That would be quite something if you couldn't buy a whole city block in Detroit for less than that.

I turned 39 years old this summer. I was explaining to some folks this week that the game against the Reds was the first time in my life I got to watch my Pirates eliminate another team in the postseason--I was only 4 in 1979 and don't remember it, and there was only one round of playoffs in 90-92. Have to say, it felt pretty good. It'll feel even better if they can send the Cards packing today...

I was with my dad at Three Rivers in 1990 for a game against the Mets the day after Pittsburgh clinched the division--they'd done it the day before, in the last game of a road trip, and the stadium was full with a raucous crowd who had hoped to see them clinch at home, but who now were just thrilled and partying. David Cone was pitching, and the crowd was making paper airplanes out of these rally signs that had been handed out, and one of them thrown from the upper deck sailed all the way to the mound when Cone was standing there, and there was a huge roar of approval and applause. I was 16, and it was all pretty exciting. Two years later I was 18, and sitting home with World Series tickets, when Bonds failed to throw out Bream and the Pirates were sent home for the third straight season. Now, as I said, I'm 39, and it's a little giddily disorienting to be experiencing games like this again.

/still watching the games with my dad, who's still somehow alive after a whole series of absurd and serious health problems in the last 2 years...

My dad died a couple weeks ago after battling cancer for more than a year. He was a HUGE Giants fan. He was in the middle of chemo and radiation treatment during last year's world series. Sitting with him, watching the Giants win is a very fond memory. I swear it held him together.

I was at Saturday's game. The first time I was at Alameda County Coliseum since 1986, which was probably the last time it was called Alameda County Coliseum. One of the best games I have ever seen. Sogard's play that night is not getting enough credit. If he did not smother that ball in the second (?) Detroit has a runner on 2b and may have scored.

swankywanky: in case it doesn't get greenlit, here's what looks like a fun time at the A's game last night.

So less than a Dodger game. I went with a friend who wore his Detroit hat and Jersey. It made for a great back and forth with the crowd around us and some good discussion. I saw an A's game at the Cell and was comparing notes with some of the people next to me. I put on my A's cap and no one would even acknowledge my existence.

I rocked my Tigers hat for Game 5 last year, and was mostly around senior citizens, so I didn't have to take a lot of crap.  I'm Deaf, so I don't have to listen to any shouted extracurriculars.  After the game, I just shared some polite handshakes with the A's fans in my section.

/still watching the games with my dad, who's still somehow alive after a whole series of absurd and serious health problems in the last 2 years...

Similar story, and it involves sending the Cardinals packing:
Up in Boston in 2004, the first three games of the World Series was a non-stop party for me group of friends. Someone was always hosting everyone over  at their place to drink a ton, watch the game, and bask in the afterglow of the comeback in the ALCS. But as soon as the Sox were up 3-0 against the Cardinals, none of our friends were around anymore. No more parties, no more friends meeting out at the bar. Everyone seemed to make plans with their dads to go watch game 4. Just in case it was a sweep.

Dodgers, if you don't finish them off, well, you don't deserve to go on.

I don't agree with this. Dodgers need to win one out of the next two. They've proven they can beat ATL in their barn. They'll deserve to be in the next round even if this goes 5 and they still get through.

Much as it pains me to miss opening night for my beloved LA Kings, I got a ticket to the Dodger game today and feel compelled to attend. LA residents problems.

2013-10-07 04:14:09 PM
This looks like another rough inning for Detroit.

floor: NikkiPoooo: When the A's are at bat he talks about nothing but the batters, and when the Tigers are at bat he talks about the A's pitching, fielding, history, and other announcers.

Fister is slated for tomorrow.  I really don't see Scherzer going in, maybe in relief in an emergency.

No, he just pitched on Friday and I think they'll want him for a game 5. Fister is the guy for tomorrow.

First is a good choice to go. He is a solid pitcher but not what he was in 2011. Gives up few walks but a good number of hits (few are HR's).

His SO/BB is 3.61. His WHIP took a jump this year because he is giving up alot of singles.

Staily is SO/BB is  2.18. His BB/9 is double Fister's but he gives up fewer hits.

Yeah, wouldn't have been my move.  We're gonna need Kershaw at 100%.  Ryu was cringeworthy last night and may be cringeworthy next time as well.  I would take my chances with Nolasco and the bats tonight.

Of course, I am only an office worker because I turned down several major league managing offers before the season started, so take what I say for what it's worth.

kilgorn: Dodgers pushing Kershaw up to tonight......I'm thinking backfire...

I don't like that move one biatchrist, have some faith in your pitching staff.  You win tonight Kershaw is ready to go in Game 1 of the NLCS.  It's not like the Cardinals or Pirates are going to have their ace ready on full rest regardless of what happens today.   If you lose tonight, he's at least fully rested for Game 5 of the LDS.   Hell, even if he wins, how's he pitch in the next game he plays?

I just think a pitcher's routine should never be farked with.

mark_bert: germ78: Cardinals elimination day is every bit as sweet as Penguins and Red Wings elimination day!

Rex_Banner: Cole has to start game 5, right? No way you can go to AJ

I know AJ got strafed last time around, but Cole had the very good fortune of the Cardinals having never seen him before.  I'm pretty convinced you could throw almost any pitcher at the Cardinals for the first time and they'll have a large amount of success.  Then you have the matter of starting on short rest and personally I'm almost always entirely against that idea.

I think it has to be Burnett, but you yank him at the first sign of trouble.

The Bestest: phyrkrakr: Oh wait, I forgot that the games are on the Ted Turner's TBS and the Braves still play in Turner Field.

TBS sold the Braves years ago, and Ted Turner has had nothing to do with TBS for even longer.

Also, part of the deal with MLB was that TBS would get the Sunday and postseason packages, on the condition that they stop doing all the Braves games like they used to.

Yeah, that too. Oh, and I mistyped - Game 5 is 4:07 PM on Wednesday, October 9th.

It's TV markets, has been for years.  It's a farking screw job for the fans of 'small market' teams, but it's nothing new.  For example if the Dodgers finish things tonight the Cardinals/Pirates game is moved to prime time.

Buchholz, by all objective standards, looks like a meth-crazed hillbilly. He is also a f*cking good pitcher. Probably because batters standing in against him have the same feeling that people who have to stare down meth-crazed hillbillies get.

As to your question, I think he doesn't care what he looks like.  Why?  Because he doesn't have to.  Most people will never understand the luxury, but it is quite awesome to be able to have the liberty to dress or look like whatever you want.

On Kershaw, a couple articles up this afternoon at the L.A. Times.  Dylan Hernandez flat-out called Rick Honeycutt a liar for saying they were going with Nolasco today.  A Steve Dilbeck column has Mattingly making it sound like it was Kershaw who talked them into it:

"We talked to him last night and basically say, `Hey, Clay, you've got to be 100% sure. We're not going to take any chances with your career,' " Mattingly said. "That is the last thing we'd do.  And he says all the work I do, everything I go through every start, it's for this kind of game. So he was the one basically saying, 'This is why I work so hard. This is the game I want.'"  But Mattingly said having both Kershaw and Greinke helped drive their decision.  "It's like you've got two aces," he said. "Without Zack being there, I don't think you make the same decision."

You're not, but I think you may have the wrong perspective on people who don't care about how they appear.  Some are new-aged, free-spirited types - and some are, as Cagey B put it, meth-crazed hillbillies, i.e. dumbasses who lack the self-awareness to care about their appearance.  If I were a betting man, I'd wager Buchholtz does not fall into the former category.

That's what ESPN is reporting.   It's a risky move.  They could have kept with Nolasco.  I mean hell, they trounced the Braves even with Ryu's best efforts to sink the Dodgers in the 4th(?).   Even if they blew it today, Kershaw would be 100% well rested for Game 5.

If Kershaw doesn't perform tonight, the chances of the Dodgers recovering in Atlanta are really reduced.

You could argue the case, but no way make it.  Zobrist had the ball in his glove when Berry hit his leg.  Mute anyhow, since the call was actually safe and not obstruction.

There was a thread a week or two ago where someone said that over an almost 2 month period the Orioles announcers tracked only a single play that would have been obviously overturned with replay..  I've seen three in the last week in just Rays games that would have been overturned.

No, cause the tag is almost always on that side of the runner.  If you are on the outside, the runner blocks the view of the tag generally.

When the DH comes out to play the field in a game, that team loses the DH for the game.  TB's starting right fielder cramped up and they had to put the DH in to right field.

Their DH moved to the field. That removes the ability to have a DH for the Rays. I believe there was an injury; I came into the game late.

Rays are running out of bench players, so their pitchers may need to hold a bat, depending on how long this game goes.

tenton: Scruffinator: LessO2: Extra innings would kill TB since they gave up DH.

Wait...I missed something...been a bit distracted....care to elaborate?

Their DH moved to the field. That removes the ability to have a DH for the Rays. I believe there was an injury; I came into the game late.

Rays are running out of bench players, so their pitchers may need to hold a bat, depending on how long this game goes.

I guess the game doesn't go long enough for that to happen, because the guy Maddon double switched was just going to go ahead and walk off with the game.

/Joe Maddon, witch.

No, so far there's just been a handful of crappy calls that will hopefully fall under the purview of instant replay next year.

Gatorade bath killing a much more expensive piece of equipment than a mic. Bye bye camera.

I'm not a Dodgers fan, but I do live here and I love it that when things are going well, I Love LA plays. People chant "Beat LA" when they are facing LA teams, but we don't care and we play I Love LA when we're winning.

Uribe's in a contract year.  He's been clutch all year and played the best, if not second best defensive 3rd base in the NL.

"NLDS champions"? There is no such thing. Stop it.

Gosling: TBS needs to start waterproofing its stuff. That's two microphones and now a camera that have been Gatoraded to death so far.

You know what's funny, is that a far shot of another Gatorade bath with a collateral damage camera showed the camera covered up in preparation for such a thing. The main problem is if the bath comes directly at what the camera is pointing at; you can't waterproof that end as well.

And how does Uribe hit that homer? Well, hang a breaking ball up in the zone. He's always struck me as the R in WAR. He's decent as a utility fielder, so...

yeah he was better this year than the last 2. 50 rbis isn't clutch. he is decent

2013-10-08 01:15:47 AM
Well that was a surprise (seriously).  As a Dodger's fan, I thought they were sort of mediocre tonight - other than Puig, Kershaw,Crawford and Jansen.

Anyhow, good enough.

2013-10-08 01:16:32 AM
Damn, that was crazy.  Thank you, Uribe, for sucking at bunting.

Big moment for Kenley Jansen.  Great to have a reliable closer again.

And for everyone else, you won't have to hear any more tomahawk chopping until next year.  You're welcome.

Okay, I guess clutch isn't the right word.  Decent will do.  He's certainly a clubhouse guy and he meshes well with that team.

Truth be told, I haven't seen a team play off each other and have fun like these guys.  It's a great sight to see.

What the hell just happened there with a headshot of 80's Keith Olbermann chasing a Braves logo around a Pac-Man maze and eating it and OH GOD IT'S COMING TOWARD THE CAMERA!

I'm kinda expecting the Tigers to be eliminated tomorrow. It sucks as a fan and I hope I'm wrong, but they aren't playing like a spry playoff team. The "teeth of the lineup" are nibbling while the A's are hungry.

That's a good point. I just got back from the game and the energy was palpable. And I think enhanced because of the clear joy this Dodger team seems to have playing with each other. I don't know how much further we'll get this year. But it's been a blast so far.

Well, that was bullshiat. I lose power and the Sox were up by 3, power comes back, and the score is tied, and I get to see the walk off....
