Some phobias always seem like attention-seeking behavior to me. I can't prove it, and it feels wrong to assume, but puppets are so specific and artificial a thing to fear, that I can't really buy the notion that someone naturally fears them.

She realised the extent of her fear when she spotted a furry Muppet toy in a shop as an 18-year-old and 'just completely freaked out'.

What she needs is to go to a nice restaurant and have a good dinner prepared by a reliable chef.

This. Phobias like fear of heights, fear of snakes, fear of spiders, fear of water, etc., all have a natural, rational basis in an actual, useful fear. We are ALL somewhat afraid of those things because it's been to our advantage evolutionarily to at least be wary or careful when we encounter them. Someone with a phobia of those things just has that natural, common fear revved up for some reason.

I think what the attention whore in the article REALLY has is a bad memory associated with the Muppets and she has learned that pretending that it is debilitating gets her attention.

"Woman suffers from phobia but still lives normal life" I know it's a UK news site and therefore garbage but this is inane even for them.

I can understand being terrified of those creepy puppets from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. But the Muppets? That's just silly.

The other night my six year old told me that there are things he wishes he could forget. I'm thinking something awful, like he saw an animal get hit by a car. So I asked him what it was that was bothering him so much.

"Muppets from Space."

While there is no known cure for automatonophobia, possible treatments include hypnosis, psychoanalysis therapy and medication.

But Mrs Broom, from Swansea, said: 'I haven't sought medical advice - the phobia is so specialised that I can't imagine anyone will be able to help me.'

So instead of actually maybe ASKING a doctor if there REALLY isn't any help I'll just whinge to the local rag media about it. That'll solve all my problems. In a country with free healthcare no less.

What really freaked me out as a kid was the sketch where a lizard (sometimes it's Kermit) is sitting on a wall eating worms. The third time he tries to eat the worm, he keeps on pulling on it and finding it's a really long worm...until this HUGE monster looms into view from behind the wall and we see it's his nose. Monster eats the lizard, end of sketch.

Bigass monster suddenly appearing always scared the hell out of me. It's amazing how many sketches involve someone being messily eaten. Jim Henson was a big part of my childhood, but some of the stuff he created was seriously farked up.

In the UK, gangs of Muppets, plushies and puppets in black leather jackets, often wearing pompadour hairstyles, hang around on corners and harass passersby.

These are called "Teddy Boys".

They are a menace to all decent folk.

See illustrations of these "thugs", below:

To me, Muppets aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to Sesame Street on Ice, and Elmo killed my dad.
