The cyclists that decide to use the highway instead of the bike path are the ones that really piss me off.  I hope you don't do that.

I'd take motorist more seriously about following the rules but they rarely follow the rules either.  They don't stop at stop signs and they drive over the speed limit.  Hell, they even get pissed at me when I drive the speed limit in the left lane on the expressway.  Most motorists are hypocritical asshats.

Maybe by Somalian standards.

theorellior: Uranus Is Huge!: Well, if you're blowing through stop signs and ignoring laws because your feet are stuck to the pedals, you'd better be.

Say, you wouldn't have heard of any drivers in this thread expressing their desire to kill cyclists or anything, have you? That might have something to do with it.

Really? You ignore traffic laws because of comments on Fark?

Besides, who said kill? Compound fractures are a great teacher.

The law says I have the right to the road. And, at least the law around here is that you have to be 3 feet from a cyclist when you pass. If you don't like the law, you're welcome to walk or take the bus.

While threatening someone with death (i.e. passing too close to them with your car) is unacceptable, impeding traffic is against the law.

If for some reason your vehicle can't go fast enough to keep up with traffic, you are expected to pull over and let traffic pass instead of letting a long line of cars build up behind you. Failing to do so is a moving violation.

Yeah, I use my left hand because it's the convention, but I always wonder while I'm doing it if I would be better off signaling with my right.

If I'm stopping, I'm using my left arm so I can slow to a stop with my rear brake. I also point to the right with my hand so I don't look like I'm waving.

If I'm not stopping (because it's legal to turn without stopping) I'll use my right arm.

I may speed but I never impede traffic.  I'm always aware of my surroundings and go with the flow of traffic.  The laws I break don't affect any other drivers and that's the big difference. Do you understand?

I hate signalling right turns.  It looks like I'm waving.

That is exactly what happened to me.  I was approaching an intersection and a cop was waiting on the other side so I though, "hmmm, I better signal my right turn else the cop will be a dick and give me a ticket".  I Put my left hand up at a right angle to signal the turn and the cop waved back.  After that I figured if it was possible for a cop not to recognize the hand signal for a right turn then it was pretty likely that a normal motorist wouldn't either.  After that, the one time a week when I would signal a right turn, I just stuck my right arm out.

Heh-- This happened to a friend of mine.
How many drivers knbow what that signal means, anyway-- I just point.
me...that way... OK?

I actually had my taillights out for a while, so I did the hand signals, just as specified in drivers' ed.

I got a LOT of weird looks.

(I assume the right turn signal originated as the left arm out the window, pointing to the right over the roof.)

I rode a bike home from work daily for about 6 months, a 13 mile trip. I observed the rules, road on the shoulder when I could and did my best to avoid becoming road pizza. But... After being cursed at, hit between the shoulder blades with a half full can of Budweiser and several pairs of soiled shorts... I decided Physics wins in the end and bought the first car I could afford. Sure, bicycles have the same rights blah blah blah, but those rights do you no good when you're dead.

Most of you farktards that think they own the road just don't have the patience to be delayed 5 to 10 seconds on your journey. If there is no shoulder, even if there is a shoulder, cyclists are entitled to be in the travel lane. That's a fact. Just slow down for a second and go around. It's not difficult. If you see red every time you see someone on a bike and lump us all into the douchebag category, go fark yourself with a freaking porcupine.

Adjust your brake so that it won't lock up or at least won't unless you are torquing on it, most of your stopping power is in the front.

You want to be stopping with your front tire (primarily) since about 75% of your braking power is in the front wheel (weight transfer... it even matters on a 20 pound bike).  Getting in the habit of using the mostly the back is a quick way to skid through an intersection because you couldn't stop in time.

Bah. I don't care nearly as much as I let on (anymore). My biggest complaint these days is the volume of cyclists that prefer the roads without bike lanes despite this being one of the most bicycle friendly areas of the country. Jagoffs doing 25 in a 55 on a road with tiny/nonexistent shoulders...
