Thank God.  As much as I liked the first couple of seasons, the show went to crap but worse led to every other show like it....Ice Road Truckers Searching for Swamp Gold and what have you.

I've never seen the show, so I'm not sure how the target audience would react, but maybe somebody would be interested in seeing how the characters they know and love adapt to being out of work?

I feel bad for those guys, they get most of their yearly pay for a few weeks work and to have it taken away because some politicians are throwing a fit?  Really shiatty.

Living in the Seattle area I get to hear a lot about this, since the fishing and show both bring a decent amount of money into town.  While it will suck if the show has to pause for a year, its gonna destroy the majority of the fishermen up there who aren't on the show.  All of them have spent 90% of their budgets prepping their boats for the season, and now they are gonna have to face losing them if they cant recoup the money.

2013-10-07 01:37:23 PM
On the other side. Crab fishing should be easier next year since it will give time for the crab population to repopulate.

Call Snooki and see if she can provide some stunt crabs. I mean, she's not working right now, is she?

They'll still have a deadliest catch but it'll be about them refurbishing their fishing boats during the down time, biatching about the permits, drinking and getting into fights at the bar and so on. Then that whiny captain whats his name will go and stalk his ex to the point where she gets a restraining order against him (which he violates) and then spends some time in county cooling his heels and getting ass-raped by Nanook of the North. The captain who looks like Santa will probably get a side job at the mall as... Santa. The Time Bandit crew will spend all of their time drinking and shooting off fireworks (they already did a boat overhaul last season in a special), and the Northwestern will devolve into weirdness as they find new and interesting ways to haze their greenhorn(s). Over on the boat with the native Alaskans they will still all shave their heads for good luck and then the government opens back up.

That's right, Deadliest Catch will actually be the reason that the budget fight is finally over. Book it, done.

I do think the show's overstayed its welcome, but I'm not putting that on the fleet. And if you do eat crab, Deadliest Catch or no.

What this will mean, though, is reality shows swamping even more of television than they already have. Argentina saw the same thing when their economy collapsed. Reality shows were the only thing the networks could afford to produce anymore, so that's what they ran.

Might also be good to reevaluate how we implement government shut downs.  Rather than closing everything down, we should just open it up.  Let people go into national parks at their own risks, and leave them for dead if they get in trouble.  Let fishermen catch as many fish as they want. Stop patrolling the border and let illegals flood in.
Republicans might think twice about their next temper tantrum if the consequences go beyond just taking away a paycheck from a group they think is stupid enough to reelect them anyhow.

Why did my brain conk out in the middle of a thought?

I was going to say if you o eat crab, Deadleist Catch or no, this will show up on the grocery shelf.

Or they could figure out how to make a living doing something that doesn't employ the same basic methods fishermen have been using since the paleolithic era.

Don't eat crab, don't care. Some time off will give the crabs more time to recover and get bigger, so it's a win-win situation for them.

Nope. It's still too cheap to send out fishing boats.
And cheaper doesn't necessarily mean better.

Commercial fishing is the equivalent of stampeding a herd of buffalo off a cliff. We don't do that anymore. Not because we found something cheaper, but because we almost completely ran out of buffalo.

2013-10-07 02:47:14 PM
Continue filming, but show the crab fishermen getting drunk and angry in local bars since they can't work. Focus in on the drunken rants.

If they want to be deemed "reality TV," don't stop when reality sucks.

That depends upon how you define better I suppose. The most catch for the least cost in the fastest way is what they want to do. If you can meet those three basic goals some other way then it would be done that way instead. Dropping pots causes the least amount of damage to an ecosystem as a whole while getting the best chance of getting your quota.

I can't think of a better way to catch fresh crab in large numbers. Apparently you can't farm them like other fish and shellfish that we do farm or that would be done (this is of course an assumption of mine but seeing as that's not happening I can only assume that it's true and I'm willing to be proven wrong on this).

I'm all for regulating fishing in order to keep up the numbers and protecting species but I also recognize the need for fishing not only as a food source but also as a means for people to provide for themselves and their families by catching and selling their catch.

At least the gov't people not giving out the permits have their back pay guaranteed. So we can stop worrying about them at least.

Never going to eat the seafood out of Alaskan waters or Pacific waters due to the radiological disaster site in Japan. I would like to see these fishermen tested for exposure, ingestion and inhalation of radioactive materials and their catch tested for radioactivity.

Hand those fishermen the names and home addresses of the 32 Republicans who are behind the shutdown. Give them plane tickets and aluminum baseball bats. THAT would be a reality TV show I'd enjoy watching.

From that article:

"The crazy thing is this: it's not a shutdown based on numbers or a budget. It's based on somebody wanting something outside of the budget."

And he says he worries about everyone impacted by the shutdown, not just his industry.

"Think about that guy that's in the middle of a study that is time sensitive that has been shut down. Maybe it's a medical clinical trial study and all of a sudden it may be something that could help not only that individual patient, but maybe other patients down the road. Now all of a sudden they have to start over from scratch. I mean how much has been lost in that and what could be lost in the future?"

Can you Americans please elect this guy to Congress and put Boehner on a crab boat?
