(Huffington Post)   Jocks and yokels at Ole Miss interrupt screening of "The Laramie Project" to yell anti-gay slurs at the cast. Stay classy, Mississippi. Oh, wait, you're Mississippi. Sorry. Well, try to not lynch anyone, at least   (huffingtonpost.com) divider line 313

So let me guess, we won't hear one peep from the NCAA about this.  But if some 3rd-string punter wore the wrong company's logo when appearing together as a team, they'd come down with sanctions.  Amiright?

Yes. It's a low point.

Jocks and yokels? I think i own that gay porno on DVD.

2013-10-03 05:04:56 PM
I'm not defending them but maybe because the production had, you know -gays in it that it was like Rocky Horror -where you are expected to shout out in the theater.

2013-10-03 05:20:46 PM
Yes... men who roll around on the ground with sweaty men wearing tight pants, who then go shower together, really have the standing to comment on this issue.

So, was this like something that the students were forced to watch?  I doubt that in college?

So, this wasn't like "God, they made me sit through this, I'm going to heckle it" (not that it would have been appropriate then either).... these guys deliberately went to it to "heckle the gay play!".

Dumbasses probably thought "Laramie Project" would be a western, or something about the cigarette industry. Instead, gay cowboys eating pudding.

They should fail.

Maybe it was because The Laramie Project sucks. Because it's not a very good play. Just sayin'.

Or it could be that the audience consisted of (mostly) total douchebags.

Either way, when the hell do you yell shiat during a play? Stfu. Leave a bad review.

Could have gone with the ironic tag on that one.  The footballers should just stick to tapping heads in the shower.  That's what they're good at.

According to the Playbill article, they were indeed there as part of a freshman-level theatre class.

I can't believe this stuff happens in 2013. I remember in the 90's (when I was young and dumb) you'd see more gay acceptance in the media and I really thought the whole thing would explode and become normalized by the new millenium. The upcoming "year 2000" seemed like such a great time for society to go into this new enlightened age and everyone would be open and you'd see more gay people in the mainstream and gay love scenes and gays in politics and everything and it would all be an everyday part of our culture.

What happened? You don't even see shows like Jenny Jones anymore, doing their part to spread awareness about gay issues. I think we've actually regressed on this front since the mid 90's. It's embarrassing.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure, and you may know me from such race riots as the Paducah Paddywhacking and the Biloxi Beaner Bash. Always smoke Laramies.

The NCAA is actually relatively powerless to abridge the rights of students performing legal speech.

They get some leverage on uniform stuff becomes that actually falls under competition rules regulations.

On the plus side, if we had just let the South win the Civil War, we could have ridded ourselves of this embarrassment 150 years ago.

On the minus side, our illegal immigration problem today would involve millions of ignorant redneck crackers instead of hardworking Mexicans.

2013-10-03 06:16:56 PM
Well, if there's someone who has an opinion of who's gay & who isn't, it's probably a guy who showers with other guys on a daily basis...  Not that there's anything wrong with that...  Just sayin

Here's to the state of Mississippi,
For underneath her borders, the devil draws no lines,
If you drag her muddy river, nameless bodies you will find.
Whoa the fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes,
The calender is lyin' when it reads the present time.
Whoa here's to the land you've torn out the heart of,
Mississippi, find yourself another country to be part of!

It's Mississippi; I expect animals to behave like animals, not human beings.

It's sounds like these arseholes had a choice about attending the play, and had bad intentions fromthegetgo.

Doesn't sound from that like they were yelling at the stage, just not paying much attention to the play and making dumb, homophobic remarks to each other loud enough for the cast to hear. You know, being 19-year-old jocks. Probably wouldn't have happened if they hadn't been sitting in a group.

I love how we hear about the apologies from the athletic department, but we haven't heard a damned thing about what they've done to discipline the athletes. I love how we hear about the disappointment of the Dean of Students, but we haven't heard a damned thing about what he's done to discipline the students.

Hate speech performed without consequences is hate speech supported without consequences.

Heckuva job, Ole Miss. Heckuva job.

Oh, and subby, you don't "screen" a play. That's movies. You stage a play.

plus side: for one evening in 2013 a bunch of a-holes weren't out harassing black folks in MS.

Thank goodness! Does that mean it was OK to torture and kill him, then?
