So why is it "insensitive" ??
Other dead people have costumes. (Abe Lincoln, Elvis, Micheal Jackson, etc.)

I say sell the Osama costume with some Navy Seal outfits.

farkingismybusiness: I guess next you're going to tell me my HItler Halloween costume is offensive.

I do seem to remember a story about them selling a shirt with an SS totenkopf on it and possibly another with a line of clothing with a prominent 88 and other racist symbols on it. I expect the buyer probably didn't know what those meant at the time but I would hope that they should take the time to find out the meanings of what they are retailing.

2013-10-04 03:03:06 AM
Oh come on! They're making fun of Osama, not worshipping him! Is it wrong to turn an evil guy into a mascot to be ridiculed and used for fun? If you wanna be offended, then go find some site that praises Bin Laden's work, not something that belittles him into nothing but being a Halloween accessory!

2013-10-04 03:20:27 AM
They probably sell a George W. Bush costume, and he killed a hundred times more people than Osama.  But they were all brown, and brown people don't really count.  Well, we'll give 'em 3/5ths of a body count.  That's still more.

2013-10-04 03:48:51 AM
For the party that I went to on the first Halloween after 9/11/2001, there were so many bin Ladens that it was hard to keep count. One of them had a Ziploc baggie filled with flour with the label "ANTHRAX" on it (this was at the height of the anthrax mail scare.)

Considering this happens every year, why do I get the feeling that they actually deliberately ask their suppliers, "Can you make one really offensive, so we can get a media fuss about it to cave in to immediately, but which means we remind everyone we stock Halloween costumes".

Personally, I'm offended by assclowns with turbans, beards, invisible sky-wizards, and guns.

I'm shopping for the big lot of them when they hit E_Bay.

I don't think this costume was pulled because of "cultural sensitivity." I think the much more likely reason is that some redneck is going to shoot a kid wearing one of these costumes and shout, "I got him! I got Osama bin Laden! I'm gonna be a hero!"

I came here to say the same thing.  It's the same reason why they don't sell deer and turkey costumes.

So I went GIS'ing for the Zombie Osama bin Laden gun-range target. Yes, there's a company that makes one; it had actually been their number-one seller for years before he even died.

As I was looking for one of a suitable size, I found a Joffrey Baratheon target.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or to cry.

It's a Halloween costume.

It's supposed to be scary and in bad taste. That's why people traditionally dress up as devils, ghosts, witches, your Mother, and so forth.

A lot of politically correct types, both Left and Right wing, can find reasons why an OBL costume is tasteless, insensitive, and so forth. But that's pretty much the point of a Halloween costume--to be shocking, a violation of normalcy.

That's why people wear Presidential masks--Bush, Obama, Clinton, Reagan. They generally don't dress up as their favourite Saint or Humanitarian.

Like the traditional festivals associated with Mardi Gras, the Day of Misrule, Saturnalia, Christmas mummery, and so forth, the mummery is supposed to violate day-to-day norms.

The Old British Quarter Days were days when debts and rents were paid and accounts settled. Traditionally, the very poor were allowed to beg for food, drink, money, etc., and many people did this in disguise (as they might be ashamed of having to beg).

Halloween had deep roots in Pagan as well as Christian traditions of licence on certain feast days of the year. But all in all it was a very pious form of impiety and a social occasion of some importance.

Let OBL be OBL one day of the year, dammit. That's what its for.

Damned Puritans, always making war on the religious holidays of us atheists, Roman Catholics, mainstream Protestants, Pagans, Heathens, and so forth. They just spoil the holy days for everybody.

A Halloween costume is not an endorsement. The crime against taste, etc., if any, is in the intent, not the choice of costume. Dressing as OBL to endorse his crackpot reactionary religious and political aims is one thing. Dressing up because it's "scary" to see a little kid dressed as the Old Man of the Mountain is just fun. And it's not like you're doing it in Mecca or Medina. This is customary largely in the USA and Canada. Even the English only re-adopted their old customs recently. They largely died out in the Old Country or were slightly different in meaning and performance, such as making Jack o' Lanterns out of turnips instead of pumpkins because pumpkins are a New World fruit, not an Old World root.

Halloween is my favourite holiday. It has no real obligations. Christmas is a pain in the neck, Easter is just weird, Valentine's Day is a cruel joke and Thanksgiving, while it can be nice, is only as nice as your family are when they get together and get drunk or worked up over things that don't really matter, like the last 100 years of family history or football games.

You are free to participate in Halloween as much or as little as you please, and that makes it the best holiday, the only one that can give you a break, cut you some slack. You don't get that kind of leisure from Mother's Day or even your Birthday. Birthdays slack for no man.

2013-10-04 11:22:33 AM
They should just put the OBL costume on the same isle as the Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer costumes.
