(International Business Times)   After his NRA-sponsored hunting show was cancelled following outcry over an episode where he kills an elephant, the show's host decides to make himself permanently unemployable by saying those who were critical of the hunt were just like Hitler   (ibtimes.com) divider line 106

As Makris tells it, the argument that it's okay to hunt some animals -- deer and rabbits, for instance -- but not others is nothing more than a "very unique form of animal racism."

What an idiot.

Seriously, take his argument to it's logical conclusion and hunting deer would be no different than huntin human beings and- oh, crap, has anyone checked to see if he has a private island and a cage ful of shipwrecked sailors stashed somewhere?

My grocery store charges more for wild Chinook salmon than for chicken thighs.  It amazes me that in 2013, we still can't look past animal race and treat them all equally.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, guy! There are only so many spots on the Fox & Friends couch, and if you think you'll be allowed to possibly block a shot of News Blonde Model #476583's legs, you're more foolish than first imagined.

This guy is not a hunter; he's an asshole with a gun. Coming from a family of hunters, anything beyond killing game in your local geographic region for food is immoral. If you feel the need to kill something on another continent, you're a sociopath.

This reminds me of the teenagers in my high school that would video-tape themselves "hunting". And by "hunting" I mean "shooting animals in the head". That's not hunting. Especially since they would just leave the carcasses where they fell. That's just killing for the sake of killing. It's to be expected, though. Humans suck.

Control of invasive species is another legitimate motivation for hunting.

Yopu don't want to do that with hunting as a subject, because that puts the hunters' conduct towards their prey on the same table.

Guys like this are why my rock-ribbed Republican dad resinged his life membership in the NRA back in the 80's.  He owns many guns and taught me to shoot starting at age 8 (using NRA safety materials aimed at kids to teach me gun safety first I might add)   but when they started morphing from a collection of responsible, rational sportsmen who modeled the best practices for gun wonership, safety and hunting ettitquette  and started becoming an nigh-psychpathic organization devoted to cranking up the rhetoric and scooping up fundraising cash from the gullible, Dad had enough and demanded they stop sending him letters or contact him in any way.  I think the final straw wa Lapierre comparing ATF agents to Nazi storm troopers (the same thing that made Geprge Bush Sr AS PRESIDENT resign his membership too)

THIS.

I hunt and I own guns, but the idea of going to the other side of the world to kill an elephant, for the hell of it, is revolting.

Marcus Aurelius: Does this mean I can shoot his dogs and he'll have no hard feelings?

That's absolutely different, he'll tell you.

But it's absolutely essential that all wildlife from Aardvarks to Wolves be managed the same way, including elephants, which live for up to 60 to 70 years in closely knit societies, for which the technical term used by ethologists is "families". But to avoid being Hitler, the way to manage them is by letting sport hunters pick out ones they want to shoot at random from whichever they encounter.

This guy is crazy! I was at my friends home in NC.  I went into her fathers den and was stunned. This guy had a hippo head in his mounted on the wall, bear skin carpets, and many other exotic animals hanging from the walls. The guy owned a local company and apparently traveled the world hunting animals.

I agree with Rude Turnip "If you feel the need to kill something on another continent, you're a sociopath".

2013-10-04 01:43:40 PM
If he was hunting deer or rabbit for the sole purpose of killing them so you can have a mount and a story then he would be just as big of an ahole. What do they do with the dead elephant?

I hunt but I eat what I kill and would never consider shooting an animal for a trophy.

I don't think very highly of big game hunting or those staged hunts we have here in the US wherein you have some exotic animals fenced and you just kkind of find one and shoot it down.

There is an interesting phenomenon that "wildlife managers" discovered only by accident after letting hunter take the "surplus" Male elephants in a game park in south Africa.   It seems that they suddenly had a problem with hyper violent adolescent male elephants,  elephants that would attack each other, and other wildlife like hippos, rhinos,  even cape buffalo for no reason at the drop of a hat.  This was of course resulting in severe injuries to both the elephants and the things they attacked.  then They discovered the places where this WASN'T happening was where there was a greater number of older adult Bull Elephants, even non-breeding ones.  It seems when the young males got a little crazy, the old bulls cold basically stare hem down while emmitting a calming pheremones that leveled the youngs ones out and made them more peaceful.

More than one scientist has wondered if there is any application of this phenomenon to humans and whether it might explain  the increase in violence among populations of young men who grow up without a strong male role model in thier lives.

I don't think there are any left alive in the wild so if he claims he shot one then he's on acid.

No, you're thinking of the black rhinoceros. I'm sure the Congo has a couple hundred elephants left.  And maybe a few in India, too...

Also elephants don't really have much fear because they're used to being bigger than everything and they're not hard to find because again, bigger than a 15 passenger van.  Once you actually get to their general area hunting an elephant is about as challenging as shooting domestic cattle in a farmer's field.

Deer and rabbits are edible.  I'm sure elephant is technically edible, but this guy didn't shoot it because he was hungry.

You know, this isn't some random idiot on safari who happened to be an NRA member.  This is someone the NRA specifically chose to be their public face of big game hunting.

Think about that.
