Certain parts of the party have built a chamber so echo-y that they truly, honestly believe that they are currently winning both the negotiations and the hearts and minds of the American people.

That's why I think we're seriously at risk, for the first time, of actually no-shiat defaulting.

Based on WTOP's reported polling, 44% blame the GOP, 17% blame bof sidez, and almost 30% blame the Dems/Obama. ONLY 44%?!?!?

False equivalency is not just a false equivalency, it's an outright false statement.

We already have a "comprimise".   The Senate passed the "clean" CR with bi partisan support.   If Boehner would put it on the floor now, it would pass with bi-partisan support again and this whole thing would be over.

This is not about the two sides not being able to find common ground or being unwilling to comprimise.

This is about one side being hijacked by neo-confederate, anti-government  insurrectionists who went to Washington to sabotage it from the inside.   The GOP Party is too dickless to stop them, and the Democrats can't negotiate with them without rewarding terrorist tactics.

Yeah pretty much this. Ive seen seasoned professionals fark that one up from time to time. And remember these guys may be a tad stressed. I think the key for me is Rand saying that they "don't want to be there" meaning in that position. Thats not something a republican ever admits publicly.

But this seems taken out of context that the main argument was an election platform plank the President won a second term with and the negotiation tactics from the Republicans was to threaten to shut everything down should this (implicitly voter approved legislation) not be completely mangled. It's clear neither side will budge, but the Republican position is the one of bad faith so blame should logically fall on them for trying to re-fight a presidential election in such a manner.

The GOP leadership still thought Romney was going to win even as the polls started to come in. Never underestimate the power of denial.

I don't think it is denial. I think it has more to do with the echo chamber. They trust GOP friendly pollsters (unskewed!) , watch FOX news and listen to Limbaugh etc. Everywhere they look people are in favor of what they are doing. They just don't look widely enough.

I feel like this will end badly for the GOP.

The American people expect the two side to work together to find a solution. You don't need to take a poll to know that. They can see which side is trying to work for a solution and which side is not.

You mean a solution to the problem they caused, after getting all of what they wanted in budget cuts (you know the actual point of a budget CR)? That's the problem they're looking to "solve," right?

If I mug you and then you catch up with me, is it appropriate for me to ask to keep half of your money? Do I get to say you aren't working for a solution if you refuse? Why aren't you working with me, just give me half your money and this can be over!

It sounds like it wasn't politically related, something about cops cornering a car, someone from the car shooting, and then the cops arresting the shooter.

But who knows?

You know how this crap goes. You'd think 1/3 of the American population was "the second shooter" at this point.

Who Do You Blame More for the Government Shutdown?
                                 Now     Before Shutdown (9/25/2013)
Republicans in Congress          44%          44%

2013-10-03 02:41:57 PM

quizzical: My favorite part of that exchange is "I don't think they poll tested 'we won't negotiate.' I think it's awful for them to say that over and over again." Because where are their heads at, that they're worried about poll testing phrases in this middle of this crisis of government?  And it also seems to indicate that they think "We won't negotiate" is just a Democratic catchphrase instead of a firm position that Republicans must acknowledge so they can decide whether they want to perpetuate the situation.

Again, the precious GOP faith in PR over governance.
