Oldiron_79: Before anyone gets on a "why do we waste gas on these things" rant monstertrucks run on nitromethane, not gasoline. Your prius burns more fossil fuel than a monster truck.

You might want to update Wikipedia, which lists the primary source of nitromethane as methane, and lists methane as natural gas...which it classifies as a fossil fuel.

I'm probably a horrible person, but here is a Mexican song about a monster truck.

2013-10-06 04:27:01 PM

Curious: and from this we learn the mexican monster trucks don't have kill switches. and when you don't have a kill switch what happens boys and girls?

i really expect to see the truck just continue on and disappear over the rise in the background.

It's a MEXICAN PARADOX!

Do they not have a Remote Ignition Interruptor requirement in Russia Mexico?

and for all you bible/Koran thumpers. it was Gods plan that these people were born so they could be crushed by a monster truck. Amen.

This truck was built in America in the mid-80s when there was no such thing as kill switches on monster trucks. I only know this because I immediately recognized the truck as the old Fly-N-Hi, which I had a Matchbox toy of when I was a kid.

You'd think it would have occured to SOMEONE that jumping a leaf-sprung monster truck with no safety features towards an unprotected crowd is probably a bad idea. Morans.

xxcorydxx: Hey, Conservatards,

See what happens when you don't have safety regulations and inspectors like we have here in the states? farking grandma gets ran over by Bigfoot.

I'm fine with this. It's a freakin' Monster Truck show. People who stand in the landing zone get a great view but take their chances. Thrills or... chills?

Also, I'll never forget the Mexican battery jump. Nobody has jumper cables - you just lift the good battery out of the other car, then drop it terminals down on the dead battery while yelling 'Go go go!' (Yes, in English). Hey, it works and probably doesn't explode toooo often.

What do the idiots expect? The crowd is 6 inches from the action.

So we can't link to the bicycle race crash picture, but this video of 8 dying is fine for a mainpage link.<?>

I guess I'll get over it.

killing at least eight people and dozens more,

DO the pnut butter what?!? And reporting is not strong on their list of shiat to do today... just how many IS that in Earth calculations, anywho?

/and seriously.. can you blame him? He saw a bunch of people standing over there by a fence and took a chance.

Those must be the cheap seats.  The ones directly in the path of the stunts.  WTH kind of venue was that?  An abandoned lot that had a dirt pile?  It looked like a construction site that ran out of budget.  It was a horrible scene even before the accident.

2013-10-06 05:22:57 PM
Their ticket price covered the whole seat, but they only needed the edge!

/actually, not even that

The promoters had to do something, some of the spectators were leaving a little flat.

Meh, fine. Monster trucking is pretty damn stupid. Anyone who would waste their time going out to watch it is not someone who IMHO has a terribly high value to the planet. To each their own of course. I'm sure many people think I'm an idiot too, but at least my hobbies are less likely to result in death.

Not to mention the fact that they run on methanol, not nitromethane.

Extreme engineering is always justified, no matter how stupid.

So, a monster truck show in which the only thing separating the audience from multi-ton, barely controllable vehicles is a chain link fence?

What moron thought that was a good idea?

2013-10-06 07:09:49 PM
"An out-of-control monster truck shot into a crowd of spectators at a Mexican air show"

It's their own fault for standing on the runway when the truck is landing.

Nitromethane is by-product of propane, which produced by processing natural gas. If it makes you feel better though, just pretend people are asking "why do we waste fuel on these things?" instead.

This illustrates why I don't/won't go to things like monster truck rallies, air shows and car races, (Excluding the fact that these types of activities don't interest me in the least.) I was staying with my Dad while taking an Art workshop.
That evening when I got in he was watching a race and I mentioned that one reason I don't like watching is I'm always afraid that I'll see a wreck. My Dad had just started telling me about all the safety features the cars and track has when there was a wreck, the car broke up and a tire and other pieces flew in the stands hitting fans. I pointed to the TV and told him "That's why I won't go to or watch races. I don't want to see that."

The reason people dislike monster trucks is not fuel concerns, but instead the sort of spectators monster trucks attract.

Ie, they are the sort of people who would step into a internet thread, and finding no easily refuted low hanging fruit to argue against, will spout some nonsense themselves and try to feel clever by refuting that.

Fair enough. I can't fault kids for wanting to watch monster trucks. I probably would have too if we'd had monster trucks where I grew up. I was thinking purely of adults. Redneck Nascar kind of thing, you know what I mean?

That's why you have events like this with walls.
At the very least, they organizers should have rented concrete dividers.

I know where you were going, but I'm thinkin' you're wrong.  All of my nephews went through a "monster truck" phase, and, while I've known lots of adults who went to monster truck shows, I don't recall any who went for any other reason than "my boy(s) wants to go".

Given that 4 of the 8 killed were kids, I'm going to go ahead and assume that at least a couple of the adults were there because they took their kids.

But did they have to cancel the performance by "LimoSeen"?
