"It was very evident to everyone in the room that Cruz doesn't have a strategy - he never had a strategy, and could never answer a question about what the end-game was," an unnamed senator told Politico. "I just wish the 35 House members that have bought the snake oil that was sold could witness what was witnessed today at lunch."

At one point in the meeting, Republicans pressed Cruz to tell them what he would have done had the party united behind his call to filibuster a House-passed continuing resolution to keep the defunding hopes alives. Only 19 Republicans backed Cruz's attempt to block the bill.

"He kept trying to change the subject because he never could answer the question," the anonymous senator said. "It's pretty evident it's never been about a strategy - it's been about him. That's unfortunate. I think he's done our country a major disservice. I think he's done Republicans a major disservice."

"this is a sign he is kicking the RINO's butts! We will all be better off when all this spending stops for good! We will take the house AND the senate next!  Cruz/Palin 2016 - book it, done!"

If things went as planned, he should have been kicked out in the primary. But the Texas redistricting lawsuit happened. They couldn't agree on interim maps in time for the planned Texas GOP primary, so the primary was pushed back a few months. This gave Cruz, who was lagging in the polls by a large margin, enough time to turn the derp up to 11 and attract the support of tea party groups. When the primary came around, he crushed his opponent (Dewhurst, if I remember right). After that, it was largely one-sided campaign against a Democratic rival who's name no one could remember.

Ta-da.

I think I have detected a wee flaw in your reasoning. There are lots of kinds of stupid. Some people become stupid by catering to their own egos. If you must pick and choose your reality based on the things you want to hear then eventually you are going to miss some important bits of information.

A longtime Republican on the Hill explains, "The members have real life experience now. What [the defund Obamacare leaders] said didn't happen." Indeed, there is zero chance Obamacare will be defunded, and Democratic support for the defund effort never appeared as Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had assured them it would. There is no sign the shutdown is forcing the president to cave; if anything he's dug in even further. The entire escapade made it impossible for Republicans, at least for now, to obtain smaller gains and, most important, get onto the main event, the debt ceiling.

Yep, exactly as I said in a post a few days ago before the shutdown. Someone posted about how more people opposed Obamacare than supported it. I pointed out that around 16% of those who do not support it do so because they want a single payer system. These are the liberalest of the liberals and in no way would they ever join with Republicans to repeal Obamacare. That that 16% should just be added to the "those who support" numbers because they would never vote to repeal but make it more single payer; which would make it the majority. I said betting on their support was a "fools bet". Well looks like Cruz and his buddies were just the fools to make the bet.

My current theory is that he was played.  He was promised things, and then the rug was yanked out from under him.  He's fresh enough behind the ears to be politically naive in this environment, and he listened to the pundits a little too much.  He's part of a group that is anxious to unseat incumbents within his own party, and do you think they were going to stand for it?  They are preparing to play a game wherein they let the Tea Party render themselves marginalized.

Tea Partiers aren't only bad at understanding economics or public perception outside of their tiny little gerrymandered districts: They also have no concept of political gamesmanship, apparently.

I'm trying to think of if there have ever been more destructive people running around in Congress. It's like we have a bunch of John C. Calhouns running around in the House, ready to destroy the country if they don't get everything they want (and everything that they want is terrible, by the way).

I was there for work during those primaries and the commentary and commercials were unbelievable.  One guy on the radio said basically "Dewhurst isn't electable because in 2009 worked with Democrats on a bipartisan bill"

I shiat you not.  It was at that time I made the decision not to move there, something I had been contemplating due to the >10% raise I would be getting (Californian paying top tax rate).

They be crazy in that state so despite all this chicanery I would say he will be re-elected until that state goes blue in 2020 or so.  Hope it goes blue before then so all the gerrymandering can be fixed but that might take another decade.. :(

Exactly right. As I've pointed out in countless threads, Texas had a choice: an asshole (Dewhurst) or a f*cking asshole (Cruz).  Of course the voters here made the bootstappy choice.

parasol: I can hear it now, from the Tea Party

"this is a sign he is kicking the RINO's butts! We will all be better off when all this spending stops for good! We will take the house AND the senate next!  Cruz/Palin 2016 - book it, done!"

pardon me - i have to go bathe in lye now

The more over-the-top things Pubs might say the more believable they are. So glad I stopped believing in that party.

deeyablo: Weaver95: Cruz isn't completely stupid...he has to know that his party will sell him out in an instant to save themselves from a howling mob of pissed off voters.

What rug though? What have the Old Guard GOP done through this whole thing besides be a bunch of wishy-washy cowards?

If this was all about cleaning out the Tea Heads, the time to lay the smack down was a couple weeks ago, or right about when Teddy was reading Green Eggs and Ham. Not after the shutdown and risk the whole party taking heat for it.

You can't pull a move like this unless you have people 100% lined up. Going into this the GOP were already saying this was dumb where the Democrats were unified (for once in history).

Now more cracks are showing. The Republicans who were told to do this are already getting cold feet and trying to find a way out by finding anything to save face. The Democrats should just wait, not give the Republicans their first way to retreat and make them pay the price so they don't do this shiat again.

In the past Democrats gave Republicans the easy way out after the GOP painted themselves in a corner, they have to stop doing that and make them pay a price so they will actually stop doing it.

For example not just give them the tax on medical equipment, they should ask for the small hand full of change to Obamacare that they also want. Which would also make Republicans on record for voting for something for Obamacare too.

Rubin is an expert at changing her "entrenched" beliefs once reality comes careening towards her. Read her pre-November 2012 "Romney is an Unstoppable Beast running a Flawless Campaign" columns days before the election and compare them with her "Romney is the worstiest worst candidate ever and ran an inept campaign" column tearing him apart just days after the election to see this at its finest.

Thing is, this is clearly not the first utterly stupid thing the Republicans have done legislatively in the last several years.  They've been forced to vote against their own budget bills, fillibuster their own bills, and crap like that, because no one is doing any planning.

They're seat-of-their pants, but also tremendously awful.  But also utterly relentless.  There's no stopping them, it's like a perpetual motion machine of idiocy.

The government shutdown is just the latest, but there will be more.  I only hope we're not exponentially getting worse.

Not really necessary. Rubin is a GOP foot soldier and most of her articles are trying selling the party line. She rarely shows any kind of independent ideas. If she's going after Cruz it is because the party decided that he was out a while ago.

See, this is why liberals don't get what they want.

One Senate aide said, "I  don't think Sen. Cruz entered that meeting with a thick skin, but he left learning he needs one going forward, along with a strategy."

I know one. He is soo. Much fun to fark with. When you prove him wrong or show him how idiotic he is being, he claims it was satire. For example, he posted an article about how the Kentucky militia stopped russian soldiers with DHS uniforms hauling a Humvee with a DHS paint job. There was a side article about how Fartbongo sold all of our national parks to the UN based on a plaque someone saw. He claimed it was satire.

He also thinks his fat ass and his AR-15 could take on trained, heavily armed UN troops, or at least be able to take out a few of them before they get him.

Its pure comedy gold every single day.

Wow, Rubin is working really hard to make Cruz look like an outlier. Except it's not going to work. The problem is the House, specifically, House Republicans. Corvus: You can't pull a move like this unless you have people 100% lined up.

The problem is many Democrats want to do their job. Which is running the country, not sticking it to the opposition. And the best thing for the country is to give the Republicans an easy way out. If you pin them in a corner, they will all fight tooth and nail. But gove them a way out to save some face and you will end the squabble muach more easily (that said, I would push for the debt ceiling to be resolved at the same time so we aren't in the same place a little while later).

Cruz was betting on two things:

1) Democrats caving
2) Massive public backlash against the Democrats.

Neither of which was a good bet and neither appears to be paying off.

I don't think he is stupid. I think it is similar to Romney's people (who were also not stupid) buying into the hype and honestly thinking they were the ones with the advantage. The GOP, and the Tea Party in particular, rely far more heavily on controlling the message. Unfortunately they are buying into the line they are trying to sell to the public based on reactions from the base.

I would say that the people that voted for him blame the democrats.

So, there's that.

Yes, and those are the only people they hear. Along with the belief in the large number of people who really support them but just don't know it it makes them buy into the belief that that have widespread support from all but the libbiest libs.

Shostie: Car_Ramrod: "It was very evident to everyone in the room that Cruz doesn't have a strategy - he never had a strategy, and could never answer a question about what the end-game was," an unnamed senator told Politico.

Christ, no one likes Ted Cruz. How the hell did he get elected, let alone become a figurehead?

If things went as planned, he should have been kicked out in the primary. But the Texas redistricting lawsuit happened. They couldn't agree on interim maps in time for the planned Texas GOP primary, so the primary was pushed back a few months. This gave Cruz, who was lagging in the polls by a large margin, enough time to turn the derp up to 11 and attract the support of tea party groups. When the primary came around, he crushed his opponent (Dewhurst, if I remember right). After that, it was largely one-sided campaign against a Democratic rival who's name no one could remember.

Ta-da.

Yep, that's exactly how it happened.

When he was elected, I told my husband he was going to do a lot of hurt to this country.

you are a puppet: Does anyone else hear Will Forte's voice every time you see Cruz's face?

Honestly? I don't know if I've listened to his voice. As terrible as it is to say, I feel like with the pictures posted here, he's just lisping every word.

George W. Bush is probably an okay guy for a rich entitled scion of a political dynasty that's been playing fast & loose with American policy since Prescott Bush (allegedly) looked into having FDR assassinated so the fascists could take over the country. I've often said that he would have been at worst a mediocre president had he not been forced by circumstances into an extraordinary time and saddled with Evil Incarnate as his vice president--had he been President in the 90's while the economy was fair and the world situation was stable, he'd have been a dull, unnoticed figure in the White House.

But do you really want a dull, unnoticed President?

Well I don't know him personally but if I were to guess I'd hypothesize that he's a dimwitted northerner whose Daddy pushed him through Ivy schools then pretended to be a Texan, dressed in a cowboy costume and developed an "aw shucks" persona to appeal to the rubes and it worked pretty well. In his defense though I'd bet he can hold his beer.

Nadie_AZ: I like the jab at Rubio. He disappeared pretty quickly.

That's because Rubio isn't a real tea party person. He's a career politician who saw an opportunity to outflank a fellow republican in the primary who tacked a little too far to the left too early. Make no mistake, Rubio will drop the tea party BS as soon as it's politically convenient.

FTFA: Moreover, Obama, unlike Cruz, was not openly hostile to his colleagues, thereby preventing a nonstop flood of criticism and embarrassing anecdotes.

This isn't nearly enough to describe the differences.  Obama worked with people all over the Senate floor.  Even before he started in the Senate, he worked his butt off to help other Democrats get elected or re-elected.  In 3 years he had built up an incredible bank of favors to draw on, plus had been careful NOT to piss anyone off, plus had built up his media image in a positive way.  In 8 months Cruz has accomplished the opposite of all of those things.  He's managed to out-douche Gingrich and he has no leadership post.  The only thing he's got going for him now is 5 years till re-election.

He'd still be at Louis Gohmert's level

Will Forte's Zell Miller is still one of the funniest things I've seen on Saturday Night Live in the last 10 years.

Weaver95: Mugato: I haven't read all these threads and none of my friends are right wing psychos except one but he's an old friend and we keep conversations to Star Wars and the farking pictures of his kids on Facebook but are there any Ted Cruz or Tea Partiers in general supporters out there in the real world?

I know a few. Oddly enough one of them is a bit upset because the shut down might interrupt his disability checks while hes on vacation in Aruba. And I wish I was exaggerating about that....

"The world is made for people who aren't cursed with self awareness." - Annie, Bull Durham

That quote pretty much sums up the Tea Party types for me...

So we have an entire body of citizens, elected for their leadership qualities who are physically incapable of recognizing incompetent and stupid leadership...

That's so amusing I got an erection.
