I'm a filmmaker and film snob, and I loved the Lone Ranger. Saw it twice. Great stupid entertainment.

2013-10-06 07:28:02 PM
I haven't seen the lone ranger, or heard much about it beyond apparently almost everyone hates it. That alone makes me not surprised to hear that Quentin Tarantino might like it. Not because of taste, but because of attitude.

2013-10-06 07:29:12 PM
The Lone Ranger is actually the only one on that list I've seen, and I enjoyed it.  It was perhaps a bit long, but otherwise a great summer popcorn movie with cool action scenes, great effects, and the snarky one liners you'd expect.

It's one of those movies that's a lot better than people who have never seen it realize.

2013-10-06 07:29:54 PM
It's weird to see Tarantino confirm the start of his dotage and irrelevance like that.

2013-10-06 07:32:17 PM
The Lone Ranger wasn't horrible, it was just too long. A simple re-edit that trimmed 30 min or so from the run time and it would have been a perfect summer popcorn film.

2013-10-06 07:33:07 PM
Quentin does alot better when he keeps his drinking in check.   the more he drinks, the worse things get. including his films.

2013-10-06 07:40:20 PM
I refuse to watch the Lone Ranger movie  as it took a dump all over the source material.

2013-10-06 07:43:11 PM
I'll see the Lone Ranger eventually. It was just weird to see in the ads that Tonto seemed to overshadow the Lone Ranger. And with Depp playing the sidekick what else could happen? I think it would have been better if a lower profile actor played the sidekick.

Oh man, you've got to see This is the End.  Soooo flipping funny.

The way it's written it makes sense that it was advertised that way.  It's basically an origin story for TLR.

I've been meaning to, I'll catch it when it shows up on HBO.  I was confused for a while because there was the Simon Pegg movie and the Seth Rogen movie out right next to each other with similar titles and similar sounding plots from the ads...  I want to see both.

2013-10-06 07:47:48 PM
why are so many of those movies on his list chic flicks??   methinks Quentin feels lonely and needs to get married and have lots of kids and a home with a white picket fence.

Quentin!!   how could you!!

i fear he may have shot his final load with Django Unchained.   it may be all down hill now.  i hope he's not on drugs.

Subby is trolling.  There weren't any good films of 2013, so any list will by definition be full of suck.

You forgot about Pacific Rim. Unless.... are you a Kaiju?

that list is really sad, imho.   i fear Quentin is back on the bottle again.

Shouldn't we wait for the holiday films to come out before wrapping up a 10 best list for 2013?

good point.  there are some decent films out there, you just have to look harder.  and have some luck finding them.

Didn't ST: Into Darkness come out this year?  That was good.

2013-10-06 08:01:50 PM
What kind of lame made-up name is Quentin?
Is he some kind of snack? Or is it a fish?
It even sounds French!!
I ought to go down there to Hollywood, find this fruit and punch him right in the gonads.

The best movie of 2013 was Before Midnight.

Reservoir Dogs.

FTFY.

The Conjuring was the boring. When asked for the best ten films of 2013 he probably should have stopped around four.

Also, he apparently didn't see Upstream Color or Stoker.

I didn't think This is The End was all that great. And I do appreciate stoner comedy.

Pulp Fiction, True Romance, And Reservoir dogs were his best writing. It's just been downhill since.

Django and Inglorious Basterds were both blatant attempts at revenge porn to exploit two groups of oppressed people for box office income. I'm not sure how much lower he can sink, but i'm sure we'll see soon.

I didn't see it; mecha sucks.

Wolverine was okay but it wasn't really a 2013 movie since it was more of a live action remake of the anime.

JosephFinn: Also, he apparently didn't see Upstream Color or Stoker.

Upstream Color was worse than Primer. And I liked Primer though you really have to pay attention to the film. But Upstream was just too confusing.

Why are people shocked? He's always been unapologetic about loving "bad" movies. He's made his entire career making good movies in the styles of B movies.

QT loves and has always loved bad movies.

And if just had a single "thank you Masked Man."

Stoker reminded me of an updated, more gruesome Shadow of a Doubt.

At least his silver bullets were useful in defeating the pack of werewolves. That's why the movie cost so much. Real silver bullets used for a snuff film with that hairy family from Brazil that's in the Guinness Book of World Records for Hirsutism.

My favorite so far in 2013 are Gravity 3d, This is the End, and Despicable Me 2.

I have no problem with this interpretation.  I get the feeling Joseph Cotten wouldn't mind that at all either.

Of course that one has to be highlighted, since the rest of the list isn't particularly strange.

It's been done to death on a thousand internet buzzfeedesque sites, but yes.

That year was Nineteen Eighty-farging-Four.

Ghostbusters
The Terminator
This Is Spinal Tap
Amadeus
Top Secret!
Repo Man
Buckaroo Banzai
Red Dawn
Nausicaa
Wheels on Meals

and honorable mention Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.

He's about as relevant as LL Cool J telling me which rap is best right now.

First time I ever agreed with that ol' hack. Lone Ranger was awesome. Smart fun entertainment. Great subversive political messages and hugely entertaining.

He likes Ishtar too, so it's fair to say that his taste in movies is out of whack.

I've generally liked Tarantino's movies. But whenever I see an interview (video, not written), he strikes me as a huge pretentious cine-douche. So I try to avoid hearing anything from him that isn't a script.

List is ass without The World's End.

I think i may know why every media outlet was screaming about how bad it is and telling everyone to not watch it.

Quentin Tarantino is relevant! Is it 1994 already?

Actually the Simon Pegg movie is about a pub crawl with aliens, and the Rogen is about Gabriel blowing his trumpet and the rapture.

Leon/The Professional
Swimming with Sharks
Natural Born Killers
True Lies
Shallow Grave
Legend of Drunken Master
Clerks

and maybe

Dumb and Dumber
The Mask

The Crow
Stargate
Crumb
Hoop Dreams
Ace Ventura

The Lone Ranger was the best movie I saw all summer.  It suffered from a film critic backlash against Bruckheimer, Depp and the Pirates movies; essentially, they all grouped thinked their way into deciding "enough of Depp for awhile, let's bury him to show him who's boss".  And they did.  And a lot of people missed out on seeing a fun entertaining movie.

I still think it's gonna blow up on DVD and get a sequel.

2013-10-07 01:38:57 AM
I loved "The Lone Ranger." Thought it was better than "Man of Steel" by a substantial margin.
