Well well well, The Tea Party had their talking points lined up and ready to go since September 10. I know it's a running joke here on fark but they do actually publish talking points for those boot strappy patriots that think for themselves.

So... who is it exactly that thought the shutdown just crept up on anyone and/or that it wasn't all a planned eventuality in a political gamble by the GOP?  I mean, I guess if you weren't reading the news this could have seemed like a surprise.

But hey, don't worry, I'm sure they haven't calculated the damage of a US credit default as being lesser than the political capital they could reap from it.  Certainly they wouldn't do that.

Most amazing part is the GOP was actually making some headway on guns and surveillance/drones (completely unwarranted) with the public, and then they go and shoot themselves in the foot with this stupid shiat.

Have a lost  child?  Well, the amber alert web site is down because of the government shutdown. But don't worry, Michelle "Let's Move" site is still up. Also, park services have blocked off turn outs where people can stop to look at Mt Rushmore.  So, no only is BOB working hard to be the worst president EVER, he's also looking to take the Most Petty President Ever crown as well.  Now that's what I call Multi-Tasking.

Not me, the GOP understands that the ACA once firmly in place will become a staple of our society like social security and medicare programs they despise so much so they see it necessary to go to the wall to prevent adding another social safety net where all people need is bootstraps.

The prefix mis- means badly or wrongly.
To misinform means to deliver false or fake information. This definition implies - but does not strictly require - intention.

Therefore, to misinfrom means to badly or wrongly deliver false or fake information. I take this to mean attempting to misinform but doing it incompetently, or attempting to misinform in a way that you don't intend.

I was not surprised by much of the article, but this seems ugly to me:

Heritage Action, which has trained 6,000 people it calls sentinels around the country, sent them to open meetings and other events to confront their elected representatives.

Some mainstream Republican organizations apparently want the US to default and are sending out their private troops.

Easily the worst part:

Generation Opportunity, the youth-oriented outfit behind the "Creepy Uncle Sam" ads, is spending $750,000 on that effort, aimed at dissuading young people - a cohort critical to the success of the health care overhaul - from signing up for insurance under the new law.

That's like lasering, "F*CK THE YOUNG" across the Moon's surface.

The real question is how long are the Republicans willing to ride this train. Clearly, the "we are waiting for the Democrats to debate the issue" and "watch us let war vets into the memorial" photo ops have not been as successful as they were hoping. The general  consensus is the shutdown was caused and is being extended by the Republicans. Personally, I don't think the Republicans, as a collective, have the will to continue this to any sort of breaking point; theAffordable Care Act isn't going to be taken down like this.

This might even cost Republicans future elections. I'm a Democrat leaning Independent losing my willingness to give the Republicans another chance. If taking their ball and going home is their best plan, I don't see the benefit of having them in any sort of power.

I show a published date of 09/10 in that PDF, but that labels it as a "final" which seems to imply that they've been working on that draft for longer than that.

Obvious tag explodes.

One of the things that drives me nuts here is that the media is generally letting republicans get away with saying "well, this isn't our fault.  We never wanted the government shut down.  It's all Obama's fault, because he won't even negotiate with us."

It's like the utterly useless media jumps to this "controversy" - i.e., that the parties aren't negotiating - rather than asking the simple question "is this even a negotiation?"

It's has never been a negotiation - it has always been a demand for concessions for no good reason.  It's hostage taking, plain and simple.  The GOP has taken the position that it doesn't care if the government shuts down, and doesn't care if the government defaults on its debts.  All the GOP cares about is using those issues to extract concessions from Obama, because they know that Obama isn't insane.

It doesn't really surprise me that the media is doing nothing more than covering the "who is winning, lets see what the polls say" angle of this.  But it's still mind-boggling that the media is helping the GOP frame this as the GOP's good faith attempt at negotiating with the president.  To accept the premise that this is negotiation rather than hostage taking coupled with demands, you have to accept the premise that, as a matter of public policy, the GOP wants (1) the government to be shut down, and (2) the government to default on its debts.

I just can't emphasize enough how despicable, irresponsible, and morally bankrupt the GOP has become.

Keep in mind paid shills on major news site(not sure if fark counts) is a quite normal part of the political process these days.  There are multiple plausible entities who could be regurgitating the standard republican talking points on here.  Including regular garden-variety idiots.
