(Calgary Sun)   While you were debating the government shutdown, what the Iranian charm offensive means, and why the Jets suck so much, this guy went out and saw the world had to offer. In Canadian badass fashion   (calgarysun.com) divider line 5

Slu: Isn't "Canadian Badass" an oxymoron?

Nope, just redundant.

Lotta trolling/"U Mad Bro?" posts up in here.  I say good on him.  I don't care of he came from money or not, the guy spent quality time with people in the most dangerous country in the world, silverback gorillas, pygmies, and Iraqi devil worshippers.  I don't care how much money you have, it still won't buy balls that brassy.

Lot of sour grapes here.

I'd love to be able to see a tenth of what he's seen in the past 23 years.  I hope he writes a book, it might give me some good travel ideas.

I'm trying to piece together the article here...

He's 44 and has been traveling full-time for 23 years. That means he started at 21. From the article... "Bown... who ran an export business in Indonesia before selling it to fund his adventure." So he owned an export business in Indonesia at 21, then sold it to travel for 23 years. So I'm guessing he comes from wealth and sold a family business that he inherited. Not to downplay his accomplishments, the extensive traveling thing is really cool, but anybody who comes from wealth can make this decision. If you never have money worries, anything is possible. His wealth could get him out of any traveling jam that presents itself.

I'm always curious about cases like this: where does the money come from? I mean I have this acquaintance who leaves Montreal as soon as the days get too short and spends six months in South America. He's never had a job AFAIK. I want to do this too. How?
