This.

In its zeal to identify bin Laden or his family, the CIA used a sham hepatitis B vaccination project to collect DNA in the neighborhood where he was hiding. The effort apparently failed, but the violation of trust threatens to set back global public health efforts by decades.

I've seen horrors... horrors that you've seen. But you have no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that... but you have no right to judge me. It's impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror... Horror has a face... and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies! I remember when I was with Special Forces... seems a thousand centuries ago. We went into a camp to inoculate some children. We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there, and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile. A pile of little arms. And I remember... I... I... I cried, I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out; I didn't know what I wanted to do! And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it... I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought, my God... the genius of that! The genius! The will to do that! Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we, because they could stand that these were not monsters, these were men... trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love... but they had the strength... the strength... to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men, our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral... and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us.

/ my apologies, i don't mean to make light of the horror...

I'd be inclinded to agree, but there's a problem with that. Unless the disease is totally eradicated that gives it a resevoir population to survive in, and in this age of global travel that means that it could spread out to children in places which have eradicated it with vaccines, but stopped vaccinating everyone since they haven't had to any more.

But yeah, fark the CIA for giving those nutbags an actual fact to cite when they are paranoid about vaccination efforts. The folks responsible SHOULD be hung out to dry. They won't though.

Going to say my piece on anti-vax. I'm a massage therapist/physical therapist by training and I've heard a fark ton of anti-vax propaganda over the years. Granted, 90% of those that get flu vaccines do not need them, but getting rid of polio, measles, hepatitis, rabies, etc, has been great for our country. I currently live in Washington state, and last year we had a huge upswing in whooping cough cases, because people didn't vaccinate their kids. This should never happen. Every time I go out of country, I am really really glad we have those malaria pills. Science is good you god damn idiots. Yes, smoke your weed, juice your beets and be healthy, that is called PREVENTATIVE care, and PREVENTS you from getting sick, and helps you recover faster when you do. We have to have 100% uptake at our facilities, or we have to wear a HEPA mask the entire flu season this year, and demonstrate medical or religious reason why we can't get the vaccine.

You're talking about people that are mailing infectious diseases through the post office to purposely infect their children.

Read that again.  They are purposely exposing their kids, rather than vaccinate them, and one of the articles I read in the past had them actively looking for measles so their kids could get the immunity "naturally".

Logic doesn't work on them.

That's not true. The Northern Alliance was the CIA operation. Remember, the guys who defeated the Taliban in 2001, with a little Special Forces and a lot of air power assistance? That's who we gave Stingers and Dushkas and Kalashnikovs and ammo to in the '80s. The Taliban came out of the madrassas in Pakistan six years after the Soviets pulled out. That was a Saudi deal. We did give the ISI a bunch of money and aid that they then funneled to the Arab foreign mujahedin who created Al Qaeda and the Taliban, but we could hardly cut them out of the deal when we had to operate from Pakistan.

Flu shots are not unnecessary. For one thing, they increase herd immunity and stop the damn bug from spreading to people it's likely to kill. And second, have you HAD influenza? That shiat will knock you out for days/weeks. My wife was in her 30s the last time she had the flu, when she spent THREE WEEKS in bed with a high fever. We haven't missed a vaccination since. I've had the flu three times in my life, and each time I was unconscious/delirious from fever for at least 24 hours. Not to mention the headache from hell and the puking. What most people think is the flu is just a little food poisoning/parasite infection or a bad cold. The actual flu is a motherfarker.

The problem is, there are no such thing as moral absolutes.  There is always a Godzilla Threshold, a line that, after it's crossed, any means necessary, no matter how dangerous or immoral, must be on the table.  Bin Laden passed that threshold on 9/11. Individual CIA operatives may not be able to live with themselves after the way they got him, but the true morals go to the victors: The CIA was right in doing wrong because they're alive and Godzilla's dead.

Of course, the problem with using tactics that you'd use only for those who've crossed the Godzilla Threshold is that the tend to make people angry, and more likely that they themselves will cross the Godzilla Threshold sometime in the future.

That's not how nukes work. You can kill a lot of people in densely settled cities, but you just make a few no-go zones in a gigantic tribal region like northern Pakistan. Your "area" of complete sterilization is maybe a mile or two across. South Waziristan alone is 2,500 square miles.

These parents are inoculated against reason.

I have an anti-vax coworker that during a meeting went from talking about a Windows 7 driver we are still waiting on (vendors suck sometimes) to how Bill Gates was blackmailed by "Them" (the Jews of course) back during the Internet Explorer/Microsoft anti-trust lawsuit, and was forced to form his foundation that is now in the process of sterilizing Africa through vaccination and oh by the way, AIDS came from a botched batch of polio vaccination.

It was the end of the meeting, and as my other coworkers just stared at this guy with their best "WTF?!?!" looks, I just had to leave.  I've learned not to engage him on this subject, and I needed to get a lot of work done, and didn't have 20 minutes to waste arguing with him when I know he won't change his mind, despite him saying "He has an open mind and is willing to change it".

//End not so CSB
//Although... I should ask him if his kids got their shots when I do have some time to waste and the subject comes up.  I know he is vaccinated.

I blame Nixon. As a Cold War strategy in the '40s, we created American Schools all over the world. Lots of kids in Afghanistan and Pakistan were educated in them. Nixon cut their fairly paltry budget, because "gubmint waste," and the Saudis used their new post-OPEC oil money to fill the vacuum with Wahhabi madrassas. Thanks, Dick!

Given that context (the anti-vaccer protests), do you think it was a good idea for the CIA to give them legitimate reasons to oppose the vaccination efforts?

/Side topic: One of the effects of the goddamn Tuskegee experiments was giving people worried about being lied to and refused treatment an example of the government and the medical community doing just that (in living memory, yet!). I personally think, based on anecdotal evidence, that it's one of the reasons that African Americans have lower kidney donation rates (I'm talking about after death, not living donor), and it's probably contributed to anti-vaccer rhetoric as well.

What most people think is the flu is just a little food poisoning/parasite infection or a bad cold. The actual flu is a motherfarker.

I'm 60 and never had the flu. My parents never got the flu in the 1918 pandemic, or since. So I never had a flu shot (besides the logic of being inoculated against last year's strain escapes me).

Well, depending on how healthy you are now, you'll probably never get it more than once. And the flu vaccine isn't last year's strain; it's a best guess on what this year's most common strain will be (and once in a blue moon, two strains). They develop the vaccine in the spring of the year they're expecting a particular strain to dominate. Very tricky bit of prognostication, but it's the best defense we have.

Nope, doesn't fit the narrative. Down the memory hole with this inconvenient truth!

pute kisses like a man: I've seen horrors... horrors that you've seen.
