StoPPeRmobile: soporific: Null Pointer: So when the CoC backed candidates fail to win the Republican primaries are they going to then back the Democrat in the general election?

If not, then they can just STFU as they help create the monster.

They might not support the Democrat, but they are just as likely to not support the Tea Party candidate either. An extreme Tea Party candidate might lose the general, and it could be 2006 all over again. In the long run, this could work well for the CoC, as it means that they could get back to electing more obedient, and less crazy, Republicans. They might be willing to sacrifice one election cycle in order to restore order to their party.

This is assuming that the Tea Party will simply crawl back to insignificant, minority status. It's had a taste of power and likes it. And it doesn't really care whether it destroys everyone else in the process.

Wow. It's the plot of Portal 2 come to life.

Well, they will be dead soon.

That's what I'm counting on.

The Tea Party is all about fiscal responsibility and promoting free market capitalism.  Therefore, the Chamber of Commerce must be a bunch of pro-regulation socialists!

And black is white, up is down, etc.

Gaseous Anomaly: themindiswatching: Too late; there's too much derp.

I fear this, too. Unpacking a bit: The power of the GOP/Tea Party comes from the reality bubble in which its supporters live. If the establishment types start trying to support sanity, they'll just get pushed out of the bubble, not by any leaders, but by the residents. They're already trained to dismiss any source that contradicts TP dogma as "liberally biased".

So even if Rupert Murdoch himself made Fox News, the WSJ, etc. start trying to turn things around, those outlets would just get rejected, and the TPers start getting all their news from, I don't know, Brietbart, Freep, or something.

Maybe what will happen is this:

1 - a center-right democratic majority
2 - a too-far right tea party minority (w/o corporate funding) - leading to very regional condidates, none of whom take the oval for a while
3 - a weak GOP minority who retain some big-pocket funding

physt: FormlessOne: themindiswatching: Too late; there's too much derp.

Yep. As another GOPer put it, it's a matter of pride to them now - they can't back down, because there's no avenue for them that allows for a graceful surrender. They went all in, the betting's closed, and while the Chamber of Commerce can issue side bets all it wants, we're in play now.

Don't forget. The GOP can still lose AND declare victory.

They can declare victory. A clean CR at sequestration levels is well below the budget proposed by Obama and by Senate Democrats, and even below the Ryan budget. It will establish a new baseline for negeotiations well below what Democrats would have liked.

The current CR is already a huge concession by Democrats. If Republicans were smart, they'd be saying 'We fought like hell to repeal Obamacare, but at the end of the day were able to compeltely smack down the Democrat budget proposals and feel confident going forward that we'll be able to continue to constrain massive Government expansion.'

Republicans are not smart.

mainstreet62: Why wait? Start removing these dickheads immediately! You can get 2/3 in both Senate and House to oust Cruz and Boehner.

I suspect that would be considered too partisan.
Counter-proposal: 2/3 vote in the House to expel the entire House. (Senate optional; it's marginally functional, despite Cruz.) Special elections all around, and hopefully the 113½th congresscritters that comes back tend more sane -- or at least, willing to fund the government.

Difficulty: new House elections cannot be lawfully finished before the debt ceiling needs to be raised, which would require means ranging from exotic to obscure to avoid a debt default. Or, I suppose, not avoiding it; but That Would Be Wrong.

FarkedOver: Or you could just back the other pro-business party.  The Democrats.

Nah. As long as they back Republicans, they make money by cutting overhead and playing financial shell games. They've decided, for whatever reason, that's the way they want to do business in the modern world.

If they back Democrats, they would have to make money by actually selling their goods and services. They would have to start focusing on weird things like quality control and customer service. That eats into the profits.

/though quite a few more people could afford their goods and services if they would back Democrats...

At this point, I don't understand why Congress Republicans are so scared of being primaried by some Teatard.  The Tea Party brand is utterly toxic now, and even the feudalistic plutocrats now know that Teatards are bad for business, if they're willing to tank the nation's credit rating out of stubborn pride.  They can still get their precious deregulation and tax cuts from run-of-the-mill Republicans, so it would seem the Tea Party has outlived its usefulness

soporific: Dimensio: soporific: Wow. It's the plot of Portal 2 come to life.

Wheatley would be more competent at running the nation than is the Tea Party.

No, I would argue that Wheatley is exactly as competent as the Tea Party. Which is why we might have to suck it up and ally ourselves with GLaDOS to prevent everything going critical.

I like this analogy. We really are nearing the last level of Portal 2. But who would be Cave Johnson? And Chell?

The problem for the CoC and other Republican backers who want the shutdown to end is that the biggest moneyed backers of the Republican party, the Koch Brothers, are both pro-Tea Party.  And I'll bet they believe the government defaulting will not hurt them.

If the Democrats were smart, they'd hammer home exactly why the shutdown happened:  Your Republican Congressman/Senator allied with Ted Cruz to destroy your way of life, or, like a coward, did nothing to stop his government blackmail.  I imagine that 50% of the districts where the tea party primaries their Republican rep will have a Democratic congressman by the end of Election Night.

Unfortunately, in those districts, most voters are residents of the right-wing reality bubble. They'd never vote Democrat, even if the race was Hitler (R) vs. Jesus (D). Facts literally don't matter.

Hobodeluxe: Just wait until the derp squad all get a taste of what the ACA really is and not the lies they've been told by their puppetmasters.

Sadly, we've already been seeing people, happy with Ky-nect, being thankful that it was better than Obamacare. (Punchline for non-wonks and non-Kentuckians: it's the Obamacare exchange for KY)

Maybe if there was a media blitz of successful entrepreneurs who were able to go into business for themselves because Obamacare allowed them to insure their families without having a 'day job'...

Well, in an era in which 50% voter turnout is seen as a miracle, this might be the impetus to get as many people who've never voted before to vote for them as possible.  You can bet that the bastion of lost liberal causes, DailyKos, will make sure to organize heavy campaigns in red districts (including Boehner's...he ran unopposed in 2012; that's a mistake that should not happen again), and in fact encouraging tactics that might seem underhanded, but are perfectly legal (like, say, in Boehner's district, as a Democrat, choosing to take a Republican ballot;; this makes the winner to be seen as illegitimate, because it was all the damn libruls sabotaging the campaign...)

Saw a Virginia "Don't Tread on Me" license plate this morning. Almost vomited all over the place. Didn't even know you could get those at the DMV. Tea party license plates??? No Democratic one's though allowed. Also they have anti-abortion specialized plates but no pro-choice ones. Backwards state.

All you need is a design and 300 pre-paid orders and you can get a plate. That's why there are 200+ plates to choose from. You can get a "friends if Tibet" plate, an "adopt a grehound" plate or a Parrohead plate. You can also get a "trust wonen, respect choice" plate which is exactly what you claim to want.
