Nothing. They never existed in the first place.

The idea behind "Compassionate Conservatism" was to cut funding for Head Start, school lunches, Pell grants, student loans, welfare, and anything else that might even remotely be considered "compassionate".

Eventually, people figured that out.

Yes, we get it. Like an abusive ex husband under a restraining order, the GOP is fully committed to punishing America for rejecting them.

With every bullet.

Sadly, with Rick Scott, I kind of do miss ol' Jebby.

Not that I'd ever vote for him.  For anything.

What Happened to 'Compassionate' Conservatives?

You mean modern Democrats?

Look, if you Dems are gonna push Hillary on us, of COURSE we're gonna have another Bush run. Ever think of that? Of course not. YOU NEVER THINK!

fusillade762: What Happened to 'Compassionate' Conservatives?

Nothing. They never existed in the first place.

Agreed.

Dubya was voted into office on a platform of compassionate conservatism and a humble foreign policy.

Both positions were later proven to be flat out lies.

And yeah, no more Bushes in the WH. Evar.

FTA: Chris Christie: "See, I think as long as you stick to your principles, compromise isn't a dirty word."

Well, there goes Christie out of the race.

"Compassionate conservatism," i.e. being compassionate to conservatives. (Oh, and only the rich ones.)

The most frustrating part of politics in this country is the constant reminder that, on the whole, we are not a smart people.

George W. Bush is a true example of a COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVE. He will bring honor and decency back to the White House.

We agree that $1.25/gallon is a ludicrously high amount. George W.  Bush is a former Oil Man with many close ties to arab oil interests. He'll be able to talk with the middle east and truly be the Inside Man to ease the stress on struggling motorists.

America is in no way the world's police, and has no business going abroad sacrificing young american lives telling other countries how they should be doing things. George W.  Bush will put America first, and focus on true Homeland Security by dedicating his administration to a mighty MISSILE SHIELD.

We cannot have the proof... a smoking gun... to come in the form of a mushroom cloud. By building a Missile Shield, American families will be prototected from any and all harm from rogue nations. George W.  Bush will combat the true dangers of the 21st century, all the while helping families grow at home.

By encouraging deregulation in the private healthcare and banking industry, free market forces will ensure competition drives prices down, making private healthcare and the American dream of home ownership affordable to all. It is unamerican to inject the Government in other people's business, and it is a core Republican belief that Government should be so small as to be able to drown it in your bathtub. Privacy, above all, is the God-given right of Americans.

Vote Compassionate Conservatism.
Vote fiscal responsibility.
Vote small Government.
Vote GOP.

Vote Bush 2000

The first President Bush wasn't bad.  I think he (along with Reagan) probably deserved prison time for Iran/Contra, but as far as presidents go, he did an OK job.  Certainly by comparison to his son, he was a fantastic statesman, though that's a pretty low bar.

I don't think compassionate conservative means guaranteeing you a government job. That would be communism which isn't really the same as American-style conservatism.

We know.

2008 happened, and that gave them the means to drop the act. I remember the Republicans coming on TV after the '08 election, in which they got spanked, and saying, "Ok America. We get it. We hear ya." and making grand talks about coming up with a new version of the "Contract with America" and writing a party platform worthy of advancement in the new millennium and blah blah blah.
So, they went back to the drawing board and wrote up a new contract that was all talking points and no substance, but was new. And, since they were writing new documentation from scratch, they didn't bother inserting the words compassionate and conservatism together anywhere. They simply dropped it from the language.
It was smart of them to do so. Their record during the Bush administration made it impossible to defend such a ridiculous claim. They stopped making the claim and the media stopped asking about that "flavor" of the right wing culture.

Sum Dum Gai: The first President Bush wasn't bad.

George Bush Sr is responsible for much of the horrible stuff that happened after his presidency. Bush Sr could have stopped Iraq from invading Kuwait but he didn't. After the first Iraq War, we stationed troops in Saudi Arabia which is what really pissed off the crazies over there, leading to much of the terrorism which followed. All the big terrorist stuff happened after Bush Sr stirred them up by putting infidels in their holy land.

Bush Sr is seen in a relatively good light because he was the last President that didn't serve during when we had such easy access to information. He was able to be President without the scrutiny that exists today.

A regular conservative rapes someone and tells them they deserved it.  A "compassionate" conservative rapes the same person, and then tells them they loved it.

2013-10-05 06:50:35 PM
Whenever things go bad for them they make some cursory talk about how they need to change.  They did it when they got destroyed in 2008.  They did it again when they got walloped last year.  And they'll do it again after they emerge from this mess less popular than ever.

And then... they'll just etch a new notch in the dial and turn the derp up to 12.

Well, I mean, Prescott Bush DID support the Nazis. Until it became unprofitable. Didn't he try to overthrow the government too?
