I actually like the close up comparison. It puts things a bit in perspective, especially when you realize  China's population density vs Africa's. As well as India's.

um yes we do subby, because this map is greened at least once a year:

Africa is BIG. The U.S. not so much, Europe is small, Japan tinier yet. This explains much Sun April 22, 2012

Africa is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean you may think it's a long walk down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Africa Wed October 20, 2010

Because I am a small minded asshole, I think what bugs me is when some douchebag blogger journalist learns something new, something he or she could use to understand how ignorant or arrogant they are, and then instead of writing about what a bunch of silly people they've been, they project their stupidity onto the rest of society, often these days with a supercilious import of social justice.

Holy shiatballs. I've ignored Google Earth and physical globes all these years and just now realize how big Africa is. What the fark was wrong with me?

So what. Maybe it did go green three years ago but I didn't see it then and I bet there are plenty of others on fark who weren't here in 2010 so they didn't see it either. I don't know why you're being so whiny about this. Is it hurting you somehow to have it posted again?

It's a useful graphic. Yes, a LOT of folks have realized that Africa is frippin' huge, but this is a way to present such a thing in a way that is useful in a way that is relevant to some conversations, and thus, has a purpose. Yup, you can use Google Earth, but this is a graphic that zeroes in the comparisons. I think it's less than "blogger realizes Africa is HUGE" than "blogger discovers useful graphic and shares."

This.  I thought, "Wow, that's a lot of area," and then I realized, "Wait, that's a continent, so of course it's big," and then realized that it's not all that much bigger than North America, and then I settled down.

Why not just post the links to the actual articles, instead of making use read half a paragraph of crap, with the actual link somewhere in it?

Is this the thread where I can get a ruling from cartography nerds on the best projection? I'm thinking of trying to buy a huge print to hang over my couch. I like the looks of the butterfly projection aesthetically, either the Waterman version or the original version, but I want to make sure the projection I go for has the best accuracy as far as both scale of landmasses and distortion on landmasses.
