Edison was much more like Bill Gates -- buy up the scientists and patents and then squeeze every penny out of them.

reuse of others' ideas? that is just about everybody.

it's pretty hard to have a competitive market if companies can only offer something completely different after all.

Bill gates didn't round up stray animals and have them publicly electrocuted to discredit his rivals and advertise the "dangers" of using ac technology.

The cash infusion from Microsoft was what I was referring to, primarily, with that part. I think most business analysts at the time agreed that there was a significant probability of Apple's demise without that cash infusion.

I would say that there is very little doubt that Apple got a lot of its GUI from Xerox PARC, and I've seen good cases made for them adopting design styling cues from Braun.

As for adopting anything technical from Microsoft, well, let's see. If memory serves, no one had anything like the Device Manager until MS introduced it in Win 95.

It's been a while since I took a look at a Mac system, but I'd be surprised if they don't have something equivalent in functionality, and maybe in appearance.

I'm genuinely curious - can you tell me if the Mac has a Device Manager, and if so, is there any evidence that it predates Win 95?

Thanks.

Bill Gates did hire the guy at Digital Equipment Corporation who created DEC's most important OS and have him bring over the code for the more modern version he and his team were working on.

Then they released Windows NT which just happened to be based on exactly that code.

Literally, Windows is based on stolen source code.

Then there was the time Gates and Ballmer tried to screw Gates' co-founder of Microsoft out of his share of stock while he was distracted by his fight against Cancer.

Quick... How much did Microsoft "invest" and how much cash did Apple have on hand at the time?

Drop, meet bucket.

What happened was that Microsoft got caught red handed stealing Quicktime source code and they worked out a settlement deal to drop the lawsuit.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood: As for adopting anything technical from Microsoft, well, let's see. If memory serves, no one had anything like the Device Manager until MS introduced it in Win 95.

Nope. The first Mac with expansion slots back in '87 was plug and play based on a standard created at MIT. This happened long before Windows 95.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood: I would say that there is very little doubt that Apple got a lot of its GUI from Xerox PARC

There's no doubt. There is also no doubt that they paid Xerox up front when they got permission from Xerox corporate for a tour of what they were doing at PARC.

Contrast that with Microsoft outright stealing code from DEC.

acestream with ts magic player allows you to stream torrents (a la hulu) directly from sites like bitsnoop.  I set it up for football streams initially, but instant commercial free boardwalk empire is mighty nice.

I'm shocked that the article wasn't about Behringer. I mean, I like their stuff, but I don't think they have a single original product.

Citation? This is a story I'd like to hear, since VMS was written almost entirely in VAX assembly, while NT was almost entirely C from the beginning.

Why would you like Behringer?  They make bottom of the line audio equipment.  Their quality is only fit for Walmart sales.
