Because games' technological capabilities have increased so rapidly since "Ocarina" was released, I suspect the title's reputation is somewhat inflated due to nostalgia of critics of a certain age.

Sure, because we all know improved technology automatically makes games better.

FTFA: "Ocarina" portrays the apprentices or journeymen as lazy and shiftless, and the boss as the only one willing to work. "Young men these days don't have any ambition," the boss says. "Do you know what I mean, kid? My workers are just running aimlessly around the village, and they're not making any progress at all ... Even my own son doesn't have a job, and he just wanders around all day! They're all worthless, I tell you!"

That's because they are worthless. And they to run off and become thieves until they get captured and imprisoned by the badass Gerudo women. And Link frees them and they decide to go back to honest labor. Nothing in the game suggests all workers are like that.

FTFA: The racial, ethnic and religious traits of the "good characters" and the "bad characters" within the game also demonstrate a certain xenophobia. All of the good characters, such as the Hylians and Kokiri, are white.

Someone didn't get as far as Goron City. Nabooru and the other Gerudo turn our pretty well--its just Ganondorf who's a douche. And the Zora's sure as hell aren't white. King Zora is a farking fish.

The entire marketing strategies of Sony and Microsoft, and Sega before them, depened on spreaing this meme. Nintendo hasn't fallen into that trap quite so often, but even its record is far from clean.

I've read her stuff on a few video game sites before.  There is literally no way to win with her.

Female character needs rescuing?  Weak and anti-feminist.

Female character is strong and independent?  It's just a woman acting like a man, therefore anti-feminist.

Male character needs rescuing from a woman?  It's just the same "damsel in distress" archetype reversed, therefore anti-feminist.

Female character has a revealing outfit?  Eye candy for the male gaze, therefore anti-feminist.

Female character wears practical, unisex battle armor?  She's prevented from expressing herself as a woman, therefore anti-feminist.

Someone in 2013 was paid actual money to write a Marxist critique of a game released fifteen years ago for the Nintendo 64, a game about a time-traveling elf who raids dungeons to defeat an evil wizard-cum-pigman.

FTFA:
"Folks around here tell of a fabulously rich family that once lived in one of the houses in this village," an elderly character in Kakariko confides. "But they say that the entire family was cursed due to their greed! Who knows what might happen to those who are consumed by greed."
By focusing on the greed of individuals, the game ignores how private property incentivizes and even mandates such behavior. And with this moralizing focus comes a belief that society's economic ills are intractable because of humanity's flawed nature.

So in her view, the character should have ended with, "Who knows what might happen to those who are consumed by greed?  Perhaps some sort of karmic retribution in the form of arachnid therianthropy will strike down those responsible for an institutionalized caste system based on the facade of property rights.  Before continuing with your adventure, let's reflect on the values in our lives that are distorted by systemic greed that has tainted our relationship with our common person and how it is not just optimistic to believe we'll overcome them, but prudent."

Unfortunately this dumb broad doesn't realize that the game would sell too well with dialogue like that and we have anti-trust laws to break up such powerhouse forces.

This is just the flipside of the obnoxious conservative.  Liberals sometimes forget is that there are obnoxious liberals.

Last week my team and I had to do work at a satellite office at 6 in the damn morning on a Saturday.  There's a food court in the bottom of the building.  At 6AM exactly one restaurant was open:  Chik-Fil-A. Nothing else was opening until 11am.  I got a large coffee and a biscuit because it was six farking AM and I was hungry and tired .

The office manager, a woman I have known for 15 years, lambasted me for going to CFA.  Once she was done with her rant, I told her it was the only thing open, I didn't mean anything by it, and I just wanted some farking breakfast.  She told me she brings hers from home so she doesn't have to go there.   I pointed out, diplomatically, that I didn't live there so I didn't have a home to bring anything from.

She's an older lesbian (my age - 45), so she has a tooth and a nail in the fight, but at some point a person has to let go of the idea that everyone else applies the same stringent boundaries, rules, or worldview that they do.  I wasn't visiting CFA on anti-gay day or whatever nonsense they had last year, I was getting breakfast at the only place I could find quickly in another city at 6 in the morning.  I'll be honest, since we all got in a 2am and were dog tired, if there was a restaurant called "No blacks, catholics, Italians, Irish or jews allowed - and fark the muslims" I would have seriously considered wandering in if they had coffee.  Still, she was irritated, so I took her out to lunch to talk it out.  I can't say she came around that much, if at all, but at least she accepted I wasn't making a statement showing up with breakfast.  I suspect she only went that far because we've known each other for so long.  If I had been one of the other team members, she would have pegged them as anti-gay without knowing anything about them.

The whole thing struck me as absurd as my aunt tsk-tsking me for buying Ben and Jerry's ice cream last Thanksgiving.  No one else is making a decent cherry cordial (Cherry Garcia) ice cream anymore EXCEPT Ben and Jerry.

I'm all for personal boycotts if you believe in them - I'm all about you being you.  But don't get pissy if other people aren't on the same page.

There is inclusivity: the idea that all people should be welcomed. There is also, for lack of a better name, what I will call counter-exclusion: the idea that some group other than those traditionally considered "excluded" should be excluded instead.

I bring this up because I believe our socio-political climate has reached a point where I think it would be useful to distinguish between these groups. Exclusion in the name of inclusivity is disengenous, but it's not hard to argue that some people deserve to be excluded. The idea even has a lot of appeal. It just needs another name.

Yeah, because I need to get burned to know fire hurts. Or I need to eat shiat to know it tastes awful. Or I need to open my door to Mormons to realize I don't care or want their message.

I have more important things to do than dedicating time to nutjobs. Congratulations, you're just teaching the controversy now.

Anita Sarkseesian has nothing of value to contribute, at least not on purpose, since she's still works as a bad example.

I gave her enough time when she started and after a while I realized there was nothing there. I won't spend my life giving her new chances. She already swung and missed.

And I did read the article. It was hot garbage too. Micro-analyzing 15 years old electronic media from a Marxist and/or feminist point of view is an exercise in absolute futility.
