Do you think any of those assholes actually give a shiat about anyone other than their donors?

That's adorable.

I know they do. I signed it.

I'm sorry for your friend.

Not to sound cynical, but is a petition going to do anything to convince a group of assholes that shut down government in the first place because they didn't want to give people government funded healthcare?

2013-10-04 05:32:42 PM
While I doubt it will have any impact, I signed it.

No.  It's not.  But it will make all involved in the petition feel like they at least tried, rather than watching their friend die alone because of a fight over healthcare (the irony, it burns).  And that's good enough motivation even for cynical old me.

On a petition like this trying is costless, but the potential upside is huge.

You should email this to your Congressman.

My best to your friend.

Sorry, the Office of White House Petition Readers is on furlough.

Is there any way you could get a major news source to cover this? Major negative public opinion for damaging the care of a cancer patient is probably more of a language that politicians understand than a petition with a few hundred signatures.

Done.

Luck to your friend.

2013-10-04 05:41:15 PM
I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. Hopefully she's white and your local news picks up this story, but a petition won't change the situation in Congress.

Clinical trials do not assure life saving measures.

/sorry about your friend though
//just as angry about this BS as you are.

I'll sign the petition but the assholes in charge couldn't care less about your friend unless her last name is Walton or Koch.

2013-10-04 05:43:30 PM
Actually, she had an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN on Monday I believe. I've been following her cancer and babysat her daughter a couple times, they're SUCH good people. Will this get her treatment? Possibly not, but her whole family is pretty sick with grief.

Obviously subby.

They're covering it.  I might contact any one of the following reporters who have already done NIH stories, to see if they want to put a face to the story:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/shutdown-seque st ration-cuts-zap-scientists-and-researchers/2013/10/02/bdfb0896-2ab6-11 e3-b139-029811dbb57f_story.html

There are lots more.  Just do a Google News search for NIH shutdown.

This is why this situation is so desperately sad.

But where there is life there is hope.  At least that little kid will grow up knowing her mom tried everything in her power to live.

Hey Mods, can this go green?  It's like Warthog said; the cost is minimal but there is potential upside.  Plus, it's good to get the word out as to what the govt. is shutting down.  We think of parks and some of the other things in the news, but how many people thought about clinical trials (with medicine schedules) being postponed?

She is an autism occupational therapist, too. Such a good human being. And yes, having cute kids make sad eyes helps, but it pisses us off to no end that some congresswoman can biatch about needing her paycheck and others are mad about memorials, but they don't give a rats ass about the average American.

I just wrote both my Senators asking them to at least fund the NIH.

I don't really care if the parks are closed or the Commerce department has to work with 1/7th the staff, but the NIH is too important to play political games.

Thank you. It's EXTREMELY important. It's like shutting down all the power in a city and us having to petition to get power to the hospitals.

If it does nothing else, it'll create a record of how many people think this is unfair, and feel strongly enough about that opinion to put their name to something that's theoretically capable of changing it. And if it gets enough signatures in a short duration, the news media takes notice of petitions that grow quickly even if their intended recipients don't.

And yeah, your friend is young, white, female, and cute as all fark. None of which should be advantages, but we don't live in a perfect world, so that'll all help her get noticed.

If it were only that easy, I'd be out there riding the stationary bike hooked up to the little generator with thousands of others to power that hospital. There is no way we can fund the NIH ourselves, they aren't allowed to go back to work even as volunteers if they wanted to.

Our elected leaders are dicks. All of them.

Obama and the Senate and Harry Reid had the chance to keep NIH open and rejected it. I'm sure if you asked Senator Reid about your friend he'd say "If I don't care about a little boy with cancer why would I care about her?"

2013-10-05 10:05:15 AM
In my opinion when there is a disagreement between two parties or individuals it isn't the fault of the one that is willing to compromise on some parts.  It's the fault of the one who insists on all or nothing.

Besides Obamacare as it stands is a slippery slope (and I hate slippery slope arguments) because it is the first time that a law will be passed in which the government absolutely requires that somebody buy something or be fined.

I do feel bad for your friend but honestly no petitions even if signed by half the population of the country would make a bit of difference.  Politicians only care about their income, their pension, and their ego.   And it's the ego part that is causing this impasse.
