The hardest game to predict is Cardiff/Newcastle. Most of the rest look pretty straightforward, but a lot of factors going into it. I think Cardiff will edge the Magpies, but just barely. Going to be a good game.

It is your FFPL report!

This report contains strong images of non-consensual sex and self-harm. Parental discretion is advised.

Last week, not one single player scored negative points. With both Manchester teams losing this week, a full quarter of the league took wounds ranging from a 'light splintering' to 'unwanted sexual attention from a donkey'. A -40 or -50 is usually enough to call attention to yourself, but this week the bar is much lower. Cameroncrazy1984 lodged a noteworthy -60 WITH a successful banker. Twins of shame dietbubba and Thunderchild gaped to -65's, incorporating -30s from MUFC Vs WBA that were so de rigueur this round. Scouserduck has people whispering behind his back, having recorded a seasons worst -70. In fact, lets give that score the debit it deserves. MINUS SEVENTY.

Eeyore!

A small number of hipsters decided negative scores were too mainstream for them. Stimied_in_a_Rut dragged in 100, just behind tom_servo_bit_me on 105. Top scorer of the round, and sprinting into first place we have wynswrld who brought in 130. With the only intact Max Banker left, wynswrld has the chance to increase his 100 point advantage over second and third placed nathanjr and Langston - or will the pressure tell?

Wherewolf and Darkwym operationalized WOPR strategy through not submitting predictions. 0 this week was a decent score. I distinguish between their 0s and Princips_Sandwich's zen.

The Bankers were massacred this week [if only]. Wynswrld takes the Presidency of the BB Club, which has very few members left now, with themanofpa, tom_servo_bit_me, Adubs86, chupacabra_sandwich and sachbash on 10s.

Tom_servo_bit_me gets his third mention of the week as highest climber, rising 12 places whilst Thunderchild drops 12. Norfolkingchance heads the top of Page 2, whilst Gonz_Hotspur clings onto the bottom of Page 1 by tiebreak.

Two of the top three are Arsenal. Two of the bottom three are Spurs. Most MUFC are on Page 2, but ¾ of NUFC are on Page 1.

Well last week was brutal. I take comfort in the fact it can't get any worse. Right?

City v Everton first up and dodgy keeper is still in place. Could be a close one

Theoretical minima is -120 from a 10 match round. That requires no insurance in play though.

2013-10-05 08:06:08 AM
I do find the hilarity that Chelsea have wasted so much money on strikers, yet the two most in form strikers in the league in the last year have both been former and loaned Chelsea strikers. Why on earth they let Lukaku go on loan and why they insisted on trying to play Sturridge on the wing, I do not know.

Unlucky for Timmy, had he not done that stutter step he might have gotten more of a jump on that penalty to get a better hand on it.

Hmmm, mixed feelings. I always want to see an Everton comeback and City to collapse...but if it stays this way, I can at least get a GD result in the FFPL

The MIGHTY ones take on Southend United this week and ideally need a win to stay in the automatic promotion places

That peno was pathetic.

In other news I am quite hungover and attending a beer festival later today so I will probably be hung over tomorrow as well.  I also may have accidentally used the women's room last night while really drunk.  No ladies were in the room at that time.

I found the matches really difficult to predict this week.  The 3-1 to City gives me 10 points.  Was I crazy to put my banker on United again?

Well it might well have been, I only caught about a 1 second look at it, but it was very much that Marxist style, with various black and white heads on a red banner, all looking at a red star.

Suarez looks dangerous every time he's near the ball, even if he's chasing it.

On a side note, I'm in a side predictor league with my friend and he put his banker on a 1-1 tie between Hull City and Aston Villa. Very ballsy move, putting your banker on a draw.

heh. i have the original on my work pc.

You know, I don't know if I've ever seen it...hmm...

i've been saving it for the derby. right after he took the job, rm got tricked into posing with three reds at a wedding, with each of them giving the "five times" sign.

Did he remind them that Everton has finished above Liverpool for the last 2 seasons?

He wasn't their manager then. In my book, he can't play that card.

Moyes can, but RM can't.

And Zaha still can't even get on the bench. I'm beginning to think he must have backed over Moyes' dog in the players' car park.

Still, other than the routinely disappointing Nani, this is a more adventurous selection by Moyes.

From the BBC:

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway on Liverpool's disputed penalty: "I've just seen it and I'm bemused. Was it outside the box and was it really a foul? If you want to compare it to anything, Jimmy Kebe is pulled much worse by Mamadou Sakho at the other end. If one is a penalty and one isn't I don't understand."

Nani has to hit the target on that, come on

2013-10-05 12:52:53 PM
Nani annoys me. When he gets the ball, the entire attack grinds to a halt while he does a bunch of stepovers in front of a defender who waits patiently for him to actually move. At some point he has to realize he isn't Ronaldo.

And then, of course, he will do something unexpected that creates just enough expectation to keep him in the lineup.

I can't help but think that at some point, they're due to paste some unwitting team with 5 or 6 goals. Every week I think it'll be the team they're facing. Then they come out and play like this. It's baffling.

Langston: In all fairness to United, though, Sunderland is defending exceptionally well so far.

At this stage, every team on United's schedule might be getting a little extra pumped for the game. It's not 'well, we're going to give up three points here, oh well' like it typically is for the lower-level clubs. Right now it's 'they're weak, quick, hit them with all we've got before they figure out whatever it is that's wrong with them'.

It's a downward spiral for United. Every small-club loss is going to invite more questions, which makes them play more desperately and sloppily. There's no excuse for the clownshoes goal that their defense conceded this match.

I think you have them in order.

I said last season that Man Utd wasn't has good as their record showed. They just didn't look good, but they still looked better than the other EPL teams.

Now, with essentially the same team but a different manager; they look worse. To me, these first few games of the "post-Fergie" era says a lot more about SAF than anything else. He was able to make his players better and could hide defects in the team. Moyes doesn't have that ability. He's a fine manager, but he can't make players better just by his presence.

Still don't get why the hell they needed a 1999 MU performance, but I'll take it. Ancelotti should really give Morata a chance at a starting spot. Benzema's very volatile.

I think it's possible you are reading too much in these first two months of the season.  Replacing Fergie was always going to huge endeavor even with all the steps taken to minimize the disruption.  That disruption was always going to unsettle some of the players and even some of the management which was going to show on the field.  They will work their way through it and I'm sure they'll be fine.

What really surprises me, particularly after what we saw during the transfer window, is how people expected things to just continue as they had under SAF between the lines.  It was always going to take time.

Time will tell with Moyes, who I, as an Everton supporter, rate very highly.  I think that as he establishes himself his talent for man management will show through.  The biggest problem he will face is in learning the European game, which he has some experience in, and learning how to spend money.  He will always have the shadow of SAF hanging over him, though, but he knew that going in.

I know that as a Liverpool supporter, it must be tempting to quickly dismiss a Manchester United Team with a former Everton boss as manager.  But would suggest you keep your powder dry until things shake out.

Germany vs Ireland next Friday. What could possibly go wrong? We lost 1-6 at home (the fark is with my teams losing 1-6 at home?) and that was with a defensive manager. A year later we fired him and replaced him (temporarily) with the U21 coach, and I have no idea how good or bad he is. O' Shea and Dunne are suspended, meaning the central defensive partnership will be ... who knows, maybe Ciaran Clark and Darren O' Dea. Something like that.

Guus Hiddink is the latest to be linked with the permanent job. I still want Rene Meulensteen. There'll be 24 teams at Euro 2016, so Ireland should be in with a chance of getting there.

/I sort of have a rant in my head about Moyes and stuff, but I don't know where to begin writing it down. You may or may not have that to look forward to in the morning :-)

Some days it's better to be lucky than good. Other days, the ref just doesn't care to call consistent fouls. 4-0 Rapids.

At this point, I'm expecting two red cards against the Sounders.

I'm still watching the Sounders. There have been close shots...and Johnson finds the net. 4-1 rapids

SomebodyElsesShoes: I think it's possible you are reading too much in these first two months of the season.

Despite being a Liverpool supporter, I do like and respect David Moyes. He did quite a bit with not that much at Everton. Seriously, my only two problems with him are:

1) He managed Everton
2) He manages Man Utd

And there's probably a fair number of Liverpool supporters who feel the same way about him.

There was an interview I saw last night that Gary Neville did back in August at some TV conference (video starts where he starts on his career, talk on SAF comes about the 11 minute mark). He was asked about SAF and he said essentially what I did. And for as good as Moyes is, he's not able to summon that drive the same way SAF was able to. Maybe that has to do more with the players than Moyes himself. Maybe he can get that out of a kid like Januzaj who never had a game under SAF, but can you expect the same thing out of Rooney or Ferdinand when all they've known up to May was Ferguson? I don't think so.

Maybe I am reading too much into it and things will change as the season progresses. But I just can't see that happening with these players. Moyes should get a chance to make the team into what he prefers, but I can't see that happening in January alone. It's going to take more than a bit of time for that to happen.

Sounders lose 5-1 to Rapids. Finding out that the Rapids area coming off a bye and the sounders are missing 5 at the start and it's no wonder they lost. That ref was a joke, handing a red to Scott when neither player that hit Rosales in the head got carded. Everything went against the Sounders and their next match is the Whitecaps at the C-link on Wednesday. Fun times.

I have no idea if I can get up for the EPL matches tomorrow morning. I have no idea what happened today in the league outside of Sunderland losing to Man-utd.

Just watched NBCSN's Match of the Day and... well, there were a couple of bad penalties given out today; that's for damn sure. I think Gerrard knew it was a incorrect penalty call and that's why he didn't celebrate his goal.

Depends what the ranking criteria are. Moneywise it isn't close, but then the EPL hulk-smashes impoverished leagues like Spain and Italy.

I think the MLS could make a claim to parity with the SPL, and I'm not being sarky. Certainly it has a brighter future than the SPL.

'Quality' wise? Perhaps League 1 [third-tier English League].

Quality isn't available artificially. Can't force it or buy it - see Emirates/China. Culture and other support needs to grow organically. The Big Leap Forward will be when supporting dads take their kids. Remember, we've been doing this on a formalised league basis since the Battle of Gettysburg.

The real, honest answer is that it's more like baseball where the English Premier League is like the MLB and the MLS is like AAA baseball.  Comparing it to football doesn't make sense because even the worst NFL team is light years better than the best college team.  A AAA baseball team could win a game against an MLB team, but it's quite unlikely.  An NFL team would just paste any college team without much effort.

I don't think I ever called for his head, but after a long summer with a huge kitty and only two free transfers to show for it, and after an embarrassing season opener to Aston Villa, I was really frustrated. I think a lot of us agreed that Wenger is a great coach, but not great at player acquisitions/transfers. I still believe that, btw, despite Arsenal's current great form.

They have this, though the academies are fraught with funding issues. And they have rules protecting club investments in youth players (right of first refusal, i think), which sometimes screw the players over.

I think the key difference between the good and the great players is the degree to which they can do things consistently. You'll see moments of brilliance in a Sunday league game, but it will be the 1:100 time it went right. As you move up the league what happens is what was meant to happen more often.

What a miss by Anelka.
And another by Wilshere.
We've been taking lessons at the 2011-2012 Liverpool School of Finishing have we?

2013-10-06 12:12:39 PM
Please god don't let this game go 0-0.

2013-10-06 12:20:05 PM
Whoever had the temerity to bank on Arsenal, all I have to say is: it's Arsenal. Why would you bank on them?

2013-10-06 12:22:20 PM
CAP'N JACK!

WILSHERE

Unlucky for Olsson to get that deflection.

2013-10-06 12:25:25 PM
Spurs give up a goal on a corner, sigh. Now have 25 minutes to respond.

Princip's Sandwich: Whoever had the temerity to bank on Arsenal, all I have to say is: it's Arsenal. Why would you bank on them?

Back when you could put your insurance on a banker I did it a couple times, but not now.

Goddammit.

Sad, West Ham score 2 on extremely lucky deflections. Poor defending, but geez those deflections were luckky.

2013-10-06 12:33:17 PM
Arsenal should be down 3-1

2013-10-06 12:33:48 PM
West Ham have now dropped TWO goals on Spurs. I'm dropping points in FFPL, but honestly don't mind a bit.

Just need another goal from the Gunners for a happy morning.

2013-10-06 12:33:51 PM
Our sole Hammer has predicted a Spurs win.

This WBA Arsenal game is wide open.  Somebody must score here.

2013-10-06 12:35:30 PM
Kind of hoping for West Brom to score.

Arsenal playing undisciplined, capriciously.

Wow

Okay so, who predicted a West Ham blowout?

Ozil to Bendtner heroics oncoming?!?!

2013-10-06 12:44:20 PM
Bendtner?! We're farked

2013-10-06 12:44:28 PM
Bendtner will probably get a hat trick in the next five minutes.

2013-10-06 12:44:52 PM
Best. Striker. In the World.

2013-10-06 12:45:37 PM

Princip's Sandwich: Okay so, who predicted a West Ham blowout?

Nobody. I predicted a narrow 1-0 victory for Tottenham because I thought they might have trouble finding attacking space if West Ham parked the bus. But I wasn't expecting this.

2013-10-06 12:46:27 PM
So I get a perfect banker from Chelsea, but lose points from Swans, Spurs, and Gunners. Eh, can't win them all.

ADubs86: So I get a perfect banker from Chelsea, but lose points from Swans, Spurs, and Gunners. Eh, can't win them all.

Got points from Chelsea, insured Swans, and botched the rest. -10 for the day, +110 for the week.

2013-10-06 12:50:00 PM
Wenger time?

Yeah, I bet you're buzzing, Andy!

I wonder how many Spurs bankers were placed. I'd expect a few.

2013-10-06 12:54:14 PM
Arsenal on top by goals scored by 3.

2013-10-06 12:54:39 PM
Hats off to West Ham, they had their tactics perfect and executed them flawlessly.  They deserved the points.

2013-10-06 12:55:39 PM
10 points on the day, +100 for the week.  Not bad

Not bad at all.

While not team specific, i do have to give props to NBC for their coverage of the Prem. The difference between Fox Soccer and NBC's coverage is night and day IMO.

Enjoyable game. A draw was fair.

Deserved worse so I'm happy with the draw. WBA clearly came to play today

I think both teams could say they had opportunities to win, so the points being shared is probably about right.

2013-10-06 01:08:47 PM
Bad week for FFPL.  Pretty good one for the Liverpool with 3 points and rivals for 4th dropping points.

Net result, I get to go into the international break with a smile!

689908: Enjoyable game. A draw was fair.

As much as I hate to admit it, it was. Arsenal could have netted one, West Brom had several chances, but they played very well and absolutely earned that point.

It's a shame we don't have more Serie A fans about.

I'm working on a wall of text when I should be watching Ander Herrera, who United won't buy in January.

2013-10-06 03:44:26 PM
I spent ages writing stuff about Moyes, United's squad and style. Then I erased most of it. Leaving this:

Firstly, if the real problem at United (the Glazers) received half as much abuse and derision as Moyes, the world would be a better place.

Moyes needs time. It's been 10 games so far.

Whether United are fighting to finish 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, or 17th in the Premier League or midtable in the Championship, who gives a f*ck? Apart from everybody.

Manchester United is, and always will be, the greatest club in the world.

2013-10-06 03:46:09 PM
I wanted to get that out of my system, to feel better after I wrote it. I really don't. Pity the poor farkers who have to read it.

2013-10-06 04:22:00 PM
Welp, Juventus won this one. Dammit Milan, why'd you have to turn to shiat?

Man, you change the name United to another team here and the gloom is identical. Strange to hear it from a United fan, to be honest.

It's not just Moyes, its Joel, Pardew and others are being talked about being under pressure. Madness at only ten games in.

Get used to it. You'll be hearing lots more :-)

Very true.

Stimied in a Rut: Also I just want to state again how happy I am with NBC.  Their coverage is wonderful and everything about the streaming is great.  The stats on the side and the quality of the stream are just amazing.  I find myself wishing they had the rights to all european soccer.

I wish they had a nightly news show like FSC had.  Or if they do, I have missed it completely.

Langston: midpoint: Are any of these incorrect wrt these threads?

We have no Southampton fans.
We have no Mackem fans*.
We have no Man City fans.

* I'm sure there is one- can't bring the name to mind.

I've seen a few Man City fans. I remember ukexpat was one, and so was eagles95. A few more, but names getting at from me this morning.

I'm a long-suffering Manchester City fan, but rarely post on match days.
