I wonder if the person who reads these petitions is on furlough.

Obama and the Senate and Harry Reid had the chance to keep NIH open and rejected it. I'm sure if you asked Senator Reid about your friend he'd say "If I don't care about a little boy with cancer why would I care about her?"

Does it look to you like Obama cares about cancer?

kiwimoogle84: feckingmorons: I just wrote both my Senators asking them to at least fund the NIH.

I don't really care if the parks are closed or the Commerce department has to work with 1/7th the staff, but the NIH is too important to play political games.

Thank you. It's EXTREMELY important. It's like shutting down all the power in a city and us having to petition to get power to the hospitals.

If it were only that easy, I'd be out there riding the stationary bike hooked up to the little generator with thousands of others to power that hospital. There is no way we can fund the NIH ourselves, they aren't allowed to go back to work even as volunteers if they wanted to.

Our elected leaders are dicks. All of them.

Is there any way you could get a major news source to cover this? Major negative public opinion for damaging the care of a cancer patient is probably more of a language that politicians understand than a petition with a few hundred signatures.

Shaggydum80: Not to sound cynical, but is a petition going to do anything to convince a group of assholes that shut down government in the first place because they didn't want to give people government funded healthcare?

No.  It's not.  But it will make all involved in the petition feel like they at least tried, rather than watching their friend die alone because of a fight over healthcare (the irony, it burns).  And that's good enough motivation even for cynical old me.

On a petition like this trying is costless, but the potential upside is huge.

While I doubt it will have any impact, I signed it.
