I get that a lot of things are affected, but I'd have to guess there's exactly 0 chance of finding that Idaho woman alive.

At this point, they'd most likely be scaling back the search anyway.  They were reported missing on the 23rd, and the body of one of the women was found on the 25th.

Having said that, the shutdown does suck.  For example, my brother is a park guide at a national historical site.  Right now, he's out of work and not getting paid, and neither is his girlfriend.

Oh, I agree.  What, 900,000 people off with no pay?  Now for SOME I'm sure it's just a "WOOT free vacation days!" but for others living paycheck to paycheck it could be disastrous.  I know this is only a psychological thing (at least to those not working there), but it really sucks having our nation's great national parks, historic sites, memorials and museums off limits.  I'd imagine any foreign tourists on their visits to DC (last time I was there, there were quite a few) are more than a bit miffed that their vacation is basically ruined.  Lots of impact from this, just saying that that woman in Idaho is almost certainly dead.

The Weenerser on the page said something about knock-on effects from the shutdown, and got the reply "You're reading Al Jazeera?"

I guess to the unfamiliar, "Al Anything" = "Al Qaeda," but I just wish that impression wasn't so common.

The shutdown is no big deal. Also, Obama is destroying the country by shutting down the government.

It's good that welfare queens have to learn to pull up their bootstraps. It's a good lesson for their kids to not have food. It's a travesty that a memorial is closed.

If you are lost in the mountains, it's your fault for not being prepared. It's shameful that Obama is letting those poor women die.

At what point will the American public break out the guillotines and go all French Revolution on those elected officials who don't give the slightest of sh*ts about anyone but themselves? Because, frankly, with all the sh*t the Republican party (and yes, while there are a number of Democrats and Independents who are bad, the vast majority are Republicans) has put the American people through in the last decade, what the hell else is there left to lose?

On the contrary; furloughs by default do not get back pay. Congress has to pass legislation after the fact to grant pay for that duration.

I agree Al Jazeera is becoming a pretty good news source when covering the US, they get agenda-y when they are covering the middle east though. NPR is good for international news IMO...

Not really. The discourse parallels the anti-science bullsh*t they put forward about climate change. "It isn't happening," "It is happening but it isn't that bad," and "Whether or not it is happening it isn't our fault so we shouldn't do anything about it" are all said at the same time without a hint of self-awareness. In this case it's "The government shutting down is a good thing" and "The government shutting down is Obama's/the Democrats fault, so blame him for the horrible things like a closed WWII memorial" are said at the same time.

Congress is legally required to compensate people for the time they worked.  The people who wouldn't be getting back-pay in this scenario are the non-essential employees.

My ex is a tech writer at Goddard, and I'm pretty sure she's not considered "essential personnel." Saw her for the first time in over a decade at her mom's funeral on Monday.

Not sure what the point to this story is, but not only is she probably furloughed, she's also got the whole "and your mom is dead" thing going on.

I can't imagine they won't back pay all the "essential" people that are at work... that would be pretty much a "post your resume NOW" moment for anyone with transferrable job skills.  I can imagine the GOP especially giving the finger to those furloughed.  Maybe let them use vacation time for pay?

That one surprised me.  First, I always thought WIC was a state thing, guess it isn't.  Second, how in the hell does that not make the 'essential' cut when so many people depend on that for things like milk and healthy food for their children?
