"It is clear that some students badly misrepresented the culture of this university," they said in their statement

And based on your response, I'd say they represented your culture quite nicely.

FTFA: He said the cast was later told after the play's second act that the football players and other athletes in the audience were going to apologize after the show.

And my response if I was a cast member would be "I'll believe it when I see it and I'm not holding my breath."

Good, I have money on Ole Miss.

I hope part of the education program includes the fact that Matther Shepard's participation in a meth ring probably factored more into his death than, you know, him being swishy.

I wasn't shocked at all to hear that a performance of The Laramie Project at Ole Miss was interrupted by homophobes. I am shocked, however, to hear that football players at Ole Miss attend theatre.

the meth story was published in the gddm advocate. the play has become a business, like holiday on ice. meanwhile the US still does business with the saudi vermin.

I think the bigger crime here is - why is anyone watching that play?  It sounds god-awful.  Were they forced to attend?  I can't imagine a college athlete willingly attending a play like that.

The "meth story" is based on hearsay, and no concrete evidence.

Jimenez's book is based on shoddy journalism, slander, and playing on right-wing fears of a "Gay Agenda".

And what in the hell does this have to do with the Saudis? Are you hitting the meth yourself?

An underwhelming college administration response to bad behavior by its students? No way!

I'd bet money that a college administrations definition of justice = saving face.

Let's say his book is 100% accurate.  So what?  It's not like this is the only hate crime against gays ever  (and it is still a brutal murder).

And what if the play were 100% fiction?  Does that excuse yelling homophobic slurs and harassing the actors?  Wouldn't it be, at minimum, incredibly rude for an audience to yell misogynistic slurs while watching A Doll's House?

Required for a class they were taking. Which makes it even worse. All they had to do was shutup and sit there and they get a credit. How you fark that up I don't understand. Explains why football players have such a hard time graduating though.

I'd be curious to see how they'd track any follow-up to this story. I feel bad because there are a lot of students who were just in the audience who now have to go to an extra education meeting and did nothing wrong so much as went to the same performance as the team did. I also wonder if all 20 of these players will ever make it to the education thing once this story gets past the Alabama game analysis.

Apik0r0s: Fark Ole Miss. It's become like a code around here with the little rich white kids. Suburban punks who drive big pickups and wear camo Ole Miss hats, it's crypto-racism used by the Jr. GOPers.

I have that same opinion about "Salt Life" stickers/decals.

Ole Miss/Oxford is actually a nice place. U92 and a pot farm or two (possibly currently unguarded).

And we're done. Education should be part of the punishment - without the punitive measure, this is a slap on the wrist.

I wonder what they would've done had they, for example, yelled "whore" and "slut" during a feminist play, or various ethnic slurs during an African-American play? Would she have just said, "well, we can't figure out who did it, and the students clammed up, so I guess we'll just recommend a 'dialogue'."

Now I attended Ole Miss a number of years ago, so I might be a little prejudiced. But isn't a gibbons a monkey? Why would you put a monkey in a play about a homosexual?gallery.photo.net

If you want to have fun with this concept, go to old miss and open up Grindr on your phone. For a "Christian, Anti-Homosexual" campus, it's got a LOT of hits.

I think that what most people are missing is that Ole Miss actually STAGED this play and preformed it on campus...

The fact that there were homophobic idiots isn't in the least bit surprising.

The fact that they evidently had multiple shows that were NOT interrupted by homophobic idiots is rather a nice statement for Mississippi.

Just because he was killed in a lover's spat by his boyfriend over drug deals gone bad, is no reason to value his life any less than that of a person who wasn't a drug dealer.

Except for the fact that this has been a conspiracy theory promoted by people since the time of his death with no evidence of his involvement in anything involving drugs at the time of his death being found by either the Feds or the locals, and the Jiminez book which gives new light to the claim references far too many "anonymous sources" to be credible in the least.

His own killer has stated repeatedly that this had nothing to do with drugs, and he was not in a relationship with Shepard.
