FTFA: Scientists have found a potential cure for permanent deafness caused by loud noise exposure, infection and toxic drugs, using a drug that stimulates the inner ear.

Who needs a drug for that? My ladyfriend does that to me with her tongue.

I consider my moderate deafness a gift too. Only it's because i consider most of the words people say on a daily basis to be bullshiat.

/Would still probably get this treatment so i can ruin my hearing again.

Could also sub in Blue Oyster Cult or My Bloody Valentine.

The three most painfully loud concerts I've ever attended, bar none.

I didn't get anywhere close to the speakers and my ears hurt for close to two weeks following.

Still love the bands' music but I'd definitely forewarn anybody thinking of seeing them to invest in 'plugs.

No cure for artillary specialists in the 80's whose Commanders told them to man up?

Or people like me who had anti-antibiotic doctors in the late 80's, and let my ear infections completely fark my cochlea into uselessness?

Stray Cats in a tiny club. Killer show.  Ears rang for days.  I was 19. Stupid kid.

My dad was legally deaf by the time he was out of the Army in '88. From 83-89 all of my hometown doctors refused to put me on anything stronger than Benadryl because I'm allergic to all of the 'cillins. My hearing is bad enough that I got rejected waivers in 10/01...for cook positions, with a 96 on my ASVAB.

I could totally use this. I'm half deaf in my left ear due to years of clubbing.

As someone who has tinnitus and minor hearing loss from various loud noises, I find this great news.  I might be able to sleep without a fan or some other white noise in the room.  Wouldn't that be amazing.

I wish I could say my hearing loss came from doing something excessively fun, like years of clubbing and loud music, except I have attended very few concerts without wearing earplugs and never liked my music loud.  Mostly it came from random environmental stuff, ear infections, and being a drummer.  Yes, I wore ear protection while drumming.  You can do everything right and still lose parts of your hearing.

I wonder how effective this is on age-based hearing loss and delayed hearing loss.  My dad spent time in the Marines during Vietnam, and about 30 years later it started catching up with him.  Now his hearing is substantially impacted.

Bill_Wick's_Friend: /noticeably deaf due to years of loud rock-n-roll

I'd be as well (amongst other exposure to extended periods of  uncomfortable loudness*) but after the MBV show in the early 1990s I got hipped to wearing earplugs at shows. At first I was all "Earplugs! That's for old ladies and wimps!" But really, they cut the volume to what it should be.(for me, anyway).while still being able to make out what you're listening to and one can actually hear without having to have people repeat things 5 times to you in the days (and weeks) following. Just an ordinary buck-fitty pair.

Still remember sitting next to the speaker stack at a Melvins concert feeling my ears churn and burn as the band opened up with Night Goat. That bass riff man. I think my spine was vibrating for days. Without the 'plugs, That would have made me stone deaf forever.

*working in a stamping plant. (not as a stamper).

Rarely attend rock shows these days. Mostly alt.country and blues.

I'll be impressed when they find a cure for tinnitus, which is not the same kind of hearing impediment. I've been to maybe 5 rock concerts in my whole life and have done all I can to prevent hearing loss due to noise, but have tinnitus anyway. It appears to run in the family.  I have a sibling who got it earlier than me and he's been to precisely 0 rock concerts in his life.

Still, epic win. I don't care how people lose their hearing. Being young and liking loud music is not a character flaw. It's just something people do.

Wooo, tinnitus club! Mine's just mildly annoying, so I'm not sure I'd jump on a cure if it had any risks or side effects. I sleep like a baby with just barely audible noise in the room. I also have no clue when or why it started, but it's been like this for at least a decade.

One of the very few intelligent things I've ever done was to invest in proper ear protection.  5,000+ shows later, and my hearing is still excellent.  Other parts of me, not so much.

In a thread about hearing loss, I feel I need to plug my ACS Pro custom earplugs. Yes they're expensive, but you only have two ears, and they last 5+ years. I got mine a few years ago, when I could no longer rationalize going to concerts without earplugs. Normal foam plugs both hurt my ears, and give off a terrible muffled sound. With these, the volume is just lowered - not distorted.

You're lucky. I have it; it's irritating, it's incessant, and it's associated with enough hearing loss that I'm stuck in vocational rehabilitation, too old to hire and too young to retire.

At least that's one thing a lot of companies are doing now, offering hearing protection.  I worked for years in a noisy factory with none.  In fact, they will write you up now if they catch you without it, even walking into work.
