Oh....yay....

The internet.

Letting me know that people I once thought were cool are actually nutjobs, since 1997.

Well... Many, many humans will certainly die before 2030.

So he's partially right. Sort of. He's not a mathematician or anything, so credit where credit is due, right?

So... everything comes up Peaches?

There is only so much space we can herd all the humans into and make a profit on. Convincing them to pay for the air they breath will be the end all. Make way for a interstellar highway.

I saw the Boomtown Rats in 79 or 80. Great live band. "Tonic for the Troops"!  So, he did something after that?

The bulk of them also knew it was poison and only drank it because their kids would be shot instead of the sweet easy death of toxic flavoraid.

The survivors farking hate the way the phrase is used now.

I imagine the makers of Kool-Aid aren't exactly tickled pink lemonade by it either.

End_Of_Line: JRoo: I can't wait that long. Can't we blow it up now?

Fine by me.

Lets talk frankly about internal cleanliness: About damned time. I've always said the hardest part about the end of the world is waiting for it to happen.

Right on. Seventeen years is too long to wait. Do it now.

I'm on board with this. How many votes do we need for it to happen?

IlGreven:

It won't be war that kills us, Bob.  It'll be ocean acidity.

Imagine a Lake Nyos incident, except replace Lake Nyos with the Atlantic Ocean.
More horrible bullshiat.   This is the new, improved crisis, expected to replace "global warming" once that runs its course -- and it's already fizzling out.  The problem (as you would see it) is that ocean life was just fine with TWENTY TIMES as much carbon dioxide in the air as we have now.  If the seas survive, and thrive, in levels twenty times the current level, why would you even think that levels, say five times as high as today, would kill everything?  You panic mongers are slipping.   You're just phoning this crap in now.  Put some work into it, FFS!

You know, your ignorance is just staggering.

Although IlGreven is wrong about the mechanism, he's right about the ultimate result. The Lake Nyos event was the result of a massive CO2 outgassing from beneath a lake covering a dormant volcanic crater. The heavier-than-air gas spread outward after the outgassing event and suffocated nearly everything alive in the region.

Although it's not a widely accepted theory, or not believed to be the only cause of the Permian Extinction, a major anoxic event is known to have taken place at the Permian-Triassic boundary, probably in conjunction with the release of the megavolcano known as the Siberian Traps; this massive depletion of oxygen combined with an increase in hydrogen sulfide bacteria in the water would have created a positive feedback loop in the oceans and also not incidentally in the air above the oceans.

Also not incidentally, during the Permian-Triassic extinctions, about 90% of all life became extinct--95% of marine life, 70% of terrestrial vertebrates, and to date the only mass extinction of invertebrate land creatures (i.e. insects). So yeah, "five times as high as today" might well kill everything, or pretty damn close to it. I can understand your minimization of anthropogenic climate change, but you really need to comprehend the difference between a Lake Nyos event and a little atmospheric warming.

He's just being paranoid.  The mass die-off won't be until around 2050, and it will only be 4/5ths of the human population, not the entire species.

And the cause will be oxygen depletion due to ocean acidification - climate change won't even figure in it.

Apik0r0s: DON.MAC: How did this guy end up being worth more than a billion dollars?

I like to think that I have a basic understanding of rock, am aware of the Boomtown Rats, and I'm with you - who the fark is this guy?

I really didn't think he or they had done that much.

"Bob Geldof is an Irish singer-songwriter, author, and actor with a net worth of $70 million. Bob Geldof acquired that net worth as the lead singer of the popular rock band The Boomtown Rats as well as with a successful solo singing career. He now uses his fame for political activism efforts. He was born in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, Ireland."

I have no idea why the source linked from Wikipedia thinks Bob Geldof is worth $1.2bn, given that the Sunday Times rich list puts him at £32m, but the overwhelming majority of his wealth comes from televison production.

He is in the same crowd as Ted Danson who  said in 1988 that the oceans would be "dead" in 10 years

He has been nicknamed "Sir Bob" by the Brit media.  I doubt if the "Sir Bob" is meant as an accurate representation of his status.

THE GREAT CYCLE:

global warming/climate change in news = more interest in it = more funding for research = more scientists writing papers about it = more of them getting published =  more global warming/climate change in the news

It's not about climate change. It's all about money.

/thinks it's funny how they changed "global warming" to "climate change" to more suit their research ("see, now it can mean a temperature fluctuation BOTH ways, not just warming! now we have our ass covered!")
// spend your $ and time on other scientific research topics.
/// just a cycle. I highly doubt that earthlings caused ALL of this horrible climate change stuff in JUST 150 years. Where are the farkers with their charts in this thread?
Earth cools. Earth Warms. Earth moderates itself. etc. etc. all throughout millions of years.
//// Geldof looks horrible in blonde hair.
// he was the better choice v.s. Roger Waters to star in "Pink Floyd's The Wall", I'll give him that.

The latest warmer meme: Global warming is hiding deep in the ocean. It hides so far down that we can't measure it. Kevin Trenberth says the slowdown in the rate of global warming MUST be due to heat getting trapped by the ocean via fresh melt water mixing with warmer denser salinated water recently warmed by the time at the surface, the denser warmer water sinking. But he uses this to explain a slowdown in rate. Why? Does the ocean not do the same when the rate was higher?

Makes no sense

No, he really didn't. All he wanted was to see Paula happy, even if that meant her being with another man. He even spoke about their relationship at Paula's funeral (which I attended).
