He looks pretty far away from the city in that photo, but almost anywhere in Griffith Park, he'd be only a mile or so from a neighborhood, and if you track the locations they found him in the article, at times he was ripping apart a raccoon within a hundred feet or less of some homes.

I used to hike around Griffith Park at night (in a group) at least once a week. Was hiking in the Park during the Rodney King riots and saw the fires arising downtown. Camped at "Boys Camp" as a kid. I've seen deer, skunks, raccoon, coyote there, and would have loved and been scared shiatless to have seen a mountain lion.

Not too fearful now, sadly, I live about 400 miles away.

A mountain lion in Griffith Park does scare me more than the ones in the Santa Monica Mountains or in the Angeles National Forest or in places where there are just a lot more range for a cougar to wander around. (Of course, Griffith Park is already home to lions, tigers, and bears, (oh my.))

I am glad they seem to be coming back and sort of wish this male had a female to keep him company.

I hike in the Santa Monica Mts, but haven't been to Griffith Park yet.   I'm shocked he made it across both the 405 and the 101.   That cat got some balls on him for that  LOLOLOL!!!

I remember being woken up by the news helicopter, and reading all about it later in the day. I was hoping somebody would make a joke about it being shot so close to an Apple store - they could have named their next OS "Dead Mountain Lion."

So long as he sticks with his natural prey, and people don't end up on his toothpick, he'll be okay.  Let's hope that he remains safely off the radar of the general public.

Oh dang, have you seen the pooms up in the hills man? I was just straight lampin' with Chico and Lil Pete in the Griffs on some shrooms like three Fridays ago and Lil Pete was like, "shiat! shiat! What are those eyes man? What the fark is with those eyes?" and rolling around on the ground. And Chico and me were just laughing our asses off because like Lil Pete could never handle his shiat. But Lil Pete damn near rolled his smooth Italian ass into our camp fire, so Chico and I had to sit on him to get him to chill the fark out. But then I saw these two blue dots and they were looking right the fark at me. And I knew they were real and not just like my tripping because I've tripped enough man to tell like what is really real and not just like super real like the things that aren't real when you're tripping and these eyes were just regular real not super real. So I get Chico to look at it and he knows too, so we just farking bolt out of there. When we got back to the Sentra, Lil Pete is mad stressing because we left the campfire burning and like an untouched six pack of Bohemia. And I mean, I'm not down with Bohemia, not really my steeze, but I don't want  my high school yearbook picture to be on KTLA with a banner saying, "Shroomhead causes massive Hollywood wildfire," so I'm like fark I'm gonna have to put that shiat out. Lil Pete is just farking freaking in the backseat in a fetal position like a damn pussy, and Chico is behind the wheel just white knuckling and yelling and me to get the beer and shiat and to hurry the hell up because there's a goddamn monster out there. So I just want to farking bounce because Chico and Lil Pete are normally pretty cool, but they are mad off point right now, but I'm not walking all the damn way down back to Hollywood in the middle of the night like some wackass jogger asshole. So I'm running back up to the site and it's pitch black and I barely know where the hell I am and I know there's a damn lion stalking around. I keep my shiat under regs though, and I get to the site and put on the fire and grab the beer and start running back to the car. But out of the corner of my eye I saw the puma and I swear to God it had a human face. I turned to look at it but it vanished and I tripped on some bullshiat root and fell on my shoulder. The beer was fine though and I made hell to Chico's car. I just bailed in and we took the fark off. It was pretty cray man, but you definitely need to see the pooms because it's like a beautiful creature in our urban backyards man.

So?  Anyone that's lived in even a slightly rural area has had predators kill shiat literally on their lawn.  And I'm talking about a rural  area, not an actual empty field, you'd get cougars wandering through the suburbs near the cities in horse or corn country as well.

My elementary school had lessons on how to deal with large predators, which boiled down to "don't fark with them, and leave if you run into one".  We had zero incidents of people being bitten and almost no incidents of livestock other than chickens being harmed in my entire childhood.  I can understand people being a bit more worried where a wild area abuts a very heavily urban location where the people are clueless, but c'mon, still not that hard.

Clueless enough that running away from a puma ends up flipping the switch from "Oh hai there" to "OMG FOODZ!" in their brain. When it comes to a puma you shout and scream at it and try to make yourself appear as large and threatening as possible to make it think it doesn't want to fark with you. And then if it decides to attack you anyway, you punch it in its little puma face until one of you is dead -- or it decides to get the fark out of there.

What a cougar's wild nightlife might look like

2013-10-06 12:21:17 PM
At the first location, right off a paved road in the park, they found only the malodorous rumen, or stomach, of a deer. They surmised that coyotes had dragged the deer's body away. Next, at the bottom of a ravine, Serieys found a coyote carcass, with part of the muzzle intact. Ordeñana said this was the first documented P-22 kill that was not a deer.

(In contrast with the all-you-can-eat buffet of a 150-pound mule deer, the raccoon could be considered more of a protein bar snack.)

There was a mountain lion attack in an Orange County regional park on two people on two consecutive days a few years ago. The first victim was alone and was killed on his bicycle devoured and dragged to a lair. The next day a woman got most of her face ripped up but was saved by her friend and a passerby. The authorities brought in dogs which took them to the lion and first victim. So when this lion maims or kills somebody and a jury finds out that the city knew there was a large dangerous carnivore in a park and didn't do anything about it how much money do you think they'll award the victim because I'm guessing it'll be in the $20 million range.

Not much of a story I'll admit.
