Yeah, don't get too excited, ja-bronies... the competition includes green plastic army men, Pac-Man, Nerf, the games of Chess and Clue, rubber duckies and bubbles.

From TFA:

Each year, the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York, recognizes toys that have "engaged and delighted multiple generations, inspiring them to learn, create, and discover through play."

I'd say the TMNT and MLP toy lines are a pretty long shot by comparison.

GI Joe isn't in there yet? How? How can the single most iconic boy's toy thing not be in there? Or at least Army Men, those are like, the most important toys for males ever. What is even in there if its not?

Pete: I wish I liked anything as much as my kids like bubbles.

Ben Stone: That's sad.

Pete: Totally sad. Their smiling faces just point out your inability to enjoy anything.

My mistake a visit to the website reveals they absolutely are in there. Maybe I misread the article in my haste?

TMNT has a good chance, I'd say. Star Wars and the Gameboy are in there. Although having a blanket on it makes it a bit stupid. I used to play with couch cushions to make forts, but that isn't really a toy.

GI Joe has been there since 2004.

You can see the full list here - http://www.toyhalloffame.org/toys

The Museum of Play is a really awesome place, I'm lucky enough to live nearby and can check out the new exhibits regularly.

I'm looking at you, so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

If we're talking about the user-voted competition, it got linked to by Equestria Daily which explains the flood of pony voters.

(I voted for nerf guns, because really, who can vote against a fully automatic belt-fed dart minigun?)

Haven't you heard? GI Joe assaulted Barbie during a bout of roid rage. Toy writers will never elect him, he'll have to wait for the Toy Veteran's Committee.

What the hell is Monopoly doing in the Hall of Fame?  Yes, every child in the Western world plays it... once, and never to completion.  It is not a beloved children's toy.  It is a tool for discovering which family member is the biggest asshole.  (Typically this will be the person who suggests playing Monopoly.)

Hey, a few Cardboard boxes and a bunch of sticks can give you some epic sword / gun battles as one team fights to take the other teams castle.

More like, skip, skip, draw 4, draw 2, draw 4, uno, skip

/had a rule where you could not place two draw 4s on top of each other unless its a multiplayer chain or you did not have the color card (meaning more then 2 players).

styckx: When the MLP fans wake up sometime after 12pm this threads is in full their full wrath!

Not in this case, actually. MLP was a successful toy line that had its own fandom (note the 2005-2008 dates) before the G4 reboot that spawned the Bronies, but as a line of action figures, it was no more or less revolutionary than TMNT or other toon-inspired action figures. Chess and the rubber ducky need to be there for historical reasons, Clue needs to be there for changing board games, Little Green Men need to be there as the first really popular minifigs, all the other names are also worthy, but of the 12 listed for this year's candidates, I'd cast my vote for Nerf. I was surprised it wasn't in the hall of fame already.

Nerf used new materials and managed to make projectile-based toys safer to the targets, sports toys that didn't require the hassle of inflation or maintenance, and did so in a way that made both types of toys more fun they were before. You could play baseball indoors on a rainy day, and when you got bored of that, just shoot each other from behind the couch. Knowing that there was no way to put someone's eye out gave you more, not fewer, opportunities for play. Those opportunities created a 40-year franchise that is even present in the modern office/cubicle farm. The other names made significant additions to already-existing genres, but Nerf changed the way we play. Yeah, it's Nerf or nothin'.
