TFA: "Manning apparently also accompanied the boy to get his nipples pierced and put his own signature on a parental consent form."

So not so much the nipple piercing as the parental impersonation.

Can someone 'splain how how the RCC is kinder/gentler nowadays with the new pope?

The Archdiocese of St. Louis encourages all persons with reports of misconduct with a minor involving a member of the clergy or other church personnel to contact Deacon Phil Hengen

I'd definitely encourage them to contact the police or any other body not affiliated with the church. That self-policing ship sailed long ago.

Honest question, not trailing, how can you in good concense continue to be a part of that organization? It's not the abuse per se, every group has a few bad apples, but the institutional cover up.

People still go, and give them money.
That's called approval.

They don't care what you think, or what anyone thinks, as long as people continue to give them money.

Inflatable Rhetoric: They don't care what you think, or what anyone thinks, as long as people continue to give them money.

I haven't been donating since this all blew up years ago.  I realize change only happens when money is involved. When I was a kid we were promised all the issues were cleaned up.  I will go on record saying the policies in place are dramatically better than most of you non-Catholics know.  The reporting of problems is very serious now.

ReverendJimBobHammer: Honest question, not trailing, how can you in good concense continue to be a part of that organization? It's not the abuse per se, every group has a few bad apples, but the institutional cover up.

Because I've never been so adherent to dogma and individual hero-worship that I thought the people who run the organization really deserve blind allegiance.  I've always held authority figures in proper context--teachers, cops, parents, politicians, clergy, sports celebrities, actors, etc., are all people with agendas doing what they think is right (or at least right for them at that particular moment).  When I went through Confirmation I accepted this about myself: I like the purest tenents of Catholicism, which are basically the same for every other religion, and every religion is administered by humans with flaws who make up a bunch of silly rites, rituals, and parables to teach their followers.  Since I grew up Catholic, I really didn't feel like learning new rites, since I consider all of them regional traditions, rather than pronouncements from God that you really will burn in Hell for eating fish on Friday or for Jews and Muslims, eating pork.

Every religion is theater.  Every religion has issues. Why change locations just because some of the movie sucks?
