The Old Boys Lodge is burning.

I heard the clip on WIP in Philadelphia, their sister station. Angelo Cataldi ripped the Boston guys a new one and the other radio personalities in the room disagreed - they said that the hosts should have built up Pitino for a few minutes, then given him a chance to speak for 1 second, THEN said "You suck, you ruined the Celtics" then hung up.

No showmanship anymore, I tells ya.

These hosts aren't helping the "no really, people from Boston aren't dicks" argument.  Then again, it is radio.

seems a little PR stunty to me, but it was funny enough.
Later in the day a Louisville fan called another show to say it was classless and the Celtics were already ruined, citing the 15-win season - the same season the C's tanked in order to get Tim Duncan (but subsequently getting Chauncey Billups and Ron Mercer).  It was silly all around.

Heard that live yesterday and cracked up.

If they could have worked in some "sex in the bathroom" smack it would have only made it better.

Fred Toucher is my new hero!  I doubt if Bobby Valentine will be available for the sequel.

neither Fred or Rich are from Boston, they just happen to work here now.

Their show is great.  Also, Fred's interview of Incubus is great stuff as well.

/Jon Wallach is a HWS grad, wooooooooo!

Well, they're not from Boston. Fred is from Detroit. Rich is from the south somewhere (Dallas?). John Wallach is a local product but he wasn't in on it. Only Fred and the producer knew what was going to happen and it was decided literally a minute before it happened.

They're still the best radio in the morning around here.

/Fark Rick Pitino.

They may not be from New England, but just breathing the air makes you turn into an asshole. I was 18 months in New Haven and by the end of it I was honking my car horn like a madman and inventing new swear words to call people who disagreed with me.

They both had long stints in Atlanta, you can have them.

They aren't from Boston they are just dicks and do anything to attention whore themselves, these were the same guys who held up the sign during the women's protest at the Masters.

Still have no idea how they are still on the air, they are horrible and know nothing about sports.

After working in Concord for 2 years its not that they are the best, its that Boston radio sucks that bad. Its easy to shine when you're just the piss in the middle of shiat.

I can't hate on Pitino because of his tenure with the Friars and all the good he did there but I'd be lying if I said that didn't crack me the fark up when I heard that live.

I can understanmd the hate - he was the most arrogant man in the history of the organization - which is saying something when they Auerbach and Heinson and Bird, among others.
But the guy had great success in Kentucky and tried to apply it to the NBA and it didn't work.  Isn't a college coach's success in a professional league more an exception than a rule?  At the time it didn't seem like the worst idea in the world to young me.  But retrospectively, there couldn't have been a worse league at a worse time to try and get guys to work hard and listen to their coach  (bonus, Antoine Walker on his roster).  It also didn't help that Pitino was impatient and desperate for an athletic center and missed on every single one of them, and traded away Billups and Mercer and replaced them with the Kenny Andersons of the world.
If Pitino changed his approach, somehow kept Billups and talked some sense into Walker to keep him the 20-10 middle-inside guy he was, then drafted Paul Pierce - that team has long term damage potential and we're not having this thread.

From a purely Celtics fan standpoint I get all that but any Friar fan should still have fond memories of Pitino & Billy the Kid in the Final Four.

Yeah, pretty much so.  Two completely different types of play, in every sport.

It's hard to motivate players who are going to be paid millions if they play good or not.

I mean, to be fair, Petino did fark the C's up during his tenure so I can understand why people in Boston couldn't care less about this.

Because money. More people listen to them in Boston than any other station in the morning.

As a Kentucky fan that knows what Pitino did to restore the UK program I laughed when I read this.
Fark you & your book deal.

"Create a contract with yourself." But don't worry about the contracts you actually sign if you need to jet.

I read his first book. Not bad. But as I get older I wonder why so much advice is taken from people that win at sports.

2013-10-05 11:38:50 AM
That was funny and all, but do they expect to get many other guests after this?  What agent or PR person is gonna let their guy go on this show?

2013-10-05 07:54:25 PM
I am a lifelong Celtics fan and saw them play in Detroit when Pitino was coaching. I had seats right behind the Celtics bench and spent the entire game telling him how much he sucked. The Pistons fans around me could not figure out why someone wearing a Larry Bird jersey was ripping on the team's coach.
