Damn. I really liked Executive Orders.

He was only 66? F*ck!

2013-10-02 10:56:56 AM
his wiki page says "This article is about a person who has been presumed dead."  Never saw that before.

RIP writing man

I'll bet he would have liked to see Montana.

I haven't read anything by him recently (i.e. for about 20 years), but his early works (Red October, Red Storm Rising) were books I chewed through pretty quickly.  Yes, he had some weaknesses in his writing, but I think he improved with some good work with his editors.

I'd say he had a pretty good run, though.

LOL subby.

And yes. It's a shame. I enjoyed his early works from the 80's and 90's. He kind of disappeared the past couple of years though. Splinter Cell production or something wasn't it?

2013-10-02 10:57:49 AM
WTF really?

Sad.

RIP

2013-10-02 10:57:52 AM
Sigh.  This really bums me out.  Hunt for Red October was a significant influence on me, and a good portion of why I ended up on a submarine for 5 years.

RIP Tom. Thanks for the good reading...

Newsflash?
I guess it might be news that an author beloved by many has passed but it's not newsflash-worthy imo, I'd reserve that for unfolding events that may have severe implications for individual or collective safety.
But we now live in a world where the cult of celebrity outshines common-sense.

2013-10-02 10:58:29 AM
So, another supporter of right wing causes and the NRA is dead. A good writer, but a very terrible person.

2013-10-02 10:58:41 AM
Great. Now we're down to Dick Marcinko for unrealistic international intrigue ideas that Homeland Security can use to justify more erosion of our rights in this country.

At the funeral they will play one ping and one ping only.

Sorry to see him go. Didn't like his later stuff as much, but Red October and Red Storm Rising were great. Cool that writing was a second career for him.

also  Dead Storm Rising

/reminds me to read Red Storm Rising again

He pretty much died inside once the Berlin Wall fell I bet. The lack of a single faced enemy was tough.

Though Debt of Honor and Executive Orders were nifty.

2013-10-02 11:00:44 AM
Actually he just penciled in his name at the top of someone else's death certificate.

TV's Vinnie: He was only 66? F*ck!

Well, it looks like he was a cigarette junkie, which explains all the smoking that goes on in his books.

So yeah.

Aw, that's sad. He was a good writer. I really enjoyed a lot of his novels. Thanks for the exciting stories, Tom. You will be missed.

I thought I would be in the group of the biggest assholese in the thread, bringing in the RIP Meme and all. But you just had to show up and out-asshole me, didn't you?

At that age, probably a heart attack.

Sad, just sad. I knew buying an iMac and switching from Windows to Mac would kill someone I liked

Government funding kept Clancy powered up producing. Once the shutdown happened and funding stopped, they had to power down and shelve Clancy.

2013-10-02 11:02:08 AM
I guess he didn't like Blacklist either.

2013-10-02 11:02:13 AM
I always enjoyed Without Remorse. His new stuff went a little too much to the neo-con direction, but some of that could have been due to the ghostwriters.

2013-10-02 11:02:17 AM

physt: 66... Jesus H... that's not that old.

He was an enthusiastic chainsmoker. Amazed his lungs held out for that long really.

Yeah, but his wish fulfillment military fan-fiction was ghost written pretty well.
