From this article:

The woman driving the car was unarmed, law enforcement sources said. All the shots in the incident, which began about 2:14 p.m., were fired by police trying to stop her. Police fired at the car in at least two locations, as the car drove across Washington, and around the Capitol area.

I'm usually one defending the cops, but this is just weird.  Not nearly enough information, but sounds like there was maybe some poor communication among the different agencies involved.  Like if someone reported gunshots, but neglected to mention it wasn't the perp shooting.  In general it's a really stupid idea not to stop for cops because the potential for escalation always exists.  I'm just guessing, I'll shut up and wait for the followup.

Hate like hell to post this but?
I can feel sorry for  her child - and, as details come out i reserve the right to say the cops may have overreached in an abundance of caution and they likely will feel like shiat about it.

I've seen nothing about her being drunk, nor confirmation of her intent.

In the video, it looks like she's driving way to much for simple panic. They had her stopped, she took off and drove in circles as they boxed her in with barricades and cop cars.

With a kid in the car, if it was an accident, I would imagine at the most she would drive away from the guys with guns, stop and get out with her hands up or holding the baby.

Yes, anyone who desecrates the sacred sod in the vicinity of His Wonderfulness and then flees at a high rate of speed, then stopped miles away when surrounded by police, may not TECHNICALLY pose a threat to His Magificence's person, but she has offended His dignity, and for that her life is forfeit.

Did you see the video? She wasn't distracted or panicking. All she needed to do was stop. She was running at the barricades and trying to either flee or run someone down.

As to her motive, who knows; (we'll never know now) but this wasn't a case of mad-dog cops run amok. Also, she ended up at the White House, and there's no way the Secret Service, in this day & age and with this President, is going to do anything but shoot first and nevermind asking questions. Whether you're a drunken fool going the wrong way or a crazed gunman, if you run the gate at the White House, you may as well figure you WILL die at that point.

I wrote if she were merely panicked, and was not determined to harm other people or herself, she might grab the kid AFTER driving away from the guys with guns.

Idiot news and officials are trying to spin that as "she was a threat because she tried to ram through a barrier to get to the White House."

Wrong. At the checkpoint agents were yelling and they tried to pull a gate so she couldn't leave so  she rammed the barrier to get away from the White House.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/police-lock-down-capitol-afte r- shots-fired/2013/10/03/48459e0e-2c5a-11e3-8ade-a1f23cda135e_story.html

At the beginning of it all, Oregon residents B.J. and Susan Campbell saw a black sedan driven by a woman heading west on Pennsylvania, into a security checkpoint at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The driver went about 20 yards, B.J. Campbell said, before rapidly turning the car around at the concrete security barriers.

"The Secret Service guy was just having a cow," B.J. Campbell said. "Yelling at her and banging on the car." The Secret Service officers pulled a black metal gate into her path and she slowed to try to go around it. Then the agent moved the gate in front of her again.

Well, her co-workers say she had a daughter exactly that age.  Are you wanting DNA evidence?  Not enough time yet.  No one else seems to have reported a missing kid today in Conn. or the surrounding area, but of course, she could have dumped her real child somewhere else and kidnapped a kid from some person who hasn't noticed yet.

From the Zimmerman threads, I learned from all of the opinionated know-it-alls that whenever someone shoots and kills an unarmed person and then claims it was in self-defense, the "law" requires there to be arrest and a trial, so that we can then find out what happened.

I also learned that you don't need to have evidence of guilt before the arrest-and-trial phase begins. It's OK for the trial to be a fact-finding exercise.

Also, the shooter is presumed to be a murderer until he can prove otherwise. He shot someone, right?

Also, it's perfectly acceptable to make your shooter walk his investigators through the scene and have him give multiple recorded statements without an attorney.

And any exculpatory statements he makes are to be given zero credence whatsoever, even if they are later corroborated independently.

So, when will the "hero" cop that shot and killed an unarmed woman as she was exiting her car be arrested and stand trial?

It means she should be arrested and charged with that crime.

The police taking potshots at the car and later shooting the woman dead (a) didn't stop the car, (b) prevented an arrest or conviction of the suspect, (c) endangered additional people including the child in the car.

If you're asking "doesn't getting revenge for an agent's injury trump all that," I'd say no.

What?  WHAT?  You're actually posting that in public?

A government that shoots people dead is so much more...effective, though.

never mind that one of the reasons we say we pay those LE people so much is that they should be willing to take a bump...or worse...once in awhile...

LandOfChocolate: Oysterman: FTFA:  When they boxed her in, sources said, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired.

By whom is a big part they left out.

From this article:

The woman driving the car was unarmed, law enforcement sources said. All the shots in the incident, which began about 2:14 p.m., were fired by police trying to stop her. Police fired at the car in at least two locations, as the car drove across Washington, and around the Capitol area.

What better way to stop a confused and frightened woman than to shoot her?

Cops these days are off the chain. Yeah she done farked up big time. She should have complied with the police instead of driving off. Maybe she panicked. So the cops start firing shots as the car speeds off. That seems reckless given all the civilians about. After a short chase they get the vehicle stopped. There's no indication she's armed. She could be but she hasn't fired any shots. She gets out the car and some trigger happy sonofabiatch later she's dead.

Bad call on her part. Bad call on the police's part. It shouldn't have ended this way. I should be reading about how they have a suspect in custody. It's terrible that I've come to expect this sort of mishap when police are involved. I have no trust or faith in their ability to do their jobs.

One of the more interesting aspects of this story, as it broke, is the sheer number of video cameras doing "citizen reportage."  Some of the alleged news feed was from entities that seem to have sprung up...today (I'll admit, if I got good footage of something like this, I too would be a news agency by the end of the day).

There were other videos of the barricade incident, showing the other side of the car (more mangled than the side we see in this one), but they are gone from youtube (and liveleak) now.  It's a crime under investigation, you know, so we can't be watching these videos.

technicolor-misfit: MechaPyx: Cops these days are off the chain.

Look... a lotta guys go their whole careers without getting a single opportunity to kill someone.

When the chance presents itself, you don't hesitate, you don't ask questions, you don't start wool-gathering about "credible threats." You draw your weapon and fire, or you watch that opportunity vanish in a cloud of smoke like a million dollar lottery ticket carelessly tossed into a campfire.

You can live your dreams, or you can watch them pass you by.

You're right of course. What was I thinking? It's totally unfair these guys should be denied the chance to experience that. You only live once right.

This was a woman driving an SUV, with a 1 year old child in the car.  Not exactly the poster child for terrorism, right?  I'm guessing that while driving like a woman, she made a wrong turn and then got all pissy when the guard told her to turn around and leave.  After that her emotions got the best of her and she berated a lowly "rent-a-cop", (which is what she would probably call him), and while trying to get herself and her precious offspring out of there she sideswiped a patrol car that was trying to force her to stop.  The cops, of course, immediately took that as an excuse to use their very-expensive, only-used-during-training-exercises weapons, and blew her head off.

But "Yhe cops are heroes and they saved us from a maniac that wanted to storm the Capitol".  Yeah, sure.

Phinn: From the Zimmerman threads, I learned from all of the opinionated know-it-alls that whenever someone shoots and kills an unarmed person and then claims it was in self-defense, the "law" requires there to be arrest and a trial, so that we can then find out what happened.

I am learning from this thread that you think this is about you.  It's not.

We still don't know enough to make any decisions.

We do know this woman did indeed slam into a White House barrier, fled police, hit a Secret Service officer, and then led police on a high speed chase to the Capitol, where she also tried and failed to ram barriers. If you think that is panicking and losing control of your car I don't agree with you.

The Capitol Police officer that was injured from driving into a barrier was injured because he was heading to the scene when the barriers were put up remotely.

A car is a lethal weapon. This woman ran into at least one cop. I am sure all involved officers will be cleared of any wrongdoing.

In summary, a crazy, stupid person did something crazy and stupid, and they are dead now. I do feel bad for the baby that will grow up without a biological mother, but by the time she's adopted out, no one has to tell her anything about what happened, and she'll never know. I also feel bad for the cops, a very good friend of mine was a Capitol Police officer for a lot of years, and a lot of them were there without being paid.

That, and the barriers are high enough when fully extended to stop a car that low cold.  Even if it was halfway up, he'd probably gone ass-over-teakettle and ripped out the whole undercarriage.  I think it came up under him.

About time someone said this.

One of the problems that police cause when they shoot unarmed women who are in the process of parking their deadly car-weapons and exiting them on foot, especially in such prominent cases, is that it gives future criminals every incentive to refuse to surrender, and to continue putting people's lives at risk by escaping at all costs.

The typical government reaction is to escalate the situation to 100% intensity every time, not out of a desire to control things or minimize risk, but out of a sense of revenge against (and dominance over) anyone who would defy them or injure one of their own.

If they reacted with such vigor every time a person was attacked, battered, injured or killed as when it's another cop, I'd assume they had a different motive. But as it is, cops clearly operate from an us-versus-the-world, tribal mentality.

This country has really taken EXTREME to heart. A trespasser is now a possible terrorist. Corn chips can't just be nacho cheese anymore, they gotta be eXtreme cheese. Sports just aren't cool enough unless they happen at the EXTREME games. Bumping into someone with a car is assault with a deadly weapon.

At no point did the security detail at the whitehouse calmly approach the woman as she drove onto the property. No one asked her what she was doing before they slammed the gates behind her. One wrong move and suddenly she's not a lost tourist but a threat to the President.

We all need to chill the fark out. Learn nuance. Practice kindness. Approach with politeness.

Be nice.

I actually find it interesting how this progressed in stages from a reporting and reaction standpoint.

1.  Shooting at the Capitol, officer down, unknown number of wounded.  MASS SHOOTING!  ZOMG GUNZ!
2.  Is it a right-wing conservative gun nut?  The Tea Party fringe?  Something to do with the shutdown?  ZOMG REPUBLICANZ!
3.  It was a woman!  ZOMG FEMALE TERRORIST!  Why didn't the police shoot sooner!
4.  Wait, it was a woman with a baby?  Umm.  ZOMG....um
5.  Wait, it was a black woman with a baby?  And she had a career and family?  Huh?  ZOMG! Why did the police have to shoot!
6.  ZOMG! Post-partum depression!  Why did the police have to kill this innocent woman!

And this was all over the space of two hours.  Cronkite is spinning in his grave.

This.
If we avoid the temptation to narrate from the end of the story then the cops response is justifiable.
Yes it looks like she panicked at seeing a half dozen officers with guns drawn, but there was no way for anyone at the scene to know all this. They had to treat her like a full blown terrorist once she started ramming things.

The real question is how does a mentally troubled person get behind the wheel of a car and go on a joyride.
Those weren't cheap wheels, someone had to be missing them.

In light of this, I have to feel sorry for this woman. It's really sad.

Normally I'm pretty harsh on cops because they have a tendency to have a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality. And they frequently abuse their authority, particularly when they perceive a threat or disrespect to themselves or one of their own.

But what should they have done in this situation? The woman was acting, well, crazy. You can say they shouldn't have shot her, but that's easy to say in retrospect, since we now know she didn't have any weapons. At the time they had no idea what she was trying to do, but she was definitely driving dangerously, so something had to be done. If there was another way to do it without this lady being killed I'd wish they'd have handled it differently. As it is I think it's mostly just a really unfortunate situation. At least the baby's okay.

Look, you have to admit, most people wouldn't exactly be shocked if a teabagger did something like this. If they're already mentally ill, it's easy to see how they would get the motivation to do something dangerous since their way of life revolves around getting all angry and worked up about the government.

Anyway, whatever the motivation, I strongly suspected it was the result of mental illness. I've had a hard time believing she behaved the way she did because she was just freaked out and panicked. Only a huge moron would have done that with a baby in the car.

Ramming someone's else's car is assault with a deadly weapon. Everything that happens after that is on you.
Guess who doesn't know how self defense laws work.

For the ignorant among us, yes you may respond with lethal force while a person is a threat. That is during their attack on you. Grabbing a gun and shooting them later -even if later is just 30 seconds after they stop- is illegal and defined as murder.

If the police shot her while she was attempting to ram a gate or SS guard, the shoot would have been regrettable, but justified. Instead, she was gunned down while unarmed, outside her car, when she was no more threat than a wal-mart shoplifter. Arrest her and put her in jail for as long as the law allows, fine. Gun her down? No, that's what happens in a police state or klan rally.

I really don't get this type of rhetoric.  I know a lot of "Laming Fliberals", and they are not worshippers of this president, who aside from his skin color, is a centrist, rather unemotional bureaucrat.  They are not thrilled by his willingness to compromise with the Republicans or his gradual approach to winding down the Middle-East wars started in the previous Republican administration.  I'm kind of a libertarian in some ways, and I think he's doing a good job of keeping everybody slightly disappointed, which in my mind is what good governance looks like.  All this "Magificence" and "Obamessiah" BS comes from the White Ring.

I know you're busy furiously masterbating over the idea that the government did something wrong, but you are not correct.

That's what happens when you live in a country of 300m guns, when a person puts the lives of multiple people at risk right next to the place where the president of the free world and all of the governing body is located.

If anything is to be learned from this, it's that you don't start ramming cars and people when a dozen police and secret service have their guns pointed at you. When you do, your life is forfeit. I honestly hope you do NOT heed this lesson if you cannot understand this most basic principle.

I was referring more to a pervasive reverence for government generally, and the concomitant reverence for the symbols of the State.

Case in point, I refer to another post in this very thread that's representative of that theme --

Gyrfalcon: As to her motive, who knows; (we'll never know now) but this wasn't a case of mad-dog cops run amok.

You'll have to ask Gyrfalcon what he meant by "with this President," as opposed to the protection offered to every other President, but you'll notice the general theme of sacred governmental space -- where the curtilage of the far side of the Executive office building two blocks from the White House is treated as holy ground where the age-old principles on the ethical use of lethal force are suspended.  Disobey --> die.

I have also seen no evidence that she attempted to ram her way onto the White House grounds.  I'm fairly sure that's physically impossible with a car like that.  I did see her pushing a police car with the rear of her car, as part of her general effort to get away from that driveway, but nothing to show that she tried to force her way in, except perhaps by using some salty and defiant language with the cops.

Also, she was killed at the Senate building on Capitol Hill, which is some time and distance away from the holy ground of the White House, and after her car had either stopped or been disabled by those pop-up street barriers.

The normal rules of civilized life say that you don't get to summarily kill someone who does not pose a threat.  At the moment she was killed, she was unarmed and her car was disabled.  Mistakes happen, but for the shooting to be remotely justifiable, the shooter(s) must have had a reason to believe she posed an actual threat.

Other than the taint of her effrontery -- deigning to tread upon forbidden ground to seek the imperial presence, and refusal to comply with the instructions of the inner guard -- what exactly was the reason for shooting her?

There may be a good answer to that question, but so far, no one has really offered one.  What I am commenting on is the idea that no one needs to offer one, since her defiance of authority is, in itself, sufficient grounds for immediate execution.
