiting class, the best in over a decade. In 2014 we'll be dangerous but young and inexperience. Season after next we'll have more depth and speed. Right now we just need to sneak in a big one to keep all the recruits on board. We just lost a 4 star receiver to Florida over the weekend

I just want us to get over the hump and win a few of those. Also, I'm assuming these kids are being recruited for TE and S (reincarnations of Cam Clear and Janzen Jackson).

Season 5, I think (1 Kiffin, 3 Dooley, 1 Butch). Good enough to compete, not good enough to get over the hump and win. The defense needs some work, especially in the secondary. The offense is fairly solid aside from the QB position, but we're about to graduate the entire offensive line and our top two RBs. Overall, we could probably compete if our QB play was better. The team may take a step back next year with all the experience and talent we're going to lose although the young talent that has seen the field (CB and WR, mostly) makes me hopeful for 9 or 10 wins in 2015 (which may be the ceiling).

As for the knock-on effects of the football team's performance, The Strip (Cumberland Avenue, main street which borders campus) is still a slightly grim place. Businesses, especially restaurants, depend on the tourism the football team brings in during the fall. With how poorly we've played in recent years, many restaurants have had to close or offer discount deals to stay open. I want the team to consistently win 8+ games a year as much for its effect on the local economy as for watching a good product on the field.

Followup:  Should you have kept Fullmer on the chance that you could've gotten good again or are you ok with dumping him for what you've gotten in the past 5 years?

Rajon Neal is not a good RB. He sees offensive line blockers, and he thinks that's creating a hole, when it's really defenders right there, all the while ignoring the glaring open space in the other direction.

As for Woorley, we'll see next weekend if he's grown up or if this past weekend's second half was an anomaly.

How about C.)

Fulmer was great, but he wasn't doing the job anymore.  However, the AD went for hype and hired Kiffin, which led to three ruinous years under Dooley.  If Hamilton had used some common sense the first time around, he would have avoided Kiffin like the plague and perhaps have hired a real football coach.

Rwa2play: Followup:  Should you have kept Fullmer on the chance that you could've gotten good again or are you ok with dumping him for what you've gotten in the past 5 years?

I'll echo what someone else said. Fulmer wasn't getting the job done anymore and needed to go. I will contend, however, that the AD really farked up the firing and hiring process. They fired him in the run-up to our homecoming game vs. Wyoming which we went on to lose, mostly because we came out flat. I blame that on the timing of the announcement. That took a 6-6 bowl-eligible team and turned it into a 5-7 team which hurt our stock as a program. We then hired Kiffin which royally farked us over (sanctions) and led to Dooley. That whole clusterfark rests at the feet of not only our former AD but also the boosters because, let's face it, they really run the show. For instance, word from my friends in and around the athletic department is that a few key boosters who weren't already tapped out from paying for Fulmer and Kiffin put the pressure on to hire Dooley.

As for the results, no, I'm not happy. Fulmer might have kept us at 6-8 wins a season if we'd kept him and done a better job finding a new coach, so it's hard to be happy with the results since he was fired. My ideal situation would have been either let him go at the end of his last year and finish 6-7 (instead of 5-7) then find a new coach or keep him on 1-2 more years while waiting for the ideal replacement. That would have kept the program much more stable (Fulmer was the third longest tenured coach when he was fired) and might have left us in a better position. Granted, all of this is armchair quarterbacking. I do think we're on the upswing finally, though.

Also, I never said Neal was a "good" running back. I just said he's one of our top two. Depth chart and playing time say I'm right.

Well, obviously it was the only way to get the crowd of about 100k into the game...because why would they cheer at a game where they almost beat the #6 team in the nation?

What he most likely heard about was that a pre-game commentator on the local radio station mentioned that a very large group of recruits were in attendance and went on to tell listeners only bad fans would boo with so much at stake. Hardly an email from the athletic department.

Tennessee is now "on top"?  Of what exactly?  They wouldn't be on top of the MAC this year and they certainly aren't scaring anyone inside or outside of the SEC (despite Georgia trying really hard to pull a Georgia Choke last week).  Being at the bottom of the barrel of a good conference still leaves you at the bottom of the barrel no matter how hard you grasp on to those those giant 'Bama coattails.

I think  we can all agree that making fun of shiatty teams is just that, making fun of shiatty teams.  Getting all whiny and defensive every time someone takes a swipe at your precious conference isn't really helping your "we dun care, we find it funny" stance.
