Once Peyton Manning wins another superbowl he can evolve into a being of pure energy, as he will have become too godly to live among us mortals

Once again, Romo out Romos himself, and costs the Cowboys a clutch win.

Oh, wait, that's what Jerry pays him to do, right?

Mike, I understand that you may be trolling (it's hard to tell sometimes), but if you don't see the constant complaining every time there's a new rule/interpretation neutering defensive play, you're more blind than the refs.

I mean, if Peyton Manning manages to RUN for a touchdown against your defense, something's wrong.

I'm pretty sure he's the only one who knew he was going for it too. The OL sold it.

Seconded. As much as I like having Peyton Manning on my team because they win with him, it's boring when every drive consists of one or two 40 yard receptions. The reason touchdowns are worth 6 and come bundled with an automatic chance at an extra point is because they were originally really hard to get - before the forward pass the guys had to make it the entire length of the field by running the ball.

I'm really looking forward to the Chiefs-Broncos games this year.  I like Alex Smith, but I don't think the Chiefs can survive a shootout.  The Chiefs D is going to have to come through big time, but Manning has always been a thorn in our sides.  It's going to be a really interesting matchup.

A couple days ago I happened to catch part of 'First Take'.

I know, I read the constant writings of hate and discontent here about the show - and I actively boycotted it for freaking months by turning it off the very first time He Who Will Not Be Named was mentioned - even in passing. (MONTHS! gah).

Anyways, Steven A. said (paraphrasing) that the moment you believed Dallas was going to pull it out was the moment they were going to break your heart; they couldn't help themselves.

This decade's Cowboys remind me soo much of the 70's Jets. Or was it the 80's Jets? (or both). I'm sorry, I don't quite remember; It's as if that part of my memory was somehow fogged by copious amounts of alcohol, bad pizza and wings. I seem to recall the Jets of old would play almost but not quite to the level of their competition - incredibly badly against teams they were supposed to beat easily; losing roughly half the time, then play very well against really good teams but somehow find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Or are these false memories sent by some demon to plague the peace of my old(er) age...

/I'm pretty positive the Jets never played again after Vinny left. I'm beginning to think there will be Cowboys fans who do not remember any games played after Troy retired.  Sigh.
//Sports. Why so many Americans drop dead on Monday mornings - their souls died the day before; it just took them a while to figure it out.

The real fun is going to come next week when the Jaguars go to Denver. Jacksonville, by the way, is 32nd in points scored per game and 31st in points allowed per game. Does the NFL have a mercy rule?

The keep saying he has a 'stinger', but it's more like a 'stinker'.

I believe Romo has by almost any measure got the talent to win a Super Bowl,  IF his dogass GM and Coach don't design the team so that he consistently needs to perform some Zeus-level miracle to do so.  Monte Kiffin's defense is 'let the avalanche exhaust itself and see if St. Tony can levitate out of the wreckage and save the day'.  I had all my wisdom teeth pulled years ago; why is every Sunday like they grew back and have to get yanked out again?  Fark that shiat.

Yes, I am.  He can throw 100 TDs for all I care.  Time and again, Romo has choked when it mattered most.  Regular season or Playoffs.  Stats don't put Ws in the column.  Closing out games does, and while I'm no Dallas fan, they've lost tons of games off of Romo's stupidity in crunch time.

Bottom line:  Romo is a good quarterback, but he is not the elite QB that Jones thinks he is.  So long as Romo is their QB, I do not think Dallas will win another SB.

Do the Broncos even play Manning against the Jags?  Isn't there a preseason, play-the-starter-one-series type of decision in a spread this big?

Joe_diGriz: Mike, I understand that you may be trolling (it's hard to tell sometimes), but if you don't see the constant complaining every time there's a new rule/interpretation neutering defensive play, you're more blind than the refs.

Which I would agree with, so long as we're referring to the complaint that professional football is being turned into touch-tackle.  (And I love the idea of a country which otherwise gives up the full-pads variant at 18--partially because pads are too expensive to subsidize on your own, but also because the sport is too dangerous to play recreationally--complaining about this.)  Not so much that the entire rule set has been warped into arena football and, coincidentally, favors the most marketable position on the field.

HotWingAgenda: The reason touchdowns are worth 6 and come bundled with an automatic chance at an extra point is because they were originally really hard to get - before the forward pass the guys had to make it the entire length of the field by running the ball.

Looking through previous seasons, and correct me if I'm wrong on this, the real change has been the fact that--where teams used to use the passing game more explicitly as a down-the-field weapon and then the West Coast Offense was designed to neutralize the 46 defense--passing has become so safe that it can be used as ball control just like the running game.  And given how quickly runningbacks tend to break down, it's simply easier to vest and design your future around that.

2013-10-06 11:59:45 PM
In his column on Friday, Simmons noted that the biggest line in NFL history was 24 point. He thinks JAX@DEN will have a bigger line. I tend to think it won't, and will settle around 21.5.

It's come to this. If only Romo had scored 52 they would have won. That is literally the conversation we're having. Not "holy shiat the Cowboys gave up 51" or "what a game" but "Tony needs to throw 6 TDs to not be a choker."

Well, he doesn't have to throw a TD, but he does have to avoid throwing a pick on his side of the field.

While we all joke about 5 yards for roughing the Brady. The nfl is nowhere near the level of favoritism it shows its star players compared to the nba and the NHL. Phil Kessel gets three preseason games for the same thing that Chris Simon got 25 plus games for

Let me know when the discipline for star players in the nfl is just as bad as other sports.

Obviously I'd prefer he didn't throw a pick but if you put up 48 on anyone you should be drinking Gatorade on the sidelines during the 2 minute warning. The Cowboys defense gave up 51 goddamn points and the only talk will be about Romo screwing up once.

You put Brady back there this week and the Cowboys lose by 45.

The loss isn't his fault but it's typical that he throws the pick at the worst possible time deep in his own territory.
