How long after they trademark something are they required to bring said trademarked product to market?

That would be the most awesomest thing ever.

Ok. I'm a little bit excited for this.
Trying to get into the drawing for a steambox but I don't have enough friends. Story of my life.

Purposeful leak or masterful troll?

In any event, I want to believe.  I want to believe so bad....

Steambox launch title?  Limited edition headcrab controller?  Can I use the portal gun to set up a trap zone and then use the gravity gun to shoot saw blades through portals and decapitate the passing zombies?   Will Alyx ever have a shower?  These are the things I need to know.

That would be amazing. And interesting. Two characters with completely different styles of play having to work together. It'd be difficult to balance the gameplay I think.

I prefer to take the approach of "HL3 does not exist until it has been installed on my computer"

GavinTheAlmighty: How long after they trademark something are they required to bring said trademarked product to market?

As far as I'm aware, there's no legal requirement to bring something to market once it has been trademarked, but there is a window (usually about 5 years) within which the trademark must be used or else it could be considered to be abandoned.

Of course that means they could slap that trademark on anything and it would be technically in use. Even something as trollish as shirts or bumper stickers saying "Half-Life 3 - When it's Done" would qualify.

Well, prepare yourself to get trolled, because that's exactly what's happening.

HL3 is Valve's biggest ace and they're saving it for use when they need it: When they release a brand new console that needs a killer app to generate sales and adoption.

EVERYBODY wants to play HL3, so many people will get a SteamBox. It's the Zelda/Mario to Valve's Nintendo.

I don`t think Valve does exclusives. Of course this could be a first, but given their history I`d be surprised.

umm.. no, anyone who has played a fps evar has been having wet dreams about what HL3 might be like.

Anyone who can honestly deny this has only played one FPS, decided that FPS games just didn't suit them, and went back to playing Bejewelled clones.

Hell, I've only ever played Portal 2, and I'm foaming at the gash right now at this news.

'Fanatics' own loads of iShyte, or have restraining orders from Beiber. - this is REAL.

I'm more looking forward to the things that will come out of the engine:  L4D3, Portal 3, and possibly a very broad mod community.

I highly, highly doubt it wouldn't be available through Steam for PC.

Since the 'console' is just a PC running a free, open source OS and other hardware manufacturers will be making similar devices I find it extremely unlikely that they could restrict it to just that device even if they wanted to.

RedPhoenix122: Portal 3

I have needed Portal 3 since I completed Portal 2. Which I had needed since i beat portal. Before that, I had tried crack a few times, which was kinda cool at the time. I guess...

I'm saving for the OR headset.... which I know I need.

This was one of the funniest phrases meaning 'desperate' I learned during my time in Glasgow. To be more authentic I'd have added the word 'pure' before foaming, and added, 'by the way' at the end.

This. The Half Life series is just your standard FPS with a halfassed sci-fi veneer thrown on. The puzzles are ok and all and are about the only good parts of the games.

I love the Portal series though. Straight puzzle solving all the while a crazed AI taunts you with various insults.

Portal could not have existed without the technology and methods developed by valve for the sole purpose of creating the half life games.

The most important aspect would be Valves play testing and level refinement methods.  Without their expertise in leading a player through a specific path without it seeming to be heavy handed is what allows them to have seemingly complex puzzles in Portal easy and yet still be rewarding to the player.  Valve is controlling you for every second that you are playing their games and most of the time you don't notice.

Much like Duke Nukem Forever, it has been so long since the franchise has picked back up that I simply no longer give a shiat. I mean, it was obvious Valve stopped giving a shiat years ago.

Normally I'd agree with you but they've produced some great games since then. And considering that the Portal games are actually set in the HL universe I don't think they've stopped caring.

Dingleberry Dickwad: The Half Life series is just your standard FPS with a halfassed sci-fi veneer thrown on.

The Half-Life series is not "just your standard FPS".  The Half-Life life series set the standard for all future FPS games.  Valve is pretty much single-handedly responsible for modern narrative design in first-person shooters.

RoxtarRyan: Much like Duke Nukem Forever, it has been so long since the franchise has picked back up that I simply no longer give a shiat. I mean, it was obvious Valve stopped giving a shiat years ago.

Man, people have such short memories.  For reference, it's been six years since HL2Ep2

By comparison:

Ocarina of Time was seven years after Link to the Past.
Metroid Prime was eight years after Super Metroid
Max Payne 3 was nine years after Max Payne 2
X-Com: Enemy Unknown was eleven years after X-Com: Enforcer

A long time between sequels does not, and never has meant that the next game will be bad.  Duke Nukem Forever wasn't bad it took a long time to release.

2013-10-02 02:17:54 PM

GavinTheAlmighty: Duke Nukem Forever wasn't bad BECAUSE it took a long time to release.
