So we're just using the word "drone" for any old remote controlled helicopter now huh?

I understand that most news anchors don't know the terminology that they're reporting on, but it is kind of distressing as a RC hobbyist to keep hearing the word drone applied to these multirotors.

Then again, I suppose that their cost point and semi ease of use are going to put these in the category of other things a few idiots ruin for the rest of us.

A remote control helicopter is not a farking drone.

Yes.

It is a toy with a camera.  Get over it.  I have suffered more potential harm from NYC cabbies than a 3 lbs toy.  A predator is a drone, most of Congress are drones, but a FHoD is not a drone.

This.  I guess my grandfather built and flew drones in the 1960s.

You guys have videotape of the taleoff point and you still can't figure it out? It's not hard to look at the buildings, figure out which one it started from and then count what level/balcony it came from.

They are as much drones as any other robot.  Weapons do not a drone make.

Even according to the owners of the Drones-O-Death

A land, sea, or air vehicle that is remotely or automatically controlled. See also remotely piloted vehicle; unmanned aerial vehicle.

Richard Castle and Kate Beckett seen running around trying to find who else used a remote control program to take over a drone and try to kill someone.

Anyone that "lost control over a drone" should turn themselves in to police for reconditioning, get a grip.

What a moron... i've been flying RC aircraft for a long time.  Pretty much every single outing ends in a crash of some kind or another... its just the nature of it.  You have fun until your toy breaks, then you go home and fix it.  Thats the hobby.

There was no way in hell that guy was going to recover that drone once he launched it from his balcony. Literally the only possible outcome was crashing to the streets below.

Throw the book at em.

You sound bad at RC aviation. Have you considered those little RC boats?

2013-10-04 01:08:38 PM
This guy was an idiot. First, it's not a drone. Second, he obviously didn't know how to fly it. Third, the first rule on flying it once you know how, is not to fly it in a congested area.  I have one of these, and practiced for a while before I took it out to take photos with it, and only in places without people around. And if people show up while I'm flying it (because they're fascinated by what I'm doing), I make sure to keep it in the air, and land it someplace else... AWAY FROM THEM.

So, an overpriced, relabeled Walker QR X350 http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__46200__Walkera_QR_X350_GPS_Qua d copter_with_Return_to_Home_Function_and_DEVO_7_Mode_1_RTF_.html with a whole bunch of overpriced accessories. $30 for a Lipo battery you can get from Hobbyking for $11?  $154 for a GPS unit that comes free with the $449 Walker?

To all those folks who are saying "It's an RC helicopter, not a drone", it's a drone.  I own both, and they aren't at all the same

The Phantom is less capable than most kit built quadcopters, but it can fly autonomously, no human at the controls.  Anyone with $500 can build one that's even more capable- I have a basic model that can take off, fly to a set of coordinates, return to home and land without touching more than the start switch.  It's not radio controlled at any point in that flight- it's fully autonomous.

I suppose I could mount some bottle rockets on it if you really require weaponry, but that's not really necessary

Sin_City_Superhero: RC boats?

then every single outing will end with a sinking. and soon the lake bottom will just be RC boats.

2013-10-04 01:56:03 PM
Another Phantom owner here...  I've flown mine in to a lilac bush and chopped limbs off with the rotors.  I have the carbon fiber rotors from DSLRGuys, and I guarantee it could take a finger off at full RPM.  Dumbass owner is a dumbass - quit ruining it for the rest of us.

It's been that way for a long time.

And I own a Phantom so I'm really getting a kick...

As for the "no way in hell that guy was going to recover that drone" comment, that's not true.  The Phantom is the most training-wheeled device I've ever flown.  With all of the assists enabled, someone who's flown it a few hours can land it on a balcony easy.  Or just grab it by the landing gear while it's hovering and cut the power.

Last, the guy who flew it over Manhattan is a farking moron who shouldn't be allowed to have nice things.

I very much enjoyed the quote from the financial analyst who said this guy was pursuing his own entertainment without regard to the well being of others. A NEW YORK FINANCIAL ANALYST, post 2008, says that, and seem prissy about it.

Rich douche with expensively ripped jeans flies $500 toy from his Midtown balcony, and crashes it, scaring a financial analyst but otherwise causing no damage. And they wonder why NYPD didn't really respond to this? I can see the desk sergeant listening to this story.

"Yeah, and was anybody hurt? Any property damage?"
"No, but it could have hurt me, and it's irresponsible to fly these things over Manhattan. Haven't you heard of 9/11?"
"Yeah, OK, pal, we're done here. We'll file the report with the detectives."

It doesn't have to be autonomous to be a drone. Just unmanned. And you're missing the point.
The point is that they intentionally used inflammatory terms to hype up their story.  As I pointed out earlier:

Honest Bender: I guess, "Hobbyist losses control of RC copter" doesn't grab headlines as much as, "Unmanned drone crashes over crowded NY streets!"

What an enormous douchebag.

The footage is pretty cool, actually.  I hate our media so much.

Bottle rockets? How much weight can it lift off with? How high can it fly? Cause I'm thinking a gravity bomb would do more damage. Maybe just a soda can filled with sand or concrete.

I'm thinking that there is probably a LOT of RF interference in NEW YORK CITY, so not surprising that one might lose control without warning.

'They made an active decision to fly something they don't have control over obviously through the most crowded city, most crowded time of day and I can't believe there's no law against this,' the businessman told WABC
