Maybe "his way" is to use public funding?

As an engineer, I have to try real hard to think about the money involved in my work. I am always thinking about the product itself. Doing something "my way" would involve me designing and developing the product without concession to anyone else. It would not refer to funding.

Shortly after paying off his $465 million loan, Musk proclaimed that government should no longer provide such assistance.

It takes balls to call for the elimination of the loan program that got your own business off the ground. I guess it was fine for him, but it's wrong if anyone else gets the money.

"Elon is now looking at it from the point of view of a winner, and he doesn't want to see other people win because they get government money," speculates Motavalli

Bingo!

Musk didn't drink, but they made enough off kegs and Jell-O shots to put themselves through college

Illegal alcohol sales put him through college. Neat!

THIS.

He wasn't just given money.

He was given money, asked to pay it back in installments, with interest, and he did. If anything he cost the government a little bit of money because he paid back the loan too soon. But, that's not worthy of biatching about either.

I know this isn't as important as the debate about the relationship of government and private enterprise, but Elon Musk is a pretty boy?

Yeah, isn't Mother Jones supposed to be one of those 'high standards' journalism organizations? Kind of like Village Voice, they are supposed to be an 'alternative' news source that reliable.

/Or so I thought...

I assume it's a literal quote from TFA, honestly, which given it's Mother Jones means that it's a rambling conspiracy theory based entirely on facts and quotes that the writer made up, usually without even knowing who or what the subject of the article was until 5 minutes before the deadline.

And yet, according to Scott Adams, he has prissy little T-Rex arms.

I don't think Elon Musk is as poo-pooing of public support as this article makes him out to be.  But I think he is playing the politics:  These days, anything that takes public funding in any way is immediately bad and evil in the eyes of nearly half the country.  Obviously it is hard to achieve long term success when half the country is against you, and he already has an uphill climb with conservatives because fark Electric Vehicles.  As long as he had the government loan, shiat heads like Mitt Romney would use him to score cheap political points.  By making a big deal out of getting rid of the loan, he can give a nod and a wink to the conservative raging hardon for "Private Sector Success Stories".  Even now there are a few conservatives enthusiastic about Tesla, where a year ago there were zero.  That's good for everyone, even if their reasoning for it is retarded.

Yeah, but the gov't wasn't charging interest that was commensurate with the size or the risk of the loan (because, unlike a bank, the gov't wasn't in it for a profit). As such I think it's pretty unfair to compare it to a normal loan.

Technically speaking, you never did anything yourself.

Graduated from school? You probably used public roads and borrowed money.
Made breakfast? Someone else had to transport your pop tarts and mountain dew.
Took a shiat? You're using the municipal sewer system and water system.

It's a figure of speech, the guy didn't work in a pair or collaborate heavily with a co-founder or something. Now stop being hypersensitive about semantics and take some lithium.

Unless he now claims that such government loans are a bad idea.  Fark you, I got mine.

So the guy who started an electric car company (with plans to build a sports car then a luxury car then an suv/minivan...) before there were any subsidies for electric cars owes everything to the government because they now subsidize electric cars.

The stupid is strong in this one.
