let's move serves up some webpages; amber alert employs a large number of people who use a much larger number of people to do complicated work.

when parents read about how their kids can be less fat the signs along the roads of major cities don't suddenly start flashing license plate numbers.

That can't be a real site.

Let's shut down the military and law enforcement so we can keep the parks open.  That would totally make sense.

Mobama? Is that what we're calling him now? I thought the wingnuts liked to call him "Obuma" and "Nobama".

Let's Move is essentially a static site - you build it once and it stays like that forever. It's a purely informational site.

Amber Alert, however, requires government employees to maintain constantly. Since those government employees are furloughed, the Amber Alert site cannot function as it is intended.

They've already paid for the Let's Move website

Amber Alert requires a fresh supply of funding.

Facts are not pertinent in outrage.

If only there was a solution to all of this.  Like, I don't know, the house voting on the Senate bill that's been pending since before the shutdown?

And the comments on that site are largely railing against Low Information Voters for not being outraged. It's like looking into an alternate dimension where it takes a lot of deep thought to get stuck in an echo chamber.

Well they need to be in good shape, so they can try to escape from their kidnappers. Otherwise, with no Amber Alert, they get to spend some time in the Special Box Under the Stairs.

It's an incentive program!

Web site last updated in April likely running on servers that will stay running for other purposes, possibly private contracted servers paid through the year.

Ongoing federal government service requiring staffing and constant update to be of any use.

Yeah, totally the same thing.

Last blog update was Sept 30. I fail to see the problem here if this page isn't administered daily.

Just for the record, subby, webpages stay up even when the gov't shuts down. Webpages that require round the clock access, like the Amber Alert site are completely different than one that gets a blog post occasionally. Just because the site is up, it doesn't mean that anyone is maintaining it.

If we can save just one child it's all worth it.

Amber Alerts aren't actually effective at saving children; for the most part, the incidents where we know the make, model, and license number of the car are where there's a custody dispute between parents, and in those situations the child is rarely in danger.  The situations where a child is kidnapped by a stranger rarely produces actionable data in time for an Amber Alert to make a difference.

Let's Move was finished a long time ago.  When's the last time someone had to touch it?

Amber Alerts, on the other hand ... at a minimum, they require someone to be on hand to type in the kids name at some keyboard somewhere.  And that guy's been laid off for a while.

Although he's still getting paid.  If the republican trolls in congress are so concerned about this, then they can put a clean CR up for a vote, and allow the guy they've already agreed to pay to actually go into work.

Amber Alert, however, requires government employees to maintain constantly. Since those government employees are furloughed, the Amber Alert site cannot function as it is intended.

What I found interesting is how a couple of the gov sites have behaved during the shutdown. For example in the first couple days of the shutdown the FTC website would appear to render any page on their website and then immediately redirect to a page notifying that it is currently shut down. It doesn't appear to even render pages anymore. It's just funny that they were serving me the content and then they were like oh you aren't actually allowed to see this, we aren't here.

Another interesting one I found was loc.gov. Their website was "shut down" but the funny thing was that it wasn't shut down. I was skeptical that they would be shutting down their servers so I did some digging, most places were dead ends but a couple of their domains were still active and I was also able to goto www.loc.gov/search and guess what? Their document library behaved normal. Now their website seems to be back up and running without the shutdown notice at all.

The speculation is that a lot of the shutdown of web pages are veiled comments by admins to make a point.  I tend to agree being I.T. myself.  If the hosting is paid for or the power is on in the data center there is no reason that they shouldn't be up.  They should just continue on with no updates or fixes until the hosting is shut off or the power goes off.

It's a hidden statement that says "real people work here."  I for one think it's appropriate.

Tenatra: What I found interesting is how a couple of the gov sites have behaved during the shutdown.

It's easier creating a redirect page as the index page rather than actually removing all of the website assets from the servers and databases and shutting it down that way.
