He kept his normal human strength, even when shrunk down.

the only instance of conservation of mass in comics, which would make antman incredibly dense, but he is like on the list of the top 10 smartest people in the marvel universe

He's only super strong when he grows to giant size.

When he's ant-sized (or smaller) he retains the strength of his normal height, but concentrated in that tiny space. That means when he hits someone at that size, it's pretty damned painful.

But it's even worse when he's changing size and hits with the impact of that action.
