Does this mean I can trademark Half Life 3?

2013-10-06 09:34:55 AM
Why'd Duke Nukem Forever have to come out? It was funny when that was the game that was never going to come out...

Give us Episode 3, you bastards!

NutWrench: Give us Episode 3, you bastards!

It's like sitting on a $500M winning lottery ticket - I mean obviously they want it to be something other than Ep 3 because I'm pretty sure they could have cranked something out in the last 6 years.- but damn it I'm getting a bit old to be waiting for video games to come out.

2013-10-06 09:51:49 AM
Guaranteed that HL3 is not coming until they can deliver what they want - which is probably their silent protagonist encased in an Oculus Rift engaging in endless numbers of "dropped in" type narratives, per his schtick.

I think HL3 won't be a game (i mean it will launch with an amazing campaign, sure) so much as a platform for Valve AND user created stories for Gordon to romp in.

2013-10-06 09:54:42 AM
Fark HF. At this point I'd rather have another Portal release, though with Chell no longer in the testing center not sure how it would proceed.

A prequel?

Half Life 3 trademark bogus?

Half Life 3 confirmed.

2013-10-06 10:06:48 AM
Of course, the article's author seems to have no knowledge of the recent news that the development team for Half-life 3 was leaked via the same Jira Project Management database exposure mentioned in the referenced source?

The trademark docs being pulled is a red herring. There most definitely IS development going on for Half-Life 3.

Just like DNF was "in development".

Though the tracker showing 45 people assigned is hopeful.

I just don't understand people angry about tge whole thing. It's not like there aren't other things to play, HL3 will appear when it's well and done, and I'd rather not see it if it isn't.

And just because they're working on it doesn't mean it won't turn into a Duke Nukem clone.

It's not the wait that bothers me, it's the hype(even if unintentional) and nostalgia that raise expectations, leading inevitably to bad reviews.  Really, it sounds like a marketing ploy gone wrong.

Steam for Valve is like WoW for Blizzard. After they got that steady stream of income they stopped giving a flying f*ck about actually making games.

2013-10-06 11:37:42 AM
That fat load Newell is making the same mistake that the Duke Nukem assholes made, sitting on a goldmine, not releasing it because "it's not good enough", and when it is released, it is a steaming pile of shiat.

I know you've got your trollpants on, but have you played TF2 (it has ongoing support, is free, and has continual new releases. Ok, I'll admit, Mann vs. machine sucked, but a lot of people still play and it's a fun game), or Portal? How about Portal 2? How about Left for dead?  Maybe left for dead 2? How about DOTA?

But no, they haven't released ANY games that have invaded the gamer mind-sphere in the last 5 years. None at all. That damn steam sure has killed them off entirely, which sucks, because they used to make games that changed the face of gaming as a whole. It'd be nice to have a 4-player cooperative zombie game, but Valve didn't make that. Or an awesome story-based puzzle game, but valve didn't make that either.

Remember when Valve started doing Half-Life 2 in episodes because it would allow them to release them much faster?

Concerning Portal, the team that made HL2 did not make it, it was a new team hired for that purpose.

Concerning the rest, please accept my humble apologies, great one, for using the word "Steam" to refer to the several MP games that they have been making money on instead of releasing good SP games. I suppose I should have instead listed every single individual game and other source of revenue tied to that platform.

Point being, they're focusing far more on MP and other sources of revenue, and now don't seem to care much about SP games. Sort of like Blizzard.

You guys have to remember that Valve employees are largely self-directed. If they want to work on a project for a bit, they move their desk over there. Which sounds crazy, but when they make so much money they can afford to.

At this point, it does seem largely logical that, by majority, the art department has been working on DotA, the programmers have been mostly working on SteamOS, and the level designers have been chugging away on HL3 for the last year. Plus whatever other internal experiments they have going on.

That strategy has never backfired on a gaming company before, huh.

They could also go in the other direction with Chell, seeing as she's now in the outside world, which may or may not be filled with Combine occupation forces.  Valve might be interested in combining the Portal gun mechanics with Half-Life's combat system.

Well that much is obvious.  A few years ago they were talking about wanting the characters to be able to sign properly, so very detailed hand animations were at some point being worked on.

When it comes to HL3, I'm more curious about how they're going to write their way out of the corner they ended up in at the end of Ep2 than I am any specific technologies they may be working on.

Wise_Guy: Is a new Fallout coming out any time soon?

Sadly, no.  Bethesda admits that Fallout 4 is in development, but won't release any other details.  It'll be a while.

I started with Fallout NV, so I'm probably going to pick up Fallout 3 sometime.  Maybe some NV mods will be interesting.

2013-10-06 01:46:15 PM

Wise_Guy: Is a new Fallout coming out any time soon?

Almost definitely. They'll probably announce Q4 2013 or Q1 2014 and give a one-year lead (based off of Skyrim precedent). Bethesda Game Studios doesn't tend to rush their games (although some bug-victims might believe otherwise). If you consider that FO3 came out in 2008, that's five years, about as long a gap as they had between their TES games. If they have a second team for Fallout, the time is about ripe for an announcement.

Portal is played out, HL2 Ep2 ended kind of grim. But there are clues in there, pointing to where the Aperture Science team had built a ship that brought THEM to earth.

I need to install Steam on this new machine and replay everything on this over-spec laptop.

I think if Half-Life 3 were to come out today, it would've played a lot like Bioshock Infinite, assuming Valve did their usual bang-up job.

baufan2005: I enjoyed half life 2 until the driving parts.  That's when it lost me.

I thought the driving parts were great. Replaying it a bit back, I noticed they balance out parts where you're extremely vulnerable and have to rely a lot on shooting (Nova Prospekt, the city battle towards the end) with parts where you're more powerful and have to worry less about dying all the time (the driving bits, the super gravity gun).  It varies up the pacing a bit and gives you breathers. It made it a lot easier to play and more enjoyable for me than some games that are just full-bore all the time.

You know what, I'm sick of this. fark Valve and their little gaames. If it reallyiisn't coming out for "years" then it really is gonna be the next DNF. At this point, Valve are the cable guys from south park. They get their rocks off farking with their fans cause they know that whenever they do get around to making it, everyone will buy it, even if it is shiat. They know that once they make HL3 they can't fark with us. They're a cat playing with a mouse.

Get it through your skulls people, Valve will never make HL3 so long as people want it. The best thing you can do is stop generating buzz (especially fake buzz) and stop talking about it and valve. Then see how fast they produce it. Valve isn't in this for money, they're already crazy rich. Its about grabbing their customers balls and showing them who the biatch is in this relationship. Its us people. Every time fake HL3 comes up, the guys at valve jizz themsleves laughing.

NutWrench: Give us Episode 3, you bastards!

At this point, Valve will probably going to wait until the new engine is done.  Then it will use 3 to showcase all the bells and whistles.

For any other company, I'd say the game won't live up to this much expectation and hype, but Valve might pull it off.

Kinda irrelevant. They've chosen to produce a number of games which have infested and changed the entire gaming gestalt.  It's really not relevant if YOU find those game appealing. Especially since if you review their release/product list history, Single player games are far and away the least produced product they have. The vast majority of their catalogue (Valves, here) is multiplayer specific (I'm counting portal 1/2 as single player here). Counterstrike, L4D, TF, TF2, DOTA, etc.

You're essentially biatching that a multiplayer company which produced a couple of great single player games has dared not to shift horses entirely to single player instead of the multi player aspect.

I'm sorry, but Half-Life 2 sucked. It had moments, but nothing like the first one. It was a lot of fighting on rails, and standing by watching the story unfold without having any real choices as to what you did. That, to me, is not a game. It's a movie that includes a few button-pressing interactions.

Team Fortress is clearly the best thing to come out of Half-Life 2.

I thought HL2 was okay, although I played it well after its initial release so it seemed a bit dated.  But you're just saying you don't like linear FPS games, which is fine, but it doesn't make much sense as a critique of a game, that's a critique of a genre.

From Wikipedia: In an interview with Half-Life 2 "episodes" are essentially Half-Life 3. He reasons that rather than force fans to wait another six years for a full sequel, Valve Corporation would release the game in episodic installments.

Yeah, about that...Been almost 6 years to the day since Episode 2. Count me in the group that believes Valve isn't bothering with HL3.

2013-10-06 08:29:42 PM
I don't care if HL3 is the bestest game everdy ever, I just want closure on the plot. I wanna know what Gman is, I wanna kick some more Combine ass, and I wanna see Alyx get her revenge for her dad.

Except all those games you're listing weren't made by Valve and in one case was completely ripped off of a blizzard game....

Just because they were bought out doesn't mean that Valve is excused of not making hl3 because a new counter strike came out.
