The only place to get accurate weather reporting in Alaska, a state in which its citizens collectively own and are paid for their share in its extracted resources, is the federal government? This is an outrage.

They still show up because unlike members of Congress most of the people at the NWS have integrity and care of about the people the are (normally) paid to protect.

But also they show up because, just like every other government shutdown, those that weren't furloughed get back-pay, but unlike Congress they just don't know how long it will be before they get the money owed them.

2013-10-04 10:15:11 PM
I worked in the communications division for a PD in a mid-sized college town in the midwest back in the '90s, and loved to see the forecast discussion come across the printer, no matter whether there was anything going on or not weather wise, simply because it seemed that the forecaster that worked the evening shift was about as bored as I was and made a habit of inserting witty stuff somewhere mid text. Stuff like "nobody is really going to read this, but I'll explain why it will be calm with a low in the 70's tonight", or "if for some reason you look outside and see the blizzard raging and think it would be a good time to go for a drive, it isn't, so don't"

It seems the NWS has some people with a sense of humor, and I'm good with that, because they're also very good at what they do.

The NWS is an outdated institution anyways. Now that Obama can control the weather with HAARP, we have no need for weather forecasters. Obama will either tell us what he's going to make happen, or he won't. He smote Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota pretty good with some tornadoes and a blizzard today. Obviously it was revenge against red states just because the public is turning against him for shutting down the government.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: mod3072: The NWS is an outdated institution anyways.

There's a cold front coming straight outta Compton.

capt.hollister: Only mildly impressed for reasons that should not be obscure on Fark.

Ooh,acrostic messages are cool beans. Nice one, AWS.

Particularly liked the way they said please there.

Polite hostage is polite.

The only problem with the effective protests that will actually get Republicans' attention is that they'll hurt "innocents"...but I think we're quickly getting to the point where innocents will be hurt no matter what we do. And I have a rule: Whenever a situation leads to a Morton's fork with an outcome, that outcome can be ignored in future situations.  To clarify: If you have a bus full of schoolkids on track A and a bus full of nuns on track B and you have a train coming, "someone's gonna die" should not factor into your decision of which track the train's gonna barrel down.  If there were a third option that would save every life, it should be heard, and anyone who is preventing it from being heard (read: Tea Party members blocking clean CR) are the ones at fault.

This was done by a Farker... He mentioned it earlier this week.

cretinbob: I have few regrets in life but not having gone to school so I could work for NOAA is one

My Dad worked for NOAA from its inception until his retirement. I'm pretty damn proud of that. Down in South Florida, under National Marine Fisheries Service. I still get a lump in my throat when I see the NOAA logo on weather maps.

I think the NWS should go on a reduced schedule and skeleton crew. Put out a four day forecast twice a week, or something like that. If something major develops during the off days, oh well, should have fully funded them.

Did they blink out the message in morse code?

Well we all know that government employees are the cream of the crop. With their "can do" attitudes, and dedication to adding value developed through years of public service, I'm sure their employment prospects in the private sector will be...will be...hee hee, ha ha, HA HA HA!

I'm sorry, I couldn't even get through that. Government employee resumes always go to the bottom of the stack. Bless their hearts.

You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

Fire them and the IRS agents that politicize their bureaucratic jobs.

What would they do, fire them? Sue for wrongful termination. Seems like if you're not getting paid, you'd have a pretty good case.

/Why isn't this considered essential?

it is, but... isn't?
there was a local news story about the guys at the Wakefield station soldering on. It's one of those, We'll pay you when we get around to not farking around jobs.

[www.redvue.co.uk image 677x400] Too much tin....

I'd say that's the wrong tip and being applied to the wrong place.  Don't blame the solder.

Needs a bent conical tip, applied to the joint between the lead and pad.

PsiChick: Neeek: Doc Daneeka: Fark that. If I wasn't getting paid, I wouldn't write hidden messages - I just wouldn't show up for work. If all these NWS workers were just no shows on the job, that would send a much stronger message.

I imagine they consider their job to be a necessity for the continued safety of a number of people. The comments on this thread suggest they aren't wrong.

/If not doing my job meant people who didn't do anything wrong would likely die, I hope I'd show up whether or not I was paid.

Yeah...me too.

/Why isn't this considered essential?

It is considered essential.  That's why they're still working, and not furloughed.  They're just not getting paid for the work.

If your boss tells you "I'm not going to pay you" and you go to work anyway, I find it hard to be sympathetic.

It sucks that the governement won't do it's job, but working for free doesn't solve that problem.  Stay home, spend some time with friends and family.

The more work you do for free, the less pressure the politicians will be under to fix the problem.

Actually, it is illegal to do work when on furlough. If they went to their jobs, they were probably ORDERED to. This being government, do you really think the laws apply the same way?

It is.  Which is why they're still expected to go to work while not getting paid.

buzzcut73: I worked in the communications division for a PD in a mid-sized college town in the midwest back in the '90s, and loved to see the forecast discussion come across the printer, no matter whether there was anything going on or not weather wise, simply because it seemed that the forecaster that worked the evening shift was about as bored as I was and made a habit of inserting witty stuff somewhere mid text. Stuff like "nobody is really going to read this, but I'll explain why it will be calm with a low in the 70's tonight", or "if for some reason you look outside and see the blizzard raging and think it would be a good time to go for a drive, it isn't, so don't"

Reminds me of the Tulsa NOAA weather radio station.  "This is KIH27, NOAA Weather Radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The voice of the National Weather Service.  I'm Chance Storm."
