It took me about fifteen minutes to get passed the disappointment. This team has underperformed all season, why start trying in the playoffs? The losses in 2010 and 2013 were way more of a gut punch.

Good for the Pirates though, I have no hate for the fans. I'll take them over the Cardinals any day.

Give credit where it's due.  Dusty managed as well as he ever does.

Congrats, Pittsburgh fans!  Now beat the f*cking Cardinals!

/I was rooting for you, maybe this will get Castellini to dump Dusty's miserable ass.

The Reds were in the "playoffs" like the 65th team is in the NCAA basketball "tournament". Just give them a participation ribbon and send them home.

I've tried not to get my hopes up. Every year for the last 20 years the Pirates have collapsed like a fat man on a treadmill. I'm just glad that the ballpark gets to be used in October for the first time ever.

They need to switch it up to a Division Winner + 5 Wild Card format with four rounds of best of sevens -- like real sports do. Well, like hockey does.

Or you could do a best of five, total runs affair. Rainouts would just shorten the time to play -- like cricket. But unlike cricket, no draws.

As much as I would love more baseball (and I firmly believe the LDSs should be best of 7s, not 5s), no.. just no. The current format is just fine.

The problem with the previous format was that there was no real incentive to win the division if you already qualified for the wild card. This rather neatly fixes that.

For those curious, under the previous rules, the Braves would be hosting the Pirates, the Cards would host the Dodgers, the Red Sox would host the Tribe, the A's would host the Tigers, and the Reds, Rays and Rangers would all be playing golf; there wouldn't have been a 163 between the Rays and Rangers.

Ah, the Reds put up a decent showing against the Pirates this season. I was sure that after the game on the 20th, the Pirates were going to collapse in the 9th again.

The weird thing now is that, unlike the other teams in town, there are no real rivals to talk smack on.

Well, that second one isn't a bad idea.  But how about not starting the guy who has pitched all of 12 innings since June?  Dusty shows the same love for Cueto that he did for Volquez, putting him in to high leverage situations.  Latos or Bailey seemed like the better choices to anybody not sucking on a toothpick.

Gratz to the Bucs. It's gonna be a good series, and it's cool to see a team break out of such a long slump.

Hopefully it'll take the sting out of watching the Cards win the series. Again.

I think the Bengals are still in that "false hope" phase, where they think they could make the postseason and scrap together some wins, but something horrible will happen, a gaping hole in the offense/defense that nobody saw all season long will be exposed in the first playoff game, and when the star players' contracts are up, Mike Brown will ship them off, tank a season or four, and hope the hype in  several draft picks will keep people going to games. I've seen the Bengals vicious cycle firsthand, and I won't support that team until somebody outside of the Brown family runs it.

/Dear Mark Cuban: Have you ever been to Cincinnati?

Preseason results suggest that the Blue Jackets won't suck this year. I hope they tear it up in the East.

I also hope the Pirates make it at least one round, good for them for having a winning season finally.

Inasmuch as the Reds allowed more runs to be scored than they themselves scored, then yes. They "lost" it more than the Pirates won it. Meanwhile, in reality, the Pirates had 13 hits, put a crapton of men on base who they then capitalized upon, held the heart of an incredibly dangerous lineup to barely anything (including Votto, who was 0-4). Pulling Cueto earlier might have helped, I guess, except that Marshall and Ondrusek gave up runs, as well, and the Reds didn't score enough to win even without Cueto's mistakes.

Not really sure what else the Bucs could've done to have "officially" won it. It seemed pretty clear that they were the better of the two teams; especially since they spent the whole series leading up to this game sweeping the Reds.

I came here to say that if you're not rooting for PGH, unless your team is also in the playoffs (and that doesn't excuse fans of an AL team until the WS) you have no baseball soul.

After 21 years, that wagon looks mighty inviting.

As a Pirates fan, I'm ashamed that happened.  There's no excuse for that kind of behavior.  And it has to be true - I mean, why would she make up that story?  Ugh.

A good manager is one who leads their team to the playoffs. Dusty Baker is better than managers such as Ozzie Guillen, Robert Ventura, Don Mattingly, etc.

I would actually like to see Dusty Baker remain as manager for life for the Reds until the day he dies.

Looks like a lot of afternoon games for the Pirates-Cards so they can pimp LA-Atl in prime time.

I'm thinking most casual fans and/or fans of teams that are out of it would rather see the Pirates and A's games.

Well we better start having those end of the world fark parties now.

2013-10-02 12:56:40 PM
According to ESPN:

"Sgt. John Fisher says police broke up an argument involving Dallas Latos and other Cincinnati and Pirates fans at a bar inside PNC Park during the Pirates' 6-2 win Tuesday night.
Fisher says Latos can file a private criminal complaint, which must be vetted by a county prosecutor, but that police consider the incident closed.
Fisher says five Pirates' fans and two women in Latos' group were ejected, but that no arrests were made.
Fisher says all involved were drinking and that Latos' group had left an area reserved for players' wives before the argument began."

So apparently, she was part of a group of players' wives that had been drinking, left the reserved area and got into a fight with a group of fans.  So I think there's a bit more to the story than Latos' wife was tweeting.

I would say to Pirates fans "Be classy, act like you've been there before", but well... that would be a heck of an acting job that would put Hollywood out of business.

Either way, good job Bucs!  'Sox fan rooting for ya here.
