There are still Radio Shacks that aren't literal shacks with radios in them in the Antarctic?

This was after the employee greeted him with "So you want a new cell phone today?"

Funny, isn't it? Not that many years ago, you could walk in to a Radio Shack and buy all the components you need to build a tunable radio.

I used to work for Radio Shack. So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies. Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about. But trust me.... You don't.

a_bilge_monkey: resistors, transistors, soldering supplies and stuff

I've bought that stuff when I couldn't wait for the slow boat from chinese ebay sellers. It's too bad they haven't updated their catalog since the 80s, because they still sell 5% tolerance resistors and archaic TTL ICs.

They have no clue what they sell.

Went in a while ago looking to buy an Arduino after they had been on the market a while. Looked in the electronics section and couldn't find it. So I asked the employee and he said "ard-a-what". I tried to explain that it would just be a small circuit board with a couple of chips but he had no clue. He called the other employee from the back and they searched through the IC bins but were not really sure what they were looking for.

So I'm on my way out and I spot an entire Arduino display in the corner crammed in by the aisles of cell phones - couple of different types of Arduinos, an Ethernet shield that I needed, a couple of other shields, an Arduino how-to guide, 9V Arduino wall chargers, breadboards to help you with your Arduino, Arduino suitable project boxes, Arduino jumper kits, and even some LED's and resistors thrown in. It's a freaking Arduino smorgasboard put together by some Arduino fanatic.

I point it out to them and one goes "oh yeah, we got that stuff a while back, but no one's every bought anything from there before".

I dread going in to Radio Shack because they always seem to hire extroverted Aspies. They follow you around and make extremely creepy attempts at conversation, which leave me feeling awkward and violated.

If you work for any corporate retail establishment these days, you are required (while being secretly watched/monitored) to recite these canned sales pitches to the customer, each time, every time. I assure you, the employee doesn't want to spout off some drivel about a promotion any more than you don't want to hear it.

I don't agree with hitting the guy, but I can't say I blame him either.

Maybe if you're a customer, just smile and say no thanks, then ask for what you'd like? Most of these individuals are making less than 10 bucks an hour, they don't need your smart ass comments making their lives shiattier.

Yeah, same here.  I've got a nerd streak in me, so occasionally I need to buy something electronic in nature.  And when I'm trying to figure out where to buy it local instead of the internet, Radioshack eventually comes to mind.  It's at that point I usually say "Blech" aloud to the thought of going there.

Just walk up to the HDMI cables, grab one, and say "do you know what this costs at Amazon"?

They will flee.

That's what Fry's is for. You'll roam the aisles forever looking for a tech if you actually want one; but if you know what you need, you can go there, find it and buy it, and exit without ever actually speaking to another human being.

Except in the computer section. There you have to beat the sales associates off with a 2x4 because I believe they survive on a 1% commission and scraps of food left by the customers.

I've made the mistake of going into frikkin radio shack TWICE in the last year or so. Once for some sort of special cable... now I can't remember what... where they charged $30 for something I could have ordered online for <$5. Next was a couple special batteries, one 6v and one 12v, and they charged $8 each. Next time, I ordered them for $1 ea. from Amazon. Next time I think I need something RIGHT FRIKKIN NOW from radio shack, I really really don't. It can wait 2 days for Amazon to get it here.

Instead of punching, the correct response is to deny payment for being 41 cents short.  Then mock the customer for being broke.

/don't let plastic payment be an obstacle in the plan.

Let's be honest here.

I worked for the shack for about 5 years. For a kid who didn't go to college it could be decent money if you made it to the right store. 90% of the stores are the wrong store, that's where all the dumbasses are.

If it's anything like it used to be I can understand why the kid cracked. We were supposed to ((and if you made it to "the show" or a million dollar (per year, this is 1999 dollars) store "supposed to" means "required to") pitch every single customer the following:

A Cell Phone
A Sprint PCS (they pretended like they were different than cell phones back then, the biggest difference was a coverage area you could cover in 30 minutes on foot).
ADT Security system
DSS (precursor to direcTV)
An extended warranty on just about anything we sold them.
On top of that we had to get names and addresses from every goddamn customer, and I have seen a guy thrown into a fit of RAGE by being asked for a name and address when he was buying a watch battery.
Also, would you like to switch to sprint long distance?
You know I could save you 10% if you are approved for a radio shack credit card

We were graded on ALL of those metrics. For the credit card we were graded by percentage of monthly sales AND number of new applications by ticket written. Not to mention graded on gross sales.

It was my job and I did it, made pretty OK money (25k in 1999. In Spokane, WA that wasn't bad for a kid with no career) but here is the deal:

I know I am going to piss you off by trying to sell you all this shiat, but you have been here before. You know this is going to happen. I don't want to do it, you don't want it done but like having sex with Kobe Bryant it is going to happen regardless of your wanting it or not. So just tell me no 17 times, pay cash for the goddamn replacement AC adapter for your cordless phone (by the way, it isn't my goddamn fault YOU thought they were all the same so you didn't bring your phone so you had to go back home to get it, you should be mad at you for being ignorant!) refuse to give me your FARKING name and get the hell out! Get lippy and.... well I can see how this could happen.

Fun Fact: In sales training we were told "It's all about the add on sales. If you sell a computer you keep putting accessories on the table till they say 'no'. They don't know what they need, you are looking out for them. They need everything."
